Asuka & Jonathan Eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance

Host Cat Deeley Flanked by Asuka Kondoh & Jonathan Platero
Finalists Asuka Kondoh and Jonathan Platero were eliminated tonight from the competition. Kondoh, 25, is a Latin Ballroom dancer from Irvine, CA, and Platero, 21, is a Salsa dancer from New York, NY. This week featured special performances by Rock duo The Veronicas and Hip Hop dance team The Rage Boyz Crew.
The three couples who received the fewest votes after Wednesday’s performance show were: Asuka Kondoh and Vitolio Jeune; Karla Garcia and Jonathan Platero; and Caitlin Kinney and Jason Glover. After each of these six dancers performed solo routines, the judges eliminated Kondoh and Platero.
Next week, the competition continues on television’s most original dance show when the remaining 14 finalists (Kūpono Aweau, Brandon Bryant, Phillip Chbeeb, Randi Evans, Karla Garcia, Jason Glover, Vitolio Jeune, Evan Kasprzak, Caitlin Kinney, Janette Manrara, Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi, Kayla Radomski and Melissa Sandvig) compete as couples once again on a two-hour performance show Wednesday, July 1 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
The following night, pop sensation Kelly Clarkson will sing her new hit, “I Do Not Hook Up,” and professional dancers Desmond Richardson and Patricia Hachey will perform a Pas de Deux before the judges send two more dancers home on the live results show Thursday, July 2 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed).

Max and Ashley’s DANCE Journey, So You Think You Can Dance.

Ashley & Max with Cat Deeley
Max (Maksim) Kapitanikkov was eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance during the Top 18 week, which was surprising to many viewers. Just the week before, Max was on the Hot Tamale Train, and this week he performed a pop jazz routine that the judges liked. On a press call the morning after Max’s elimination, he said that he wasn’t too surprised about the elimination. He also doesn’t have any regrets, stating, “Looking back, I think I did the best that I could.” Max is at peace with the results and said he predicted it because he thinks Jason and Kupono are great dancers.
On Wednesday’s show, Max’s partner, Kayla, revealed that Max is the “house dad” who cooks for his roommates. Max isn’t worried that someone will assume the role as house dad in his absence.
Max always remained composed while on stage. He says he stays in a focused zone while he’s up there. Max’s trick is to “visualize the routine before you’re going to do it, and just go for it.”
Growing up in Moscow until age 13, Max used to go with his mom to the dance school where she used to teach. This early exposure gave him a great background in dance.
It’s often tricky for ballroom dancers to perform solos on So You Think You Can Dance, but Max said he doesn’t think he was at a disadvantage. Knowing he only had 30 seconds to dance for his life, Max chose to perform a jive routine because it is a style of dance that shows off a lot of aspects of dance and performance.
Max is thankful for his So You Think You Can Dance experience. He said he learned so much and hopes to not only take all of that with him, but build on it too.
Ashley Valerio made it on to the show after trying out four times. The judges saw her persistence and noticed an improvement in Ashley over the years. Just a few years ago, Ashley moved to the Hollywood area from Arizona to pursue her dance dreams. She has spent that time auditioning for SYTYCD and teaching dance.
Although Ashley was eliminated after two weeks on the show, she is in good spirits and said, “I think the show will open many doors, and I’m really excited about that.” During her last week on the show, Ashley performed a Shane Sparks’ hip hop routine with her partner, Kupono. After watching the dance on TV, Ashley believes that she and Kupono performed the best they could and she has no regrets about the performance. In addition, Ashley’s solo to fight for her spot in the competition was more of a performance that showed off her personality than her dance moves. Ashley stands by her solo choreography and said, “I just really wanted to be me, and that’s what I do and I loved it. It was fun.”
Now that Ashley and Max have been eliminated, their partners, Kupono and Kayla, are a couple. Ashley said she thinks “Kayla and Kupono are going to be phenomenal together.” She said that Kupono is a great person and partner, and that she thinks he’ll bring out the best in Kayla.
Ashley mentioned that she’ll come out of this experience as a better dancer, but after these past few weeks, it’s the friendships she knows she’ll take away. She also got to accomplish some dreams while on the show by working with choreographers she has always admired. “Right now I feel like I’m on top of the world because I got to work with two of my favorite choreographers in the world, Wade Robson and Mia Michaels, and they both pushed me past my limits and I feel like a stronger person and a stronger dancer, and I’m excited to take on more things.”
The years of auditioning for Dance have paid off for Ashley. “This is what I’ve been working for…I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Here’s a video recap of their elimination week:

Paris and Tony Talk About Their DANCE Experience

- Tony Bellissimo, Host Cat Deeley & Paris Torres (left to right).
The day after Paris and Tony were sent home from Season 5, they opened up about their experience on So You Think You Can Dance during a press call.
Paris Torres auditioned last year, and said that the difference between last year’s Vegas week and this year’s Vegas week was big. She said the talent was amazing and everyone at Vegas week could have been finalists on past seasons.
On Wednesday’s show, Paris performed a hard-hitting hip hop routine with her partner, Tony. The routine was jam-packed with all types of hip hop. She said the dance was “hectic and hard and stressful for the first week,” but at rehearsal they were nailing the routine, and choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon were pleased with their progress. Paris said that she and Tony left rehearsals confident, but continued to practice often, so she believes that they ended up over-practicing and the dance may have become just a series of steps. In addition, Paris and Tony performed in tight, elaborate costumes while wearing headphones that constricted their movement. They learned to work with what they got and they tried their best.
After watching Paris and Tony dance to “Let The Beat Rock (Remix),” the judges said the dance was good but not great, so Paris and Tony worked hard on their solos just in case they fell in the bottom 3. Paris choreographed three dances to five of the songs on her list, but the song that got cleared was one she hadn’t prepared for, so she did her best at the spur of the moment.
Paris says she completely understands the decision the judges made. There are many girl contemporary dancers this season, and she understands the show works best with a variety of styles. Nigel’s comment about this actually made her more at ease with the judges’ decision.
Most of all, Paris said she “wanted to grow as a dancer” in the competition, and would have wanted to work with all of the choreographers, including Mandy Moore, who was one of her idols growing up.
The most memorable moment for Paris was when she found out she made the Top 20. Her second most memorable moment was taking the stage for her first performance and hearing the audience yell for her, “it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before,” Paris said.
Lastly, Paris would like to thank all of her fans who voted for her. “It means the world to me.”
Tony Bellissimo does not feel failed by the routine he performed during this week’s performance show. He loves Tabitha and Napoleon and said they created a great routine, and it was up to Tony and Paris to execute it properly.
During Vegas week, we saw Tony’s solo audition, which included several pictures of Nigel’s face. He likes to dance comedic routines and said the one in Vegas was “to let Nigel know that I know he’s watching me.” Like Paris, Tony auditioned last season too. He said that Vegas week was more emotional for him this season, but it was worth it because he had a very spiritual dance experience.
The judges put Tony in the Top 20 and said they wanted to see him grow as a dancer, but Tony thinks, given a dance in his own style the first week, he wasn’t able to show growth.
Tony is, and always has been, hyperactive and a daydreamer. As a result, his parents enrolled him in a variety of activities including sports, dance, and theater. He said that his sports teammates didn’t make fun of him for dancing because Tony would reason, “Why tackle guys all day when you could pick up girls?” He even invited his best friend to tag along to hip hop class, and his friend instantly understood why Tony gets so much joy out of dance.
The most memorable moment of Season 5 for Tony has been hearing Cat call his name during the performance night intros. Tony is leaving the show in good spirits and says he’s thankful for the opportunity he had on the show, and he hopes to reenter the dancing world as a better trained dancer. “I will always be a Top 20 Season 5 contestant, and no one can take that away from me. No one.”

Top 18 to Perform Again Wed Jun 17 8/7c
Paris Torres & Tony Bellissimo made it to the Top 20, but did not make the cut to the Top 18. On June 11, they were sent home.
The three couples who received the fewest votes after Wednesday’s performance show were: Paris Torres and Tony Bellissimo; Asuka Kondoh and Vitolio Jeune; and Karla Garcia and Jonathan Platero. After each of the six dancers performed a solo routine, the judges eliminated Paris Torres and Tony Bellissimo from the competition. Torres, 19, is a Contemporary dancer from Issaquah, WA, and Bellissimo, 20, is a Hip Hop dancer from Buffalo, NY.
Next week, the competition continues on television’s most original dance show when the remaining 18 finalists (Kūpono Aweau, Brandon Bryant, Phillip Chbeeb, Randi Evans, Karla Garcia, Jason Glover, Vitolio Jeune, Max Kapitannikov, Evan Kasprzak, Caitlin Kinney, Asuka Kondoh, Janette Manrara, Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi Jonathan Platero, Kayla Radomski, Melissa Sandvig and Ashley Valerio) compete as couples once again on a two-hour performance show Wednesday, June 17 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

The Top 20 are paired into 10 couples who will each work with a world-renowned choreographer to compose a dance routine representing their assigned genre. After each Wednesday performance show, the phone lines will open and the fate of these 20 finalists – one of whom will be the named America’s Favorite Dancer – will be left up to the voting fans.
On the live results shows beginning Thursday, June 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live PT/tape-delayed), the three couples with the lowest number of votes will be announced. Each week the six contestants comprising the bottom three couples are given a chance to perform solo routines in the hopes of convincing the judges to keep them in the competition. Recap: So You Think You Can Dance, Season 5, Episode 3
Auditions Los Angeles & Seattle
First Aired: 5/28/09
Recap by Lauren B.The third episode of the season brought Cat and crew to Los Angeles to search for stars. Los Angeles is also the home of the So You Think You Can Dance tapings and where the finalists reside while they’re still in the running to become America’s Favorite Dancer.
Joining Nigel and Mary in L.A. is Adam Shankman, who directed the movies Hairspray, Bedtime Stories, and 17 Again. Adam has been a choreographer and judge for the past two seasons of Dance, and his enthusiasm is inescapable. Some familiar Dance faces are in the audience, including Comfort, Josh, and Katee from Season 4.
Bianca Revels is the first contestant to audition. She tried out last year, and you may remember her as the amazing tap dancer who was just shy of making the top 20. Not one to quit, she’s back for another try, and this time she has brought her biggest supporter- her mom. Nigel said “cue the music,” but Bianca replied, “no music,” and let her tap shoes provide the music. There are a handful of talented tappers auditioning this year. Perhaps we’ll have our first tapper make the top 20. Mary even got out of her seat to applaud for Bianca, who has been tapping for 17 years. Mary thinks Bianca is the “best female tap dancer we’ve had on the show.” See you in Vegas, Bianca!
Brynelle Blanton and Xavier Blanton are siblings, but they said that people often mistake them for being a couple because they hold hands and don’t shy away from public displays of affection. Brynelle and Xavier performed a couples’ contemporary routine with lots of passion, but it was a little sloppy. The judges mention that their technique isn’t quite there, so the Blanton siblings are headed home, hand in hand.
Debra Lawson is a contemporary dancer who confused the judges by running around the stage and looking up and down. After her performance, Debra stood in front of the judges and said she’s concerned with the Dance schedule because she’s an Orthodox Jew whose religion may conflict with the obligations of being a contestant. Adam said, “When I’m dancing, that is when I feel closest to God. This may not be your profession, but if it’s your passion, keep with it.” Debra can take that advice with her as she heads home.
Suzanne Fernandez performs a whimsical routine, and when the judges ask what style of dance that was, she said it was a “Fairy Medicine Dance.” Next, John Fleming dances with a painted face. Then, Michael Han performs an interpretive, sassy, on point dance to Rihanna’s “Umbrella.”
Calico Sequeira is 30 years old, so this is her last chance to make the show before she’s “too old.” She loves swing dance and said that she even knows a 95 year old who swing dances, so 30 is hardly ancient. Calico danced with a partner and has a lot of energy, but doesn’t quite have the level of technique needed to advance in the competition. Nigel said that watching Calico is enjoyable, and dancing with her on a social level would be nice, but she’s not at the professional level with her dance. The other judges agreed, and Adam said he’d love to dance with her, and Calico invited him up. Adam takes her up on the offer. Adam Shankman, listed as “21ish” years old, danced some ballroom steps with Calico until the music switched into swing. When the performance ended, Adam received a standing ovation from Nigel and Mary, who invited him to the microphone. They also invited the Dance alumni in the audience to the judges’ table. Lauren Gottlieb, Katee Shean, Josh Allen, and Comfort Fedoke are the new panel of judges that Adam must face. After giving Adam their critiques, the four dancers send him to Vegas, and he freaks out.
Asuka Kondoh and Ricky Sun are International Latin Ballroom dancers. They mention that Asians typically don’t dance this style, and it is usually danced by Latin Americans or Russians. Asuka and Ricky auditioned last year, and Asuka even made it to the final round before the Top 20 was formed. Nigel was impressed that Ricky could hold his own next to the beautiful Asuka, and he could tell that Ricky has improved. Mary gave the dancers her professional stamp of approval, and both Asuka and Ricky are going to Vegas.
Several other dancers found success at the end of day one in Los Angeles, including a “naughty ballerina.”
Nathan Trasoras quit dancing in 8th grade because people made fun of him. With some encouragement from his brother, he went back to dancing. He performs a technically skilled contemporary routine mixed with ballet and the judges can’t hide the amazement on their faces. The judges said Nathan’s a well-rounded dancer, and they even compare him to some of the best Dance alumni. There’s just one problem: Nathan is only 17 years old, so he’s not eligible to compete in Season 5. Nigel said he’ll hunt him down if he doesn’t try-out next year. But then, Nigel decides to give Nathan a ticket to Vegas for Season 6 this fall, so he can bypass the initial audition and head straight to the semi-finals!
At the end of the first day in L.A., 24 dancers are going to Vegas.
It’s day two in L.A. and we meet Sammy Ramirez, a former wrestler who learned how to pop and lock in college from a guy who is now in prison. Sammy took the stage and performed a popping routine. He had control over the movement of every part of his body, including his hair. Sammy won over Adam and the rest of the judges. Sammy said he’s taken a little lyrical and jazz dance, but the judges want to make sure that Sammy is proficient enough in other areas of dance, so they send him to choreography.
Stacey House performed a frantic routine that was made of ‘80s dance moves. She is headed home empty handed, and was very upset about this.
Amanda Kerby’s dad has Multiple Sclerosis, but he has been symptom free for the past several years. Her dad inspires her, and she inspires him. Amanda performed a lyrical routine for the judges. Nigel said he was captivated by her beauty, but not her dance.
After constructive criticism from all the judges, Amanda is going straight to Vegas.Phillip Chbeeb auditioned for Season 4 of So You Think You Can Dance, but came down with pneumonia during the semi-finals and was forced to withdraw from the competition due to doctor’s orders. You also may remember Phillip’s exciting dance-off against fellow popper Robert Muraine at last year’s finale. This year, Phillip is back, but the judges don’t even need to see him audition. Instead, they sent him straight to Vegas.
Phillip remained on the stage to do something unexpected- partner a contemporary dancer named Arielle Coker. Arielle and Phillip met at school, and she was in a bad car accident with her family. Although Arielle and her dad were released from the hospital, her mom remained there for a long period of time, and Phillip took Arielle to the hospital many days after school. Her mom taught Phillip how to partner in 3 days from her wheelchair.
Arielle and Phillip danced for the panel, and the judges thought it was a clever pairing and really liked what they saw from Arielle. Adam likes that she brought out a better dancer in Phillip. Arielle is going straight to Vegas with her pal Phillip. We see quick auditions from Alexie Agdeppa, Diana Vaden, and Chanel Smith, three talented dancers who are all asked to stay for choreography.
Kevin “Shakiro” Cormier is nicknamed “Shakiro” because he swivels his hips like Shakira. He needs more training to hold a candle to what the other contestants can do, but the judges encourage him to keep dancing for fun, while avoiding competitions.
In choreography we see Sammy, Chanel, Diana, and Alexie. Everyone is going to Vegas! This means that 18 dancers from day two in L.A. are heading to Vegas.
The last stop for auditions is Seattle. So You Think You Can Dance hasn’t traveled to Seattle before. It’s rainy and gloomy…quite different from the first hour of this show! And guess who’s back? “Sex,” of course, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
Mia Michaels is the guest judge with Nigel and Mary. Mia has served as a choreographer and judge since Season 1. In 2007, Mia won an Emmy Award for her choreography during Season 2.
Christopher Keller specializes in Argentine Tango, East Coast Swing, and International Tango. He also plays with gender roles while dancing. Christopher entered the stage with his partner and danced a routine that lacked energy and skill, but it was still entertaining. Mary is laughing uncontrollably, and the laughter is contagious at the judges’ table. The judges aren’t sending Christopher to Vegas, but they encourage him to keep dancing socially. Christopher was a gentleman about it and said he hoped he didn’t embarrass his partner.
Nick “Nasty” Salzman is an aspiring tattoo artist and break dancer. During his audition, he asked for the music to stop towards the end of the routine because he was tired. He subscribed himself to going home. Mary said that she was going to say yes, but he started to disrespect Nigel, so the judges changed their opinions. Nick Nasty is going home empty handed.
Dmitrious Bistrevsky is a 6’6” b-boy who set his audition to aggressive music. He stated that he’s only been breaking for three months, and it shows. The judges tell Dmitri it’s a no.
Dmitri’s routine of rage provides a segue into a montage of dancers who are bad. Not one person in Seattle is good as of yet, and the judges are starting to get annoyed.
Kelsea Taylor was the next dancer hoping to show the judges that she was worthy of a plane ticket to Vegas. She performed a routine that the judges called zany and beautiful. Mary loved her musicality, and Nigel could tell that Sonya would love Kelsea. The judges send Kelsea to choreography.
There are 23 dancers in choreography, and Kelsea walks away with a ticket to Vegas. In sum, only three dancers from Seattle are going to Vegas.
The judges were hoping for a less stormy day in Seattle on day two of auditions. Kuponohi’ipoi Aweau is a dancer from Hawaii who performed a contemporary dance with a fold-up chair for the judges. The judges really liked Kupono, but Mary mentioned that although some of his moves were masculine, others were feminine. Nigel mentioned that Kupono dances like Season 4’s quirky contemporary dancer Mark Kanemura, who also hails from Hawaii. The judges send Kupono to choreography.
“Sex” is the nickname of David Soller, who has tried out every season but the first. Sex is back for his fourth audition, and he also brought back his very supportive mother. But first we’ll check in with another dancer.
Leonid Knyshov calls himself “Wise Leo” and is Ukrainian. He danced a spastic performance for the judges and he claims it was a jive routine. Mia requested a battle between Wise Leo and Sex. Sex asked his mom for permission, and his mom approved. Sex and Leo face-off for the “Battle in Seattle!” Round 1 went to Sex and his slinky moves. Round 2 saw floor action from Sex and a spin from Leo, so the judges called it a draw. In the deciding round, it was Sex’s shimmy versus Leo’s double spin. Then Sex performs the worm, while Leo step dances. Mia and Mary thought Leo won, and Nigel thought Sex won. That means Leo is the winner (although he is going home without a plane ticket), but Nigel was pleased with David’s tenacity, and suggested he attends choreography for a reality check. Sex attempted to compare himself to Season 4’s Twitch, and America rolled their eyes.
Over at choreography, I felt bad for Sex’s partner, but Sex worked hard. Nigel appreciated that he didn’t give up, but it’s a no. Sex is determined to come back again and again until he makes it to Vegas. However, Kupono is going to Vegas.
Only 8 other dancers will be joining Kupono in Vegas, for a total of 169 dancers that will be narrowed down to just 20.
Next up is Vegas week! The semi-finalists will face all of the choreographers, the most challenging routines, and the judges. Who will make the Top 20? We’ll find out on Thursday!

Recap: So You Think You Can Dance, Season 5, Premiere Part 2
Auditions: Miami & Memphis
First Aired: 5/27/09
Recap by Lauren B.
Bienvenido a Miami! The second episode of Season 5 brought the judges to Miami, and joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy on the judging panel was Tyce Diorio. Tyce has choreographed some of Dance’s most memorable routines, and is the go-to guy for Broadway choreography.Kicking off Miami auditions was Tony Riendeau, the inventor of “Tony Style.” You may not have heard of “Tony Style,” and after seeing his audition, I’m not sure if “Tony Style” will be sweeping the nation just yet. Tony flops around on stage and is not going to Vegas, however he does take a trip to the medic.
Priscilla Marrero is a Miami native, and we meet her while she is dancing on the hot Miami beach sand. If she dances this well on the audition stage, she should be able to earn a ticket to Vegas. Priscilla took the stage and danced with a whole lot of personality and she’s quite theatrical, so she won Tyce over. In fact, Tyce said she makes him “happy to be a dancer,” and Priscilla became choked up. Nigel and Mary appreciated her skills as well, so she’s going to Vegas.
Janette Marara and Romulo Villaverde are a ballroom couple who auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance last season. Janette got cut at the very end of the audition process, but that didn’t discourage her from coming back for another try. Romulo didn’t make it to Vegas last year, but he hopes to change that this season. They’ve worked out some new impressive moves and have more experience as a couple now. Their performance impressed the toughest ballroom critic, Mary Murphy, and the two are on their way to Vegas.
Twins Jennifer Guadix & Jessica Guadix taught themselves the art of ballet via textbooks. Despite this ballet background, they auditioned together with a hip hop routine. The judges were not impressed, and the twins are headed home. Perhaps they should pick up some books on hip hop.
Joseph Smith goes by the name “Schawam,” which he says is a word that can mean something is good or bad. As if that wasn’t confusing enough, Cat observes that he uses it interchangeably with “Schwizam,” a term that also excites Joseph. Joseph and all of his energy bounced onto the stage with the universal Schwam hand sign and he danced with humor. Mary jumped on the Schwam bandwagon by the end of the routine. The judges send Joseph to choreography.
Over at choreography, Joseph is the only dancer we were introduced to in the bunch, and the judges send him to Vegas because he worked really hard.
At the end of day one in Miami, 18 dancers received plane tickets to Vegas.
Day two in Miami began with Wislande Letang, a young lady in a bikini top who sauntered around the stage with a lack of enthusiasm. The judges tell Wislande it’s a no.
Erik “Silky” Moore has been tapping since he was 10. He has only danced tap and hip hop, but he’s serious about tap. Silky mentions that tap is a dying art and that dance shows don’t require tap performances from their contestants. He’s here to bring tap back! Silky began his routine and even threw in a moonwalk and some breakdancing moves. The judges thought it was a great audition and wanted to know what inspired Erik to take up dance. He mentioned that he was inspired by his brother who was a tapper and was getting a lot of girls from it. Nigel waves a Vegas ticket at him, and he collapses to the floor.
Miss Washington, Paris Torres, got started in pageants because of dance. Will she be more than just a pretty face and congenial attitude? The music began and Paris took the stage in a brown tutu and performed a contemporary/ballet routine to a slow version of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” The judges liked the routine and sent Miss Washington to Nevada.
Next, we met three talented contemporary dancers- Henry Rivero, Megan Kinney, and Alex Wong- and all three are going to Vegas.
Geo Smith is an African dancer. He performed a native African dance with drama and aggression, and it was really fun to watch. The judges want to see what other styles of dance Geo can master in choreography.
Talia Rickards married her sweetheart at age 18. They were married almost four years in 2006 when she received the worst news imaginable- her husband was killed in a motorcycle accident. Talia took this hardship as a lesson to live life to the fullest, which is what has inspired her to try out for So You Think You Can Dance. The judges thought her performance was fiery, but they thought it lacked a little technique and substance, so they send Talia to choreography.
Nineteen dancers battle it out in choreography, and both Geo and Talia leave Miami with plane tickets in hand.
Day two in Miami brings the total of Vegas-bound dancers to 32. Not too shabby!
The next stop on the Season 5 audition tour was Memphis, the city of rock ‘n roll and Elvis Presley. Would we see plenty of hip shakers in blue suede shoes? Joining Nigel and Mary at the judges’ table was Lil C, who introduced crumping to So You Think You Can Dance and served as a judge during part of Season 4.
The Memphis auditions began with a Special Ops police officer named Marico Flake. Marico explained his dance style, “Memphis juking,” as an underground style of Memphis dance that involves bouncing and rhythmic stepping. Sure enough, Marico threw in a quick Elvis inspired move, but it didn’t detract from his performance at all. Nigel said this style of dance has been underground for 20 years, and Marico was glad to bring it to the public. Hopefully the fellow jukers won’t mind that it’s been televised, because I have a feeling many people will attempt this smooth style of street dancing. Lil C said Marico’s performance was fundamentally sound and contained great humor. Shockingly the judges said “no to choreography,” but that’s because he is going straight to Vegas. Marico was thrilled!
Dustin Dorough is a hip hopper with a cop mom. He said, “My mom taught me how to be a man.” If Dustin’s last name sounds familiar to you, it’s because his cousin, allegedly, is Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough. Dustin performed his hip hop routine, and nailed a few moves, albeit none from the hip hop genre. When Nigel questioned this dance as being a hip hop routine, Dustin said he stripped out his power moves because he’s just getting over the flu and bronchitis. For someone getting over being ill, Dustin sure has a lot of energy! Lil C offered up the dance style of “tricking” for Dustin to try, because it would be a good way for him to fuse his love of b-boying with his martial arts background. Dustin will not be advancing in the competition, but he promises he’ll be back next year. Maybe he’ll introduce the audience to tricking.
Chris Carrozza invented his own dance style. Anyone who comes on this show with their own personal invented dance style usually makes the funnies reel, but not Vegas. Chris’ style is known as “Electric,” which is a mixture of many styles of dance. The music began, and Chris hopped side to side while moving his hands and whirling his dreadlocks around. When the judges critiqued his performance, Chris attempted to leave before Lil C was able to give his feedback, and Nigel explained to Chris that it’s rude to walk away. We won’t be seeing Chris in Vegas…at least not at semi-final auditions!
Chris’ audition provided a nice segue into the “Guide to a Good Audition.” Here are the steps to a successful audition, which were accompanied by some entertaining clips:
1) Start with your best move
2) Come dressed to impress
3) Connect with the judges
4) Always follow directions
So take note, Season 6 hopefuls!Caitlin Kinney’s last name may ring a bell. Her sister, Megan, audition in Miami during the first hour of the show, and Caitlin is in Memphis to audition as well. Megan made it to Vegas. Would Caitlin follow in her sister’s footsteps? Caitlin began classical ballet training as sophomore in high school. She took the stage and performed an amazing routine which showed off her ballet technique, her gymnastics background, and her grace as a dancer. It is amazing to me that she only started dancing in high school. Talk about a hidden talent! Mary called this her destiny. Caitlin did a one-handed cartwheel to celebrate her advancement to the semi-finals.
We check in with the Memphis dancers from day one who are taking a stab at choreography. Six additional dancers from choreography made it to Vegas.
On the second day of auditions, we meet Anna Dunn. Anna’s father took his own life, and Anna has been using dance as her outlet to cope. “I don’t have to talk about it, but I can move about it,” Anna told Cat. Her dad always supported her having a passion, so she’s here to represent him. Anna took the stage and performed a contemporary routine. The judges agreed that she’s as cute as a button, but also provided her with some constructive criticism. Nigel thought the routine was a bit over-choreographed, and she just needs to dance with a little more feeling and less head tosses. Mary said that Anna is a diamond in the rough. Lil C can empathize with Anna, as his father took his own life too. He says “you have to connect with that pain each time you step on the stage.” All three judges send Anna to choreography.
Travis Prokop is from Texico, New Mexico (it sure has a ring to it!) and is the son of a football coach. Growing up, Travis was picked on because of his passion for dance. The best part of the story is that his tough football coach father allows Travis to be who he is and supports Travis with whatever he chooses to do. Travis performed a lyrical number on the stage, and the judges suggested that Travis needs to work on getting stronger to support his tall frame. But before Travis has time to get buff, he’ll have to master choreography with Lauren Gottlieb.
Another dancer from last year’s Top 40 semi-finalists is back- Evan Kasprzak. Evan’s specialty is Broadway and jazz and this time his older brother is auditioning too. Evan took the stage and he definitely channeled Gene Kelly with this performance, which is what the judges loved about him last year. Evan is on his way to Vegas…again! We’ll check in with his brother later in the show.
A second set of twins are auditioning together. Lauren & Lydia Guerra talk in unison, but will they dance in unison? The twins performed a contemporary routine and they’re both very talented, but different. Nigel said that Lydia dances to the extremes and Lauren gives more performance. The Guerra girls said they get that critique a lot. The judges send Lydia and Lauren to choreography to see how they dance with other partners.
Evan’s brother Ryan Kasprzak is the choreographer behind most of Evan’s routines.
Ryan is doing a So You Think You Can Dance first- he’s performing a tap routine with a whoopee cushion. This could have gone south, but he’s talented so it was very entertaining and has great dance and comic timing. Nigel suggested choreography for Ryan, but Mary and Lil C thought he deserved a ticket to Vegas. With two judges voting for Vegas, there’s no need for choreography for Ryan. Both Kasprzak’s are on their way to Vegas! We check in with the dancers in choreography, and it was a great day for Lauren, Anna, Travis, and Lydia- who are all going to Vegas.
At the end of day two in Memphis, 15 dancers are on their way to the semi-finals in Vegas.
Next up, sunny Los Angeles and rainy Seattle!

Recap: So You Think You Can Dance, Season 5, Premiere Part 1
The recaps section of our site is not yet ready, but that won’t stop us from posting one here!
First Aired: 5/21/09
Recap by Lauren B.So You Think You Can Dance is back for a fifth season. The show traveled to six different cities and met thousands of dancers. Which dancers from last year will return for a second chance at making the Top 20? Is someone going to sustain an audition injury? Would “Sex” return for another audition? Only time would tell…
The first stop was in the city that never sleeps- New York City. And boy, did it look cold! Hopefully there would be some hot talent in this crowd. Host Cat Deeley braved the weather and the early hour to bust some moves with the Dance hopefuls.
Judging the New York dancers were Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo. Husband and wife choreographers Tabitha and Napoleon created some of America’s favorite hip hop routines last year, and they also sat on the judging panel at times. It’s good to have them back for their second season. The rules of the hometown auditions are the same as in past seasons. If a dancer is great, they get a ticket to the finals in Las Vegas, Nevada. If not, they go home. If the judges are torn, the dancers will be asked to stick around to perform choreography later.
Kicking off the season is Gabi Rojas, a young woman who was born and raised in the circus, and is a girl of many talents. Unfortunately, Gabi is struggling with rheumatoid arthritis. You can’t help but root for this girl! She dances a great contemporary routine and will excel with Mia and Sonya’s choreography. Nigel said he’d be surprised if she’s not in this year’s top 20, and this was one of the best auditions he’s seen in five years. Gabi got Mary’s first “woo” of the season. That didn’t take long! Tabitha compared Gabi to a bird, and Gabi is flying to Vegas.
Storyboard-P & Hobgoblin isn’t the name of the new horror flick at the Multiplex, they’re two dancers who have come up with their own unique style of dance called “Mutation.” The dance style consists of weird contortion moves that make you want to turn your head away from the TV, but you just can’t stop watching. What they’re doing is amazing, disturbing, and bizarre. I wonder how well they’ll handle ballroom routines? They get up and contort on the judges’ table, and Napoleon protects the shrieking panel of frightened judges. Nigel called the routine, “Dawn of the Dead- The Musical.” The judges liked it, but were confused, so Tabitha threw out the idea of having them stick around for choreography, and the rest of the panel agreed.
The first bad audition came from “Crazy Kate,” a West Coast Swing dancer and Lindy Hopper. Kate refers to herself as Crazy Kate because she’s crazy about dancing. The judges appreciated her passion, but not her technique, so Kate is going home empty handed.
Peter Sabasino is a tough Italian tap dancer. He was scared to audition last year, but this year he mustered up enough courage to take the stage. Peter’s tap routine was great, aside from the tank top and oversized basketball shorts he paired with his tap shoes. Nigel described his look as a “tap dancing boxer.” That’s not far off! Peter is like Rocky Balboa in tap shoes. The judges’ concern was that Peter might only be good at tap, but he said he can dance all styles. After getting a ticket to Vegas, Peter collapses, and says he hopes to be the first tapper in the Top 20 and Top 10 of So You Think You Can Dance.
Tiffany Geigel was born with a spinal deformity called Spinal Thoracic Dysplasia. The doctors told her parents that she wouldn’t live long, but Tiffany defied the odds. Here she is, not only alive, but dancing 23 years later. When Tiffany danced, you could tell she’s had training and that this is something she’s been doing for a very long time. Nigel commended her, saying that her “bravery is stunning.” After a standing ovation from judges and audience came the moment of truth. All of the judges admire her and find her to be an inspiration, but she’s not right for the competition. Tiffany took the news like a champ and was on her way home.
Season 3 Top 20 finalist Faina Savich is back, but she’s not here for a second season of fun. She’s here to partner Maksim Kapitannikov. Maksim took the stage with Faina and moved his hips in ways I didn’t know hips could move. The judges were so distracted by Faina’s beautiful dancing, that they would like for Maksim to stick around for choreography.
Next, we were treated to a montage of a few ballroom dancers who are going straight to Vegas, along with a contemporary dancer. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more from them soon!
Nobuya Nagahama claims he’s well versed in all different styles of dance, including “Voguing.” He does a soft locking routine at light speed, and the judges were impressed, but would like to see how he fares with choreography. Nobuya was a little too honest and said he doesn’t enjoy doing other styles of dance. Hmm, maybe this isn’t the right show for you, Nobuya!
At the end of day 1, there are 45 dancers learning choreography from Season 3’s Lauren Gottlieb, for a chance at a ticket to Vegas. Choreography treated several of the dancers well, including Maksim and Nobuya, who are both headed to Vegas. In sum, 27 dancers from day 1 are packing their bags for Vegas. Not too shabby!
It was day 2 in the Big Apple and Arielle Taylor is up first. Arielle auditioned for Season 3 of So You Think You Can Dance and made it to Vegas. Only a high school student at that time, Arielle admits to growing as a dancer and being ready for the competition this time around. After an amazing contemporary routine, the judges send her to Vegas once again.
A duo of Bolero dancers, Thomas Martin and Amanda Clark, auditioned, but the judges didn’t think they were quite good enough. This provided a good segue to some more dancers that weren’t up to SYTYCD par, although many provided the judges with a good laugh.
Nina Estrina and Igor Zabrodin are ballroom dancers that specialize in the Latin styles of dance. They’ve been partners for three years, so if they make it on the show, it will be interesting to see how they do with new partners. Igor spun Nina around so many times you could get dizzy just watching them. Nigel said, “you could put wet clothes on and spin dry them.” Igor humorously admits to having done that before. The judges invite Igor and Nina to stick around for choreography to see if they can perform well without each other.
Not afraid of superstition, Kellen Stancil performs a contemporary routine with an umbrella. He danced so well, that Nigel couldn’t help but exclaim, “Beautiful!” Mary asked what the umbrella means to Kellen, and he got choked up and said it represents his Aunt who recently passed away. The judges gave him a standing ovation and sent him to Vegas.
Chimezie Nwosu’s performance reminded me of Season 4’s Twitch. He has that magnetic personality when he dances and he’s very comedic with his choreography and timing. The judges all request that Chimezie stick around for choreography.
At the end of day 2, it was time to see how the remaining dancers did with Lauren’s choreography. Igor is going to Vegas, but unfortunately Nina is not. Chimezie, along with two other dancers, is going to Vegas as well. A total of 14 dancers from day 2 received tickets to Vegas, for a grand total of 41 semi-finalists from New York auditions.
The next stop for auditions was in Denver, Colorado. It looks cold here, too! Joining Nigel and Mary at the judges’ table is Sonya Tayeh, who joined the show last year and choreographed some of the most memorable jazz and contemporary routines of the season. This was Sonya’s first time on the judges’ panel.
Up first was Kayla Radomski, an 18 year old whose grandparents have been her biggest supporters, and even worked night jobs so they could take her to practice during the day. She performs a contemporary/jazz routine and it’s a dance that Sonya will probably really connect with. Kayla seems to have a good personality on and off the stage. The judges loved her arm work and everything else, so she is going straight to Vegas. Her grandparents were so thrilled that her grandfather even shed a few tears. After Kayla’s audition we see a montage of very good dancers, and Sonya seems to be moved by every dancer that takes the stage.
Next to audition were Misha Belfer and Mitchel Kibel, a pair of same sex ballroom dancers. At one point in the dance, Mitchel threw Misha on his back, and Misha struggled to get up. The judges sent them to choreography to see how well they would dance with new partners.
At the end of day 1 in Denver, 22 dancers attempt choreography. Mitch and Misha will not be continuing on in the competition, but 11 dancers are going to Vegas after the first day of Denver auditions.
Day 2 in Denver was kicked off with a young lady named Allison Moist, who was dressed as a lion, but she performed with light sabers. It was all very confusing, and the judges found her dance moves to be just as confounding. Allison is headed home, and so are a variety of dancers showcased in a montage of strange performances.
The Holloway brothers are the youngest of 14 siblings. These two were swimmers, but their siblings were all dancers and now they’ve caught the dancing bug. Elias Holloway is auditioning, but his brother is too young so he is just dancing with him for support. They perform a pop-locking routine that Mary thought was the cutest thing she’s seen in 5 years. She also thought the boys were very commercial. The judges send Elias to choreography.
Two very talented dancers from last year’s auditions are back- Brandon Bryant and Natalie Reid! Both were the 11th person in the top boys and top girls group, meaning they were the closest to making the show but didn’t. Natalie Reid is friends and roommates with Katee Shean, last season’s first place girl. Unfortunately, during the ultimate decision for who made it to Season 4, it came down to Natalie and Katee. Katee said if she didn’t make it, she wouldn’t try out again, but Natalie said she would. That almost made the judges rethink their decision, but ultimately their original selection of Katee for the Top 10 girls remained. During Natalie’s audition here in Denver, it’s easy to see how she made it so far last season. Her style is similar to Katee’s and she really feels the music and the story while she’s dancing. The judges couldn’t be happier to see her back. Sonya said she is Natalie’s biggest fan, and can’t even find words to describe her. After hearing such positive remarks, Natalie attempts to hold back tears. Mary loves the organic nature of the dance. Natalie thanked the judges for what happened last year because it motivated her to dedicate this past year to becoming a better dancer. Natalie called Katie to tell her the good news- she’s going to Vegas!
Brandon Bryant has a strong body which helps make his contemporary dance moves all the more powerful. After performing a nearly flawless routine, Mary is crying and says, “I have the greatest job in the whole world. If you don’t make it to the top 20, I’ll die this year.” Wow, he better make it because what would So You Think You Can Dance be without Mary Murphy?! Nigel tells him to develop a personality. At this early point in the competition, it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but this is a TV show, and if Brandon makes the show he’ll need that extra something to get viewers to pick up the phone for him. Of course, Brandon is going to Vegas.
At the end of the day, we check in with the dancers in choreography. Elias Holloway is not going to Vegas, but the judges ask him to come back next year. In sum, 19 Denver dancers are moving on to Las Vegas.
Next up, Miami and Memphis!
