Top 20 Finalists for Season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance Revealed! Individual Photos Added!

New: See the Profiles of the Top 20 Finalists
After thousands of auditions across the country and the grueling callbacks in Las Vegas, the judges of summer’s No. 1 series, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, announced Season Five’s Top 20 finalists tonight. The top girls include Randi Evans, Karla Garcia, Caitlin Kinney, Asuka Kondoh, Janette Manrara, Jeanine Mason, Kayla Radomski, Melissa Sandvig, Paris Torres and Ashley Valerio; and the top guys are Kupono Aweau, Tony Bellissimo, Brandon Bryant, Phillip Chbeeb, Jason Glover, Vitolio Jeune, Max Kapitannikov, Evan Kasprzak, Ade Obayomi and Jonathan Platero. See individual photos and bios below.
The competition truly begins Wednesday, June 10 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) as the Top 20 finalists dance for the judges’ praise and America’s votes on the season’s first performance show. The Top 20 are paired into 10 couples who will each work with a world-renowned choreographer to compose a dance routine representing their assigned genre. After each Wednesday performance show, the phone lines will open and the fate of these 20 finalists – one of whom will be the named America’s Favorite Dancer – will be left up to the voting fans.
On the live results shows beginning Thursday, June 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live PT/tape-delayed), the three couples with the lowest number of votes will be announced. Each week the six contestants comprising the bottom three couples are given a chance to perform solo routines in the hopes of convincing the judges to keep them in the competition. The judges then decide which dancers stay and which two are eliminated. If a couple is split apart, the two individual dancers who remain become a couple the following week.
Thursdays will also feature live performances by today’s hottest music stars and dance acts. On Thursday, June 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) Sean Kingston will perform his new hit single, “Fire Burning on the Dance Floor,” from his upcoming sophomore album, “Tomorrow,” live from the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE stage.

I think it was such a bad idea to eliminate natalie
I love this seasons top 20 and cannot wait for to see their performances….what a great group!

Pretty lame site…the finalists are announced and there aren’t any photos of who’s who, just names & information? Are you kidding me? No new wallpapers either? For a show that’s typically young & fresh in both contestants and audience, you’re really sucking at promoting the show on the web.
[...] and solos. (Note, this) article says Kupono started dancing at grade 5, but the Fox Blog bio here says at the age of [...]
I am very dissapointed in their top twenty. To pick one brother over another is not the problem, but to say we can not keep both because they have the same dance style is not fair. If you are looking for the best you put the best in the top twenty. There is more than one hip hop dancer. The judges need to find ten different dance styles and place one male and one female to compete or put in the best even if it was ten polka dancers if they were the best that tried out. Again I am very upset and don’t know if I will watch the show.
Love the show and how it is going. Is there a way for FOX to put up the Solos for the top 32 for our viewing? It feels the episodes are not long enough to give every dancer in the top 20 the same exposure.
Thanks,
Rich
Go Phillip!
I was a huge fan of the show until this week. Something must be done abouta Mia. I don’t care how many awards she has won, or who she is in the dance world, she has no right to talk to anyone the way she talked to Brandon this week. I am disappointed that Nigel allowed her to do it. He let this show air knowing what she said. Inexcusable! Who does she think she is? I have watched the show every single episode for the last three years, and I have gone to the tour the last two years. If Mia is allowed to do this one more time, it will be the last time I watch it. I will not listen to her cruelty again.
Congratulations top 20. I feel so disappointed that Alex Wong not on the show. Please, head of Miami City Ballet, could you change your mind?! Give the world an opportunity to enjoy your company’s dancer and he will let all of us to know how good that your company is.
Overall a great Top 20, but what happened to Alex from Vancouver? He was great!
I’m so excited! This is looking to be the best season yet! There are so many amazing unique dancers this season
./cheer
There is a serious lack of African Americans this year. And no girls of African Amercian origin made the top 10. This show needs more diversity and a better balance. Not all dancers are Caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes. if not for the 3 males, I wouldnt watch this year. I’m going to vote for them every week.
Was anyone else disappointed with how Vegas week went? Most of my favorites went home. Gabrielle was one of my favorites, but I understand why she didn’t make it. One of the toughest ones for me was went Natalie was sent home. I do not think she should have been cut at all. She was amazing, and Sonya even used her as an example on how to actually dance the choreography.
I’m still upset about it. She should have been in the top 20. I can only hope that she comes back, but I understand if she doesn’t.
GOOOO KARLA GARCIA!
-magicmike
boogiebots
why was natalie , katie’s roommate from last season, not allowed to dance for her life like others were ?
I love watching these kids go for their dreams!
What a talented group.

Mia’s work is great…..but she needs to show a softer side. I know she takes her dancing serious but lighten up a little. She was rather cruel if y
ou ask me.
Just wishing all “LOTS of Luck and Love” Have a a good time and enjoys the experience.

woooohooooooo miami so proud!!!!
I love a lot of people. My favorite right now is Caitlin, but everyone is amazing
Ashley is my jazz teacher! She ROCKS!!!
GO JASON!!!
i’m so excited for so you think you can dance!! i can’t wait to see Brandon dance!! it’s going to be a great season =)
Looking forward to the start of the competition. Good luck to you all!
BUFALO, NY CAN DANCE!!!!
Im not sure why auditions have yet to come here!
First, there was Neil and now Tony.
CONGRATS, TONY! thanks for putting us on the map…AGAIN!
Do you have a list of the top 20 audition city and their dance number assigned to them. I like to keep a record of the Top 20 for reference sake.
For the girls, I havn’t seen many of them dance but I know for sure that I like Asuka; I’ve never seen Karla Garcia dance but she toured with Wicked, and so did Adam Lambert, so I hope she’s good because that’s awesome xD
For the guys I REALLY like Kupono, but I wish he didn’t get rid of his mohawk thing, it was so cool! And I also like Philip Chbeeb and Tony Bellissimo because he was absolutely hilarious and awesome, lol. I can’t wait till Wednesday!
Good luck to all the top 20.
And to Pono, geev ‘em! Pomaika`i! Hawai’i no ka oi! Malama pono from one of your fans in Hawaii!
ALOOOOHHHAAAA!
How was Alex Wong not allowed to get out of his contract? I’m pretty much certain that you can’t force someone to keep an employment contract, that’s known as indentured servitude (a.k.a slavery) and it’s not allowed in this country. Even if he signed a non-competition agreement, it shouldn’t apply to this show because SYTYCD doesn’t have a ballet portion and they are typically limited to a limited type of work and geographical area (last I checked Miami was pretty far from LA).
The excuse was horrible and it’s sad to see him go when he obviously had SO much talent.
Don’t even get me started on the fact that Natalie didn’t get a chance to dance for her life… Bad form judges.
My Favorites:
Janette
Asuka
Caitlin
Brandon
Phillip
I really hope Natalie comes back — I’m a little irked at why they didn’t let her dance for her life, but I could tell that she was a little off when she performed it for them — But still!
Anyway, I’m really excited for this season, nonetheless. Although, a little irked at the fact that they split up the brothers. But perhaps this season they’re doing more… contemporary stuff? idk I hope the other one comes back next season, he was my favorite.
How can you say theres a serious lack of african americans when three of the ten guys are? Plus you mentioned that not all dancers are blonde with blue eyes, yet theres only 3 out of the entire top 20? It shouldnt be about their race, but about how they dance, too bad you cant see that.
so glad asuka and brandon made it! words can’t describe how disappointed i am that natalie is not here. i definitely feel that was a mistake. i think it’s going to be hard for brandon because everyone expects so much of him already. but i’ll def be cheering for him. glad i’m not the only one that thinks mia was out of line with her comments, geesh.
and yea i so wanted alex to make it. he’s amazing!
I have to say now that Alex Wong has been eliminated (due to contract issues with the Miami Ballet Company[Villella]) this seasons already gotten a little bit boring. I was completely devastated that Villella didn’t let Alex off the contract just for a little while, he was such an amazing dancer! It would have been nice to see an asian contemporary guy on sytycd. Hopefully he’ll be coming back sometime soon.
I am very excited about this seasons group. The talent it very high. For those who are “disappointed” in Mia’s behavior or with favorites like Natalie being cut remember that it is a tv show and thus the people behind the scenes have to think about who will be the best dancers but also who will be the best characters. There were so many talented dancers who probably should have made it on but it can only be so many a season.
For the person who made the comment about not enough African Americans on the show: I’m sorry you feel that way but did you take a look at the line up. Only 3 of the top 10 are blonde girl wise, there is at least one Polynesian and one Haitian (determined from their interviews not appearance.) It makes me a bit sad that you base “diversity” strictly on skin tone. I know many people who could pass for white, including myself, who are not of Caucasian/European decent. It will be a great move forward when people can look at the diversity in our dance and the strength of our hearts instead of the melanin in our skin.
I don’t understand why the judges eliminated Natalie!!! I just don’t get it…and what a rude way to eliminate her!!! I think the judges made a huge mistake in this years top 20. There were much better dancers that auditioned that should have made the top 20 that didn’t. I’ll watch the season, but the judges better pick a better season 6 top 20!!!!
i totally agree with some of the above posts, Natalie was amazing and should have lasted longer then she did. I also believe that Mia was a bit harsh with her critique of Brandon and some of the other dancers. i understand that her job is to criticize but i was completely shocked by how inconsiderate and mean she appeared to be. And to comment on the two brothers i defiantly agree that both should have been on the show everyone this year seems to be contemporary dancers what happened to have a well rounded group of dancers? i am sure there was room for both brothers and feel they were stronger and more charismatic then some of the others. despite this i am excited to see how this season goes and hope that there will be improvements next year
Oh God! You judges are perfect, i love the way you handle the show. I love you all.
Caitlin i hope to see you in the finals, you are my favorite. Please, do what you know best. DANCING.
Best of luck to you ALL.
SOOO STUPID FOR TAKING NATALIE OFF, BIG MISTAKE
I can’t believe they didn’t pick Natalie
A lack of African-American dancers? Every season, including this one, has had many dancers from a variety of backgrounds. You’re worried about blond dancers taking over? There are only three this season. The last two seasons have been won by dancers of African decent. I think it is EXTREMELY disrespectful of you to assume that the producers or judges or whoever are intentionally leaving out dancers based on the color of their skin. They are looking for the BEST dancer, regardless of ethnicity. For you to assume that a blond Caucasian dancers wouldn’t be able to out-dance an African-American dancer, but would simply win based on their ethnicity actually makes YOU sound like the problem. And voting based on someone’s skin color and not their ability to dance…that makes YOU the racist.
Mia is a judge. It is her job to criticize. I don’t think her words were especially nasty, all she said was that she didn’t think Brandon was all he was hyped up to be. I am sure she will change her tune down the line. Cut her some slack.
so bummed about natalie
i was heartbroken when they sent her home.
having watched jeanine mason dance for many years against and with my daughter, i am delighted to see her finally get a break into the industry where her heart has lead her for years. as the cameras did not focus on her very much during auditions, america is in for a very special treat when she performs for them next week.
I find it interesting that so many people are angry about Natalie. Yes,she was a beautiful dancer but when it came to being in front of the the judges/under pressure—-she caved. I think the right people are in the top 20. It should be a great season.
What dose Cat Mean by Angel of dume these words were flying out of Simon Cowells’ mouth during Idol Season 8 for Instance when coming to the finale Simon told the Guys get ready for the Big Ding Dong. The Dictionary for this show as I said yesterday that term is hightower Level how many contestants arte going to make that and preferably beat that level Chelsea Hightower who was on this show last year on Season 4 and moved on to Dancing with the stars.
Regarding the post about the lack of African Americans in the competition: Come on, I want to see the best dancers, regardless of color. You can’t expect there to be equal representation of every race, in any season, b/c the competition is based on dancing–nothing else! Let’s keep it that way! I agree with the other responding posts: By voting purely on race, you are committing the offense you supposedly hold in such contempt. If you are a true fan of the show, I urge you to reconsider your voting.
As far as the dance contract with Alex: How is that slavery? People have contracts all the times with their jobs. I’m not going to pretend I know that business, but I’m pretty sure Nigel and Co. do, and that’s why they checked in on it. Hey, it gives us something to look forward to in the upcoming seasons! I liked Alex too!
GO KARLA!
Filipinos rock!
The problem with Mia’s criticism is that it had no substance. Who knows, maybe she justified her attitude in comments that were not broadcast, but what we saw was simply content-free personal animus on display. The other posters are right - it was extremely ugly.
I love Evan most, I wish he could win this whole thing!
it wasnt fair at all to cut Natalie, yeah, maybe she didnt performed the routine that good, but cmon, they couldve at least give her a second chance. like with Tony for example, and hes a lot less experienced dancer than her.
but then again every year im disappointed with someone not making it into the top 20 and every year the show keeps getting better. cant wait to see Brandon getting contemporary/Mia, I hope he would finally get some credit.
the fact that there are no videos online of this - especially full episodes - is totally frustrating. I can’t wrestle the remote away from my husband and I always miss something. Now I know who made it, but where is the fun in that? I wanted to SEE it. Where can i find full episodes of sytycd?
Congratulations top 20 !!! I LOVE U!!! - Greetings from Bulgaria
I like tony the best
I used to think Nigel was just a dirty old man, but he’s right when it comes to Asuka. She’s mesmerizing!
Go Brandon! I was amazed by his strength last year, and he’s a little more fluid this year. Obviously, not fluid enough for Mia though. Dance is so subjective, she needs to just chill. I’ve only cared for a couple of her routines over the life of the show, but that’s because I don’t care for her contemporary touchy-feely BS.
And for the guy complaining about the contract being non-binding, a contract is a contract dude. People need to man up and honor their commitments. Too often, people want the employer held to the contract while they want to skirt their responsibilities. Sorry, but that lack of honor is one thing wrong with our society.
I just love Tony, just like any of his fellow rivals, he is so emotional about what he loves and he lets that show in his dance. I would love to see him win, he has what it takes. He just needs to focus on studying other forms of dance, because this show will challenge him in a huge array of dance styles and forms. I think the world loves Tony, he’s passionate and cute, beautiful smile and most important- powerful dancer. Good Luck Tony and the same to the rest of the Top 20!!!
Love the show. Was disappointed when Nat didnt get to dance for her life but hope she will return. I am soooo excited to see what everyone can do and will watch no matter what .Mia
rocks !!!! and Lil C is SO HOTTTTTT!!!
does anyone know what the name of the song of the dance that sonya choreographed… something about girls and boys?
im so excited for season 6 and that nathan guy who was 17… he was my favorite audition pretty much. the top 20 is a little disappointing but oh well whatever. natalie choked but she wasnt that amazing.
Supremely disappointed that Natalie and Alex are not in the Top 20… I’m peeved that Gabi got multiple opportunities, but Natalie was not. Gabi, while a lovely dancer, cannot seem to grasp anyone else’s choreography, and Natalie did. She deserves a top 20 spot. And, what happened to Alex was as wrong as what happened to Hok a few years ago. It’s ridiculous… And, putting one brother against another…come on we really don’t need that much drama. That was wrong……….
But, congrats to the Top 20!
Go Melissa the Naughty Ballerina!!!
I think Natalie should have been given another chance. But she now has national exposure and will probably get lots of offers. And about Alex Wong having to leave, the Miami Ballet should have let him stay!!!!! He was probably their big $$$maker. And for Mia, she is not quite the god she thinks she is.
I don’t think it was fair that Brandon and Natalie were used to show examples of how the the dance should be done, then both of them were criticized. Where was Sonya? Natalie should have had a chance to dance for her life. Mia was a little harsh.
Alex Wong was pure awesome, wish he could have continued. Asuka is Beautiful, so is everyone else but she really stands out to me. Go Phillip!
KARLA GARCIA IS FIERCE!!!
GO KARLA!!!!!!!!!
Ryan and his brothers both are fantastic, they brought back old fashions that only exist in movies to life. It’s unfair for juges to eliminate one of them.I cannot help thinking that producer chose Evan because he’s younger, because Ryan did prove himself that he has that talent to dance as well as his talent for choregraphy.
Has anyone noticed that there is going to be a fall season? I am excited about that but disappointed that it seems that meant they cut the audition and Vegas shows short and we didn’t really get a chance to get to know the dancers. And as far as Mia goes yes she is a judge and yes she is entitled to speak her opinion but I think she was deliberately being mean and disrespectful to Brandon and that is completely uncalled for if you don’t believe me, Lil C also did not favor Brandon but no one is saying anything about him because he handled it appropriately
During the first seasons, Nigel presented himself as a genial emissary from, and supporter of, the World of Dance. He encouraged and appreciated all the young dancers. Has he shown his true colors, or has he been corrupted by Fox TV? Starting last year, with the Katie/ Nataliee face off, running through the debacle of inviting “Sex” to audition yet again, and coming up to putting Evan and Ryan through the horror of competing head to head against each other as “entertainment”; he has shown himself, as executive producer, to be a crass, catering to the lowest denominator, “this may be cruel, and immoral, but it will make great TV”, jerk.
So Overall I’m pleased with this year’s top 20 and can’t wait for Wednesday, but really, I find that I can’t help but be a little frustrated.
I know that most of the dancers that try out for the show and are able to work the choreography fall into an almost limited dance scope, but I have to say that I find it hilarious that the judges can claim the reason for cutting the one Kasprzak brother (please not I hold no special love for the brothers, splitting them up isn’t “cruel” or anything - it’s an audition, people get cut deal with it - they just make a good example) as not wanting to seemingly overload on one style of dance, but it’s perfectly valid to have 11 - count ‘em 11 - dancers that claim or half claim their specialty as contemporary. While I understand contemporary dancers often have extensive other training and there are HUGE differences between dancers, the latter can also be said about any style of dance. I love contemporary, don’t get me wrong, but it almost seems as if there’s a double standard here… LAME!
Mia owes Brandon one HUGE apology for her thoughtless, nasty and insensitive tirade. It was INEXCUSABLE. I wish they would take her out of the judges chair forever - she is a crappy, biased judge and I HATE listening to her rag on people and degrade them over things that have absolutely NOTHING to do with their dance performance.
As for the choreography, she has done some good things - but I like the other choreographers much better - except for Wade Robson - don’t know why people rave over his Zombie dances, they are all the same.
What happened to Natalie? I totally missed the part where she didn’t make the top 20!
welll I’m super excited about Phillip
and looking forward to this season(Y)
YAY!!!
hehe im SO EXCITED!!
LOVIN the top 20 this year!!
except i would replace caitlin with Natalie.
i actually cried when she got sent home
she didnt even get to dance for her life
I was also very sad to see Natalie go, but I agree with the comment that said it matters what she did in front of the judges. She was a bit off and nerves are going to be even higher when millions of people are going to be watching and voting for her on the show as well as the judges.
I am excited to watch the show and think there are a nice mix of dancers. The bottom line about there being many contemporary dancers on the show this season is: So What??? Everyone is going to have to dance in all the styles and so it will be an equal stretch for everyone during the weeks they dance in other styles. I’m excited to see.
About the dancing brothers: I was frustrated they came of with the crazy excuse as well. However, as I type here, I think it’s better. I think they got rid of the brother who might have what it takes to come back next year. I think it would have been really terrible for us to see them compete on a more personal level and get kicked off the same season. This way if he comes back, he won’t be competing with his brother.
Definitely they suck a little bit, but it’s not only a dancing show. Someone was right in saying it’s a TV Show as well. They have to pick these people as a cast as well.
Whew. Done.
Does anyone know why they dont show the episodes online? And if they do where do you go, bc its not listed on the watch full epsiode tab.
Also, about the “lack” of african american dancers. Seriously?! I’m hispanic and yet couldnt even tell you if there are any hispanics or how many are in the top 20 even though i just read all their profiles. Racism will only stop when people stop taking some things so personal and giving it the attention thats unnecessary.
Natalie was sweet, but I didn’t feel she was a strong enough dancer to make the cut. Then again, I was pretty surprised by some of the judges’ choices. It seems like they’re based on who will make for a good show, rather than who is most talented/skilled. But I guess we need to remember this is a competition for America’s FAVORITE Dancer, not America’s BEST Dancer, so personality has to be part of the equation.
I have never been a fan of Mia, and dislike her choreography in the extreme. I don’t care how many awards she gets, her style is ugly IMO. I think she is so much her own greatest fan that she now thinks of herself as God’s gift to dance. Her behavior already this season has only enforced my negative opinion of her, and I was not surprised in the slightest when she spoke so viciously to Brandon. I don’t like him, either, but what she said was way beyond necessary. Kudos to Mary for putting her in her place!
Too many unknowns in the Top 20 to choose favorites yet, although if forced to, I’d pick Kupono and Caitlin.
There’s no diversity in this group when it comes to dance styles. 11 out of the 20 have specialty in Contemporary. I’m not dissing the style as it is a beautiful style, but I wanna see people with different dance backgrounds trying to do the things they have little or no training in. Joshua last season has only background in Hip Hop, and look how well he adapted to the other genres. He did so well, that he won! I hate that there is only one Hip Hopper in this entire group.
The show would be much better if they at least doubled the amount shown of Vegas week. I’m fairly confident in the judges but was left wondering by some of their decisions because what was shown on the air didn’t always seem to back up their decisions. I think if they showed more of Vegas week that many of our questions and/or doubts would be answered.
I thought the judges were harsh on the dancers that had done great tryouts. I too was total impressed with Alex Wong and was waiting to vote for him. I do hope that the Miami Ballet lets him compete on SYTYCD.
Although I am very upset about Natalie, I hope to see a good season! A little odd with 11 contemporary dancers however. I’m so glad to see Phillip back.
BEST OF LUCK DANCERS:)
Admitting that you will be voting for the African-American dancers based on their skin color makes YOU the racist! They chose the dancers based on skill, not on how many people of each race there needed to be…which is as it should be. To cut an amazing dancer from the top 20, such as Randi or Paris, just for the sake of having less white girls, would be every bit as racist in every sense of the word.
That Henry kid from Miami was amazing! I can’t believe he got cut. I might not even watch it now that he was cut
yeah, i totally agree with the comment above me! that kid was amazing! i feel like sometimes they don’t pick the best dancers…. i definitely think henry should have been in top 20. hopefully he tries out for next season! he has my vote.
OMG EVAN EVAN EVAN!!! HES SO ADORABLE!!! AND I LOVE TO SEE BROADWAY TAKING A CHANCE!!!! GO EVAN!!!
If Mia can’t start backing up her opinions and giving them in ways that aren’t predatory or offensive I think she should be replaced by Sonya on the judges’ panel. Sonya has less experience on the show, but I like her and if Mia were to be replaced, Sonya would be my choice. Mia is obviously not going to be replaced though so I’ll just say what she should change. Right now she’s just saying “I don’t like you” and in a very rude way at that; what she should start saying is “I don’t like you BECAUSE” and start being a bit more polite. How the heck are any of the dancers supposed to know what to improve if the comments against them just seem to be personal attacks?
I agree with MT and Vivian….why are some making this a racist thing? You sound like the racist yourself complaining about the lack of african-americans when you actually have a large diverse group of folks in this show. There is white, black, latino.. what more do you expect? They picked the dancers they felt were the 20 best. While I would like to see a couple of different people in the top 20 based on skills, overall they did a great job. And by the way, 2 of the judges were african-american and they helped pick this top 20!!!! And as far as no african-american females, their favorite female was Gabi but she was just not strong enough in other styles… brilliant at what she did but could not adapt. I wish people would quit making everything about race. This is equal opportunity based on skill not skin color!
Mia really is getting BORING!!!
In general I like Mia though. I have enjoyed many of the dances she choreographed, she just seems to be a bit harsh lately.
I think a video of each finalists solo should be available on the site to see. Especially since some of the finalists had extremely limited air time while others had a lot.

GO PHILLIP AND ASUKA!!!1 MY 2 FAVORITES!!!!! LOVE U BOTH!!!
I THINK ARIEL SHOULD HAVE MADE IT!!!!! I AM SO MAD THAT SHE DIDN’T!!!
My DVR didn’t tape last show revealing the top 20. I have to say I am disappointed also that the brothers did not get chosen together. We have tons of contemporary and hip hop dancers. What is wrong with having two broadway dancers? They have to perform what they are taught so the better dancer would have come out then. Yes, he can come back but still think it was wrong.
I am also upset Natalie did not get the chance other dancers did to dance for their life.
I am with everyone else who was disappointed to see Natalie go… I think the judges got it wrong there. (But who am I to say that? I’m just voicing my displeasure.)
Kind of disappointed with the top 20. My favorite contestant would be Evan. He is the only one out of the top 20 who I liked during the whole audition/elimination process. I’m not sure about the rest. I am looking forward to see what they all can really do. So far, they haven’t proven to me anything. I wish Nat was on the list.
I agree with Chris where is the diversity in dance styles? I would love to see a tapper let alone a tap routine on the show. It seems like you might as well just forget about being on the show if you are a tapper because it is not flashy enough. Let some of the contemporary go.
On another note, Mia has irked me beyond believe with her over the top criticism of Brandon. Who can we write to about her nasty attitude?
Lastly, Natalie was fabulous and her elimination will be the great mystery of Vegas in season 5. I wish they had footage of her in comparison to the entire group that was dancing.
GO EVAN!
WOO HOO!
I didn’t get to see the last episode revealing the top 20 dancers but, looking at the bios, I don’t remember any of them except Brandon, Caitlin, Phillip, and Asuka. I heard most of the contestants had limited air time. I’m definitely disappointed that Nat didn’t have a chance to dance for her life. Everyone else had an opputunity except Nat. The judges are not thinking of the dancing; they are only thinking of who will look better and make for a good show. Hopefully, next season’s show will be about the dancers and not the ratings.
that vitolio guy is kinda hooot i can’t wait to see him dance
Did anyone else think it was peculiar, the way they cut Natalie like that? I’m so confused - Gaby messed up very, very badly, and they put her through to another round, she did very badly again, and she got to dance for her life. Natalie did OK, not 100%, but not HORRIBLE, and it was a swift cut? I don’t understand this - if you’re Nigel’s “Favorite,” you get extra breaks?
There has to be another reason - their cut of her was COLD and ridiculous. She’s proved herself to be an excellent dancer, and she came THISCLOSE to making it to Top 20 last year. So why did they cut her the way they did? Why give Gaby and Tony so many chances and just automatically cut Natalie?
I can See where Randi Evans and Tony Bellisimo would make a pair as dancing partners in this show this season.
I’m so glad that Gabrielle girl didn’t make it through. She did ONE unique dance and they love her? No, they love her sob story. I get it, all the dancers have their stories and such and that’s how they can keep the audience’s attention. But come on, the judges didn’t even give natalie a chance to dance for her life? I hope for her sake that she got a contract right away or something, ANYTHING. She totally deserves it.
I think Mia’s confrontation of Brandon basically breaks down to this: He’s got too much talent for her to work with. His dancing is so emotional, i think she figures he’s too much for her to work with. She pointed out it’s his attitude, but sorry Mia, your attitude wasn’t attractive.
I wish Alex Wong would of made it. I can understand that his contract holds, but I honestly cannot believe they couldn’t do something about it. He is such a beautiful dancer, people need to see more of it.
Hopefully this season will bring a bunch of new choreographers and dance styles to make up for the disappointment so far.
good luck, Top 20. some of you need it.
I agree with most of the people who posted, I’m a bit surprised at the top 20 especially the girls. I was extremely upset that Natalie got sent home. I know the show is edited but they made it seem so abrupt and sudden because they didn’t let her dance for her life or do the combination again like they did Gabrielle (who while her personal style was good, she could pick up other choreography to save her life) I was really pissed that they seemingly gave her(Gabrielle) several chances to redeem herself and then offered Natalie none. I wanted Sonya to stand up and protest or something if she thought Nat was so great!! Fox or Nigel or someone should put up a statement on this site to explain this to fans because It has us really upset.
i am soooo excited that evan kasprzak is in the top 20!!! i love him so much and he is a phenomenal dancer. its so crazy because he lives in west bloomfield, michigan and i live not too far from there. he also went to groves high school and thats where my dance recitals have been at. go evan! i also like jason glover
i am sooooooo excited that evan kasprzak made it into the top 20!!! i love him so muchhhh and he is a phenomenal dancer. im really excited to see him on the show this season along with jason glover
Looks like a great season to me. The only thing that concerns me is Mia! She absolutely needs to go. There are other dance styles besides contemporary. Her choreography is generally so depressing that I want to slit my wrists. I don’t think everything needs to be happy dances like the musicals of the 50’s, but hers are ridiculous. They ALL seem about her pain. As far as I’m concerned she just needs a therapist to deal with her personal issues and leave the dances to someone else for awhile. She showed absolutely no merit for telling Brandon that she thought he was complete s**t. Why was that necessary? I guess will have to watch all her numbers this season to find out what’s on her mind now.
I do believe that we got a really good top 20, though. I’m quite excited to see it play out.
Thots:
1) There REALLY needs to be more in-depth coverage of the top 20 BEFORE the 1st elimination vote. For example: their solos from Vegas Week, their original auditions, their Vegas week eliminations. The shows up to this point simply do not give us, the audience, equal exposure to each of them.
2) There needs to be a way to allow/provide more opportunities to Hawai’ian dancers (AND dance). But still, it’s good to see another local this season.
3) What was Mia’s (and the producers’) motivation behind her on-air outburst? Is she afraid for her favorite? Are the producers trying to sway our opinions going into the 1st vote this week?
4) It would have been nice to see more of Alex Wong’s performances during Vegas Week BECAUSE we will not get to see him the rest of this season.
I think it’s so unfair that Natalie didn’t get to dance for her life when she was off slightly on one routine, but they gave Gabi like a million chances and she was way off on every routine.
My only gripe about this show is how a lot of the dancers can be constituted as “professionals”. When you’ve worked for big productions or dance companies, as far as I’m concerned, you’re professional. I know it’s supposed to inevitably be about America’s Favorite Dancer, however it really loses credibility when it’s no longer about procuring base talent, and really seeing dancers grow, as much as it’s become an exposure ground for the already successful. That’s why I was so happy to see Joshua win last year. The one to look out for this year would be Phillip, with no training, and a natural ability that will be exciting to see him expand upon.
I do think that what Mia said to Brandon was harsh, but I saw what she was talking about. I don’t know, his personality rubs me the wrong way for some reason. I’m hoping he proves me wrong, though, because he is a great dancer.
GOSH!!!…although i like Mia’s choreography, this is why i hate her as a person…she’s just way too harsh…the way she treated Brandon was too over the top….although i don’t like Brandon either
so disappointed abt Natalie not making it further…if they cut her in jazz…then they shoul’ve cut Gabi in hip hop….she was way worst than Natalie…i hate ppl like Gabi in the show…just being dragged to get further because of how unique she is…IF U SUCK AT OTHER STYLES….THEN U JUST SUCK…I WAS SCREAMING AT THE TELEVISION GOING LIKE….WTF???…CUT GABI ALREADY…WTF IS WRONG WITH U PPL
as for the brothers…i’m so glad both didn’t make it…Evan is the better dancer,to be frank…i don’t think Ryan is that good…i thought his first audition was just a gimmick…if they had both made it…the votes would split between…or maybe Evan would get more votes because he is more marketable….BUT HEY…IF RYAN DOESN’T MAKE IT….he could always be back to do choreography
i don’t really watch so you think you can dance but a lot of the people seem good this year so i am probably going to watch it. i am voting for Jeanine Mason because she’s 18
This is the first season I am not super excited for. There doesn’t seem to be the wide range I am used to from SYTYCD! Everyone seems to be lyrical/contemporary dancers. Where are the more than ONE or TWO hip hop underdogs? Where are the different styles in the ladies category? Don’t get me wrong…I will still faithfully watch the show…But for the first time…I don’t have an immediate favorite.
eric moore would have won the entire competition had you kept him in the running where he belongs. he is the most gifted dancer I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. it makes no sense why he’s not a finalist.
Natalie should have been allowed to at least dance for her life, just like some of the other dancers were given that opportunity. i think the judges cut her a bit prematurely. other than that the top 20 looks awesome.
Donna Barkley how lame that you would try to pull a race card because only 3 of the top twenty are african american. Did you forget Josh from last season??? Who cares if they didn’t make it to the top; they made a lot of surprising cuts this season and honestly, is it not so much who makes it but the fact that each person, regardless of race, has the right and privilege to dance and compete for the show that matters. I think this is far from a racial issue; and its rather pathetic that you would try to make it one. :/ How very, very, sad.
I think it’s not fair at all that Natalie didnt get a chance to dance for her life. nor that she was having to help show the others how to dance that routine so she was tired by the time she went out there. I think that, that was crazy and they had some sort of stick up their butts. Mia I love the way you show dance and you have major skills but that by no means mean you can talk to people the way that you are. hard love is okay to a point when you stick to the subject at hand. but on national televison watch you need to put yourself back into human mode and have a heart girl.
I think they picked a good Top 20, for the most part. I think Caitlin Kinney and Tony Bellissimo will be some of the first to go… I don’t love either of them. But they picked some great people, like Brandon and Phillip. I’m looking forward to see everyone compete.
Go Phillip!!!!!! Very talented group, and my winnner is Asuka!!!! Go Phillip and Asuka!!!!
There’s lots of hype about SYTYCD and a lot’s been mentioned by everyone.
That being said, remember that the world doesn’t center around SYTYCD: USA. It’s just a platform and an opportunity to dancers. There are other chances, other opportunities out there.
Some of you think Natalie being cut was cruel. But in showbiz, harsh things happen. Nigel and his producers are focused on producing a great show, and sometimes, stuff fall by the wayside.
I’m also bummed that Natalie got cut, but she’s incredibly talented and has a great future ahead of her. I hope she returns for Season 6, but I won’t be surprised if she doesn’t show up for next season’s audtions. To get cut two seasons at the dearth, pick yourself up and come back for more…it takes a lot…and says a lot. Kudos to her and perhaps it’s time to move on with something else.
Like I said, SYTYCD isn’t everything.
“There is a serious lack of African Americans this year. And no girls of African Amercian origin made the top 10. This show needs more diversity and a better balance. Not all dancers are Caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes. if not for the 3 males, I wouldnt watch this year. I’m going to vote for them every week.”
to the person that said that . . .
an african american won the past two years,
and a “blonde haired girl” has NEVER won.
and the top 10 girls only have three blondes.
the other seven represent other races.
this show is diverse.
All in all, I think they picked a great bunch of dancers. Naturally, I don’t agree with all their choices, that’s to be expected. It’s a shame Natalie and Alex aren’t competing… but I said that last year about Brandon and Evan and here they are in this year’s top 20!
People are commenting on Mia’s cruelty? What about Tyce Diorio during the auditions? That man is a disgrace to the show.
I’m a big fan of Jason Glover because he has a lot of personaility. Brandon is awesome. Do not agree with Mia’s comments about him.
The race thing about the dancers need to stop. Stop voting because of race! Geez. I hope best of luck to ALL of the Top 20. And Keep an eye out for Jason G. people!
I think that this years pick are decent. I feel though that Mia needs temper management…. I am merely disappointed that Natalie did not make it this year. I think that if you were going to allow Tony to dance again or others for their lives then she should have had the chance. I do not really like how things are ran this year…there are some that were average and are given the chance and the best were thrown away. I wish everyone luck and I will be watching. I cant wait to see the dances and dancers.
R U Serious ? U R going to vote just because of their color ? What year is this ??? I give points on who has worked the hardest , can perform and entertain me the most, and who I would pay good money to see ! NOT what color they are !! Come on people !!! The show is called SYTYCD not SYTYCD&ABorW. Jeesh !!
I definitely agree, there were some questionable decisions made over the course of Vegas Week, but in the end I still feel so lucky to be able to see such phenomenal dancing every week.
As to Alex Wong, it’s incredibly disappointing to have to see him go, but contracts with a ballet company like his generally last for just under a year - considering his emotional reaction to having to be sent home, I’d be very, very shocked indeed if we didn’t see more of him. He’s phenomenal.
OMG. i loove philipp. iff hee doesn;tt make top four i will cry, i think it;s an overall good groupp. thee guys look much more intense than the girls though, i hoppe its a greatt seasonn good luck to all the dancerss.
iloveyouphilipp . .
I also think there are too many dancers that are “professionals”. I think if you’ve got a contract and is getting paid and doing it as a “living”- you’re a professional. I’m glad they didn’t let Alex off the hook. A contract is a legal binding and you should know its term before you try out for this show and gotten permission from the company personally, not by Nigel calling your boss. I wouldn’t like it either if I was his boss. If he wants to try other styles he can do it at his spare time.
I also agree with other poster that there’s not enough hip hop or variety of style in the group. there’s no hip hop girls this year at all. That’s what’s fun about this show, seeing other dancer trying other dances and shine.
I think Mia’s got it right. She know what she’s talking about and I don’t think she was harsh at all. She was just giving her opinion, like all the other judges, she only gets one vote on the panel, and Brandon got enough to get through to top 20.
I am overall disappointed with how Vegas week went. First Natalie Reid should have been able to dance for her life just like everyone else. Especially since Gabi Rojas got not one warning but 2 warnings to pick it up. Then when she should have been cut because all the judges said she was the biggest disappointment she got a chance to dance for her life and they said they wouldn’t judge her on just her solo alone and would take the other dances into account. They did the complete opposite and just took her solo into account saying it reminded them of what she had to offer. Which I didn’t even think it was that great compared to the other solos we have seen this season already. Just because she was unique and that’s why they kept her. Natalie was unique too and she did great in all the other styles. In fact she was the example to all the other dancers in the practice round. I know she didn’t do it as well as she did with Brandon as her partner, but at least she remembered all her steps unlike Gabi. I was so disappointed that both the Kasprzak brothers didn’t get through. They were both great and the judges loved them both. Nigel said there was not enough room for 2 Broadway/burlesque dancers in the top 20. I think that is completely unfair for them to base it on that since 1. they were both good at the other styles, especially the older brother and 2. they have several dancers that specialize in contemporary. I think they could have spared one of the several contemporary dancers for both the brothers.
I totally disagree with Meagan Q. Caitlin is one of the strongest and most original dancers of the group. I love to watch her dance. She is the epitome of grace and strength.
I was really upset (and annoyed!) that they cut Natalie as well. I think she was extremely talented and seemed like a wonderful girl. Guess it’s their loss…but it’s too bad that we can’t enjoy her dancing a bit more. She probably would have won the whole thing!
I LOVE PHILIP!!!
HE IS AMAZING!!!
HE IS GOING TO BLOW EVERYONE AWAY!!!
Where is Natalie????!
I agree with Michelle and several others - someone needs to put a muzzle on Mia! I used to admire her choreography, but her offensive attitude toward certain contestants is really giving me a bad feeling toward all that she does. I think all the judges need to steer clear of a “God complex.” They are all getting pretty pompous and patronizing. But Mia is on a whole other scale of being rude, judgmental and ridiculous - how arrogant to pass judgment on someone’s personality just by watching them dance for a few minutes! Give me a break! And good for Mary for telling her to shut up!
as much as I have enjoyed SYTYCD, I don’t think I will look at it in the same way after Natalie was treated the way she was - and I do believe that it had a lot to do with Mia and her criticisms, which just didn’t make sense given the strong performance Natalie gave on the contemporary piece.
I think if Tony Bellisimo and Randi Evans Pair up if they keep up the good work the Hightower level definition might come to them as if to throw Cat off the wall the Big Ding Dong which is August 20th 2009
Nick T - you are right on the money: Tyce acted like a total dink when he was in the judges seat during auditions! I could do with out him for sure!
I am kind of annoyed with the judges this year. I think there is a HUGE difference between giving constructive criticism and just tearing someone down. Good for Brandon sticking up for himself when they chose him for the top 20. He is a great dancer and Mia talks about his attitude or arrogance. Ummm?!?!?! Look in the mirror. You can be hard on someone in training and not rip away their confidence. I love the show because it has brought dance out in the public eye on such a high scale. But even Simon Cowell (love him) is honest and can be rude but when he is he acknowledges it and apologizes on air. Mia, I don’t care how many awards you have one. Some of your choreography I love and some is garbage. Thanks.
Oh, one more thing. Natalie Reid is amazing. She wasn’t even given the chance to dance for her life or redo the piece. Oh well. The show must go on. I am so not a Mia fan anymore. Used to love her now I just think she is way too big for her britches. I hear that happens when you let things go to your head.
What happened with Natalie?! You missed out on a good storyline by letting her go. When are we going to find out the REAL reason she was let go? And if you can bring her back for a solo during the season like you did with some others who were cut — you should DO IT! Regardless, it was very disappointing to many of your loyal fans that you did not put her through.
I think Jonathan is amazing!! Although we haven’t seen much yet, I believe you all will fall in love with him…
Go Jonathan!!
I love them all except Brandon.
I think he has that vibe that Danny gave off in season 3 where he looked very arrogant but he’s not and showed it all in dance.
hope he’s like that too…
Except for Brandon, Jason, Pono and Vitolio — I have no interest in the top 20 dancers. It’s so disappointing. The only girl that stands out is Asuka. And why are most of the girls contemporary dancers — how boring!!!!! I have a bad feeling — this season will bomb. The last good season was 2007 with Danny, Lacey, Lauren and Neil. Everyone rocked that season. I hope Wade Robeson and Snakes choreographs something. I’m tired of Mia and her ego (although I respect) — thank God for Sonya. AAAAh!!!
I also agree that Tyce was a horrible judge, the way he treated the contestants. His demeaning comments were really off-putting and they made him look like a real jerk. I don’t recall him being that way in the past - is he getting a big head from the exposure brought to him by the show? Looks like it.
Website guys, thanks for putting up pics of the contestants with their short profiles. Are wallpapers coming soon?
Everyone needs to watch out for Jeanine Mason. The girl is going to take it all. Trust me!!! They barely showed her, but I think its b/c they want her to pop out this week and surprise everyone!!!
VOTE FOR HER!!!
I am upset that Natalie was not put through. They let a lot of other dancers dance for there life that were not as good as she was. That was a big mistake on there part.
I am excited for the new season this year! But there were shocking cuts such as Natalie. Everyone seems to have not liked Gabi but i saw her as a Good dancer.( but she couldn’t do the choreography). And i hope the 17 year old and Alex Wong come back they were great.
I love Mia’s choreography! However, when it comes to critiquing the dancers, she can be mean spirited and resorts to personal attacks which makes me question her judgment because of it. She had it out for Kerrington last season; she’s really out for Brandon this year. So if we like him, we’ll just have to keep voting for him. Just hope he’s able to keep his spirit up in spite of her venom.
TONY BELLISSIMO IS AWESOME. Period.
Tony is sooo cute. I can’t wait for the show to start!
as a response to–Donna Barkley:
i dont think race had to do with any decisions… if u can dance, u can dance.
im excited for this years top 20
I also can’t believe what happened to Natalie, she’s been perfect since the beginning, the Jazz routine was perfect when she was singled out by Sonia, she did not do as well in front of the judges but that was not enough, in my opinion, to kick her out, that’s what they did, they kicked her out, no second chance…..
The other Kasprzak brother should’ve been in the top 20, he was great ( I don’t get the silly excuse of the judges when they said they couldn’t have 2 Broadway style dancers,,,, I mean they have 11 contemporary dancers!!!!!!! and he was good at the other dances too… ), that Bellissimo should’ve been kicked out instead!
And I agree Asuka is very pretty and a good Latin dancer, but I def. thought the other girl was mmmmmuch better at the other styles of dance………
Oh well… I wish the top 20 good luck and I hope they’ll be as good or even better than last season’s top 20… I loved it last year!!!!
Owwww, lettin’ Natalie go was a terrible ideia, she’s was doing sooo good!
Also, I dont remember the name of that girl whos lost her dad just a little ago, she dances contemporary, has short black hair and used a big open shirt. She was sooo gorgeus and good, bad to not have her in the show.
sonya did her dance to
“great dj” by the ting tings
To the person who said that the show isn’t diverse enough:
True, the first season, a white guy won. HOWEVER, the runner up was a Filipina (Filipino female)! In the second season, the winner and runner up were white males, but in the top four was a FEMALE African American who is plus size (we haven’t seen a plus size dancer in the top 20 since her, unfortunately)! In the third season, not only were both the runner up and winner African Americans, but the winner was a FEMALE (I was so excited!!)! In season four, both the winner and runner up were African American males, and the female runner up was Asian!
And in each season you’ll find individuals representing a wide spectrum of ethnicities and nationalities. In the past there have been Pacific Islanders, Russians, Italians, Greeks, Filipinos, Hispanics, African Americans, and yes, Blended Caucasians. In this season we have Haiti and Russia represented, along with the Philippines, (I don’t know what Asuka’s ethnicity is, so I’m being vague here) Asian countries, and what looks to be Hispanic heritage, as well as Blended Caucasians.
Thus, I thoroughly disagree that the show isn’t diverse. If we were still in Season 2, then I might agree, but we’re not. We’re in Season 5 and have seen two African Americans win first place, one of each sex. This show is FAR more diverse than most shows out there, and I hope it stays that way and gets even more diverse (more Asians and Latin Americans!!)! ^_^ <3 Yay diversity!!
Go Evan and Phillip!
OMG!!!
GO TONYYYYY
Bad judgement.
OMG! I THINK THE BALD BROTHER SHOULD OF STAYED!!!
P.S MIA SUCKS!!
Natalie should be in the Top 20
WAIT!! There’s only one guy Ballroom Dancer this season??? What the heck? Max is the only Ballroom guy? What happened in Vegas? And Asuka is the only Ballroom girl?
Anyways I’m rooting for Max and Tony!!! They’ve got so much personality its sick!
Does any one know if there’s any way that ppl who dont live in the USA can vote for the contestants online?
I do think Natalie is a lovely dancer but not as fantastic as every one is making her seem. And hey, there’s a fall season.
I hoping to see Kelsea Taylor(she had the awesome weird audition), Nathan Trasoras(the 17 year old), Alex Wong, Ricky Sun(Asuka’s partner, he’s like 29 :/ times a ticking), Ryan Kasprzak, Ellias and Enoch Holloway, and Gabi Rojas.
I don’t really think Tony should be in the top 20. Pretty angry about it actually. and no, I’m a 16 year old girl and he isn’t as “hott” as everyone saying.
Asuka and Max aren’t the only ballroom dancers; There’s Janette and Jonathan.
I love Caitlin so much. She’s very pretty and brilliance. I’m waiting for her performance this week. Hoping she’s in this season top 4.
I watched all the auditions and Vegas week - but I’m not sure I remember a lot of these people! Clearly there are some standouts… poor Brandon from his Mia abuse… and Tony from the Nigel pics… I can’t wait to have them focus on the top 20 so I can pic favs!
Represent Hialeah!!! (Janette)
Represent Coral Reef!!! (Brandon)
Represent NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS!!! (Vitollo)
i love kayla!!! she is gonna rock the so you think you can dance stage!! already my favorite no doubt
OMG I LOVE LOVE LOVE <3 Philip, Janette, Brandon and ESPECIALLY Evan!!! They ROCK! But I hate tht Mia Michaels picks on Brandon! UGH. I’ve been watching EVERY EPISODE!!! And Nathalie shouldn’t have been cut!!
ok mia needs to fix her attitude. i was very disappointed with her during the auditions and what she said to brandon was horrible. he’s not my favorite either, but i just can’t belive she said that. he is a beautiful dancer (good luck, brandon). i’m not very happy with this season’s top 20. i think natalie should have been in the top 20. my favorites so far are phillip, evan, paris, kupono (love his name), caitlyn, and kayla. Good luck everyone!
For those of you who consider Mia’s comments cruel, I can only say that she is mild compared to what most professional dancers face. Mia is passionate, and she requires a kind of emotional honesty from her dancers that, when they achieve it, leaves us all speechless. It takes what she says to bring some dancers to that place. (Remember the Park Bench meltdown? And the result?) Reaching for a raw emotional state is all part of the job, for both dancer and choreographer.
Congrats to the top 20. You all worked hard and deserver to be there. Good luck on the show. As far as how the top 20 was chosen, I didn’t like the way Mia acted at all. I think that was very unprofessional of her. If you don’t like the way someone dances and thinks that should improve, then give them some advice. Don’t bring them down. That will cause someone to lose confidence in themselves.
I think that its stupid for some one to to be dissapionted in the show just because there are only the africian-amarican dancers. This show is about finding the best dancer not making sure the races on the show are balanced.
yayyy
I love the top 20 ; especially Brandon & Kaila & Randi & Jannette & TONI
Except why did Nattaley go ?????? : (
ITS ON !!!
I saw every audition & can’t wait for the show to startt !!!!!!! : )
NATALIE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ELIMINATED! THAT WAS A VERY BIG MISTAKE! ALSO THERE WERE A LOT OF OTHER CONTESTANTS THAT DESERVE TO GO THROUGH TO THE TOP 20 I WAS VERY SHOCKED THIS YEAR!
No Natalie and no Alex. Man that sucks. WHAT WERE THE JUDGES THINKING ELIMINATING NATALIE?!?!?!?!?!?! D:<
WHYD THEY ELIMANATE BIANCA!!!
:(
:(
AND NATALIE!!! :(:(:(:(:(:(
my favorites are asuka, phillip and jason. :]
why is there only one hip hop dancer, though?! and so many contemporary!!
Tony! South Carolina is with you. Dance your heart out!!!!!!!!!
I’m upset that alot of the people on here are so revolving around the idea of diversity. We are all supposed to be treated equally so if you come into an audition with amazing dancers, you shouldn’t expect to get it just because of your ethnicity. What bothers me the most is when there is a lack of a certain race and then everyone blows up saying the judges are racist. i’m sorry if no one from that race did not live up to the standards of the judges, but in no way shape or form was it ever implied that the judges are racist. There should never be a race quota a show should have to meet.
Mia is a brilliant coreographer, and for people to say she was rude is stupid. ITS AN AUDITION!!! Not everyone is going to be nice, everyone has an opinion. True, I think she should not have used as many curse words, but in show business producers are going to treat you just like they would anyone else. you didn’t see Brandon talking crap about the way she talked to him, because he knows thats how show business runs. I believe he was very modest in his response to her and Lil’ C’s comments, and that is the way everyone should handle a situation like that.
Yes, I am upset Natalie got cut. I just didn’t agree with the judges on letting her go. I think she brought a lot to the table and many viewers along with it. for you people saying it’s because it’s a TV show and its also about personalities, look how many people are upset with her leaving. If they cut her because they thought she couldn’t get more viewers for the show that’s wrong, she could have brought many viewers.
I do though respect the judges opinions in all things they do, they are the professionals and get paid. This show shows what true show business is and if you don’t agree with what a judge said or did, then you obviously aren’t cut out for show business, your shoulders aren’t broad enough.
That is all.
:]]]]
I’m pretty upset with this years top 20…there are SO many contemporary dancers on the show. I wish there was more diversity.
Watch out for JON JON. That dude is gonna rip it. One dancer that makes me smile. Congrats to Jonathan and the other top twenty contestants. Your bodies are your tools paint empty space with your souls, Dance yo dance.
Kinney BEST TO YOU! You are amazing! McDonogh loves you!
I wish everyone a great experience.
Karla is the GREATEST….
Go karlaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Natalie should be in the top 20!!! Bring her back!!! Ok, so she was off but she nailed it for Sonja! And she had nailed everything else! Why did all the other so-so dancers get a second chance and she was just abruptly dismissed?
yay they finally gonna start showin the dancers all dance s everyone watch out for jonathan! i luv him hes like a big bro to me and hes an awesome dancer!
hes my cousin though but my friends are in LOVE with him!XD anyway you’ll see why he’s such and amazing dancer but other than that i think tony is also a very good dancer so yea if jonathan gets cut then my vote goes to tony
I am still upset at how Natalie was cut. She did really good, but since they had such high expectations, they decided to just cut her and not give her the second chance, dance for your life, as they did with others!
NATALIE SHOULD HAVE MADE IT TO THE TOP 20!!! I hope she to see her again next year and I pray she makes it through like she should have this season.
I just did a search for the word “Natalie” and it seems like there are a ton of people who have posted their disappointment that Natalie didn’t make it through or at least get the chance to dance for her life. I love, “So you can think you can Dance”, I’m very Disappointed. Do like American Idol did and change it to the Top 21 and bring Natalie Back!!!
I just watched last week’s shows and someone should teach Mia how to give constructive critique to the contestants. If you are a “teacher” you want your students to learn not to be traumatized by someone who is very good at what she does but is just that, a TEACHER. Maybe she should look the meaning in a dictionary.
Soo many people that already have amazing dance careers, and are proven great dancers. The guy from “high school musical” and others beyond established. I hope Philip wins, or someone else who doesn’t already have a career in the bag.
Overall there are way too many contemporary… I agree.. but that is what stood out in solos. I’m afraid the personality isn’t going to be there like it was last year with twitchington, and the chelseas and others.
I love this program. The talent is unlimited but Mary’s yelling all the time is enough for me to change the station. Must she yell everything she is saying? Please, find a way to get her to speak in a more normal volume.
All of the dancers were excellent tonight, but I thought that the Slumdog Millionaire number with Caitlin and Jason was amazing! Go Caitlin!
i think TONY BELLISSIMO deserves to win this!
So thrilled to have Wade Robson back to choreograph this year. Loved that routine. The season is off to another great start. Good luck to all of these energetic and creative young people. May your dreams come true!
KAYLA FOR THE WINNNNN!!! and i hope the wallpapers will be up soon!!!
Everyone was so good last night. I can’t imagine who they are going to send home. And I Mary’s screaming makes me laugh, so does Tony’s dancing (not in the good way).
http://letstalksytycd.blogspot.com/
Wow…what a start…wish we could keep all for a few weeks to get to know them better…love everyone…but Rob routine blew me away….and just think this is the first night…What a season this will be …and these dancers are going to challenge the choreographers…..AGAIN KEEP THEM ALL FOR A FEW WEEKS…
Oh I will miss Natalie and Eric…please tryout again..we loved you…Mia…please be more constructive..you are not to judge what others have told you..You have always been so professional…Even Tyce came across cruel this year…I think there could have been better editing at what you showed us.. I hope Shane Sparks will choreoghaphy a number..Again …thanks love everyone last night. Rob..I always love your strange but captivating routines..Where is his emmy..I vote for him
[...] caught the Vegas auditions last week for So You Think You Can Dance (and the results the next day). The judges can be so brutally honest sometimes. They possess a level of blunt truthfulness. [...]
This season started out with a bang and I am so excited to see what is to become. Everyone stepped up there game last night and left me screaming in my living room with Mary.
Breath taking
The dancers and Choreography are top-notch. It is the best thing on TV.
i loooovveee the top twenty especially jeanine nd kupono… just incase u didnt no i danced with jeanine wen i was younger until i moved to virginia soo jeanine its gabby delima hope u remember me
I love the show but I can’t take Mary’s screaming anymore. Its too much….enough already. The last thing I want to do is come home & have to listen to her screaming & screeching. It takes so much of the enjoyment away. Many others I watch with want to turn the TV off when she starts screaming. Its a shame b/c we really love the show. Mary…please! Enough already!!!!
OMG THE FIRST GROUP KILLED IT AND THE CRASH TEST DUMBYS WERE SO FLIPPING AWESOME UNIQUE AND KOOL!!!!
pls post my msg
first off, let me say i love this show! and i have watched it since the first season. i have always loved dance and i think “so you think you can dance” is a wonderful showcase for the great young dancers out there. so, you can imagine my disappointment when it dawned on me that there was not a single african-american woman who made top 20! i even got my mom hooked on the show and she also noticed right away last week that no black young ladies made it through…it struck us both as very odd. anyway, i hope that this season will be a good one and that all dancers are given an equal opportunity to shine and are fairly judged (i.e. i am thinking of asuka and vitoli) .
Who got kicked off? We are having bad weather in Austin and I couldn’t watch but the first 15 minutes
i hope the producers invite Quest Crew from ABDC!!!! Former dancers from SYTYCD are representing!!!!!!
OMG - I love, love, LOVE Jonathan Platero!!! How freakin’ sexy was that cha cha??? I can’t believe they were in the bottom three this week! I wish they had gotten more air time during the auditions.
HEY PRODUCERS! SHOW MORE CLIPS OF JON!!!!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEE TONY,PHILLIP,PARIS,KAYLA,JENNETTE,JONATHAN, AND NOT CAT DEELY SHE NEEDS 2 BACK OFF TONY…….(she is a flirt) no offense cat ur still pretty and freakishly tall go be a model or something…………………………………………………………………………:) GO TONY PHILLIP PARIS JON KAYLA AND JENNETTE!!!!!!!!! <333333333
Poor decision judges! PARIS should have STAYED!!!! She is a far superior dancer to Asuka and has a better personality to boot! Nigel, you stated it yourself - it is tough when you only have Latin Ballroom… uh, then she is NOT an all around dancer and should have been cut! Tut- tut… Disappointing.
In addition, Asuka will never win. How can she be America’s FAVORITE dancer with her stuck on herself attitude?!
I am sorry Paris. You should still be in there!!!
Sorry Asuka. That was unnecessary and unfair. That is how your personality came across to me on the Tele. I do not know what you are really like… Good luck.

I really like the top 20 , it seems like its gonnaa be a good seasonn (Y)
&& Paris shouldnt have leftt ! that was a mistakkee , she wont winn anywaysz .
&& does anyonee else thinkk Jonathan Platero is totallyy HOT !
<3
he’s the hottest guy in the competitionn
WOO ! GO JONATHAN ! <3
I’m glad Nigel chose to retain Karla. I thought that chacha number was really hot. Karla’s moves were very good to look at and attractive. I’d like to see her do other genres. Her jazz and modern dance background should help her do well.
It would be nice to leave race out of the conversation, but if we must “go there”, I was a little disappointed that it is not as diverse as it has been in the past. Yes, I agree that if you can dance you should have a shot. For the record, there were a lot of African American females that danced very well.
I guess only the judges know why none of these very talented young ladies were not chosen.
Perhaps next year it will be more balanced. I will continue to watch.

Love this seasons top 20!!!!!
LOve the judges especially Mary!
Go KAYLA JANINE JANETTE BRANDON EVAN
dont know about you guys but all I know is that phillp is so
H O T & C U T E
OMG!!! super de duper ecited for this season!! so sad to see max go home thou.. cant wait to see them all in concert! ;]
I think they should make next week all about Michael Jackson. No kick - offs. Just dance Michael. Nice Tribute.
I’m with Michelle and Mia’s lame excuse tonight for her previous behavior is just BS. She is obviously incompetent as a judge. I don’t appreciate her as a choreographer either. As Michelle said, I don’t care about her awards or her fame. I can’t stand the sight or sound of her. Surely you can do better.
Hey does any one know the name of the song that they dance too in vegas call backs during the ballroom session? a female sings it but i cant find the title anywhere????!!!!?????
Melissa and Ade are my favorite! Their dances have been nothing but beautiful to watch and flawless. I hope they win!!
Phillip and Jeanine ROCK!!!!!!!! or should i say hip-hop? love em!
Why is Evan in the top ten he sucks big time..
Been a fan for all 5 seasons and just now decided to comment. Shame on me.
Melissa Michaels is a GODDESS! What ever she touches is gold. Every routine she choreographs touches the heart, the soul and the mind of every viewer. Thank you Melissa.
i think it was sweet that nigel lythgoe talkes to the producers to let caitlin and phillip to go on tour even though there is only suppose to be 10 now theres 12
Really sad to see Phillip Chbeeb leave the show tonight, really think he should have been in the top 10 as he was a diamond in the rough and it was so exciting to see him come alive. Consolation is that he will join the tour later this summer and hopefully will continue to evolve as a dancer.
Congratulations, Phillip on being such a wonderful role model, great speaker and passionate in your support.
Cheers,
Dean - Whistler, Canada
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I am a little disappointed in the show this season. The choreography has been boring and predictable. I am getting sick of Mia Michael’s holier than thou attitude just because she won some award. I enjoy her choreography, but not her attitude. I am also disappointed in the new choreographers as I expected something better from them. And where is all the hard hitting hip hop that I have grown to love? I’m thinking I will stop watching this and start watching Shane Sparks’ show on MTV “America’s Favorite Dance Crew”. Good luck to all the dancers, don’t know how many people will continue watching this season.
I’m so disappointed to hear that the show didn’t receive the permission from Sony to do the Micheal Jackson tribute. I love the show and wish to hear some music from my favorite band on here…5Yze. They are awesome!
What are the producers of SYTHCD thinking? Why do so many accolades go to the choreographers this season, esp. when some choreograph impossibly difficult routines for previously non-professionals to perform (like last night’s passe doble - excuse any gross misspelling)?
All a viewer is left to think is that the producers only wish to advance the names and reputations of the choreographers. Why, then, not call the show “So You Think You Can Choreograph”?
For example, the lovely couple who performed the other night (by attempting to perform a passe doble - excuse any bad spelling - that was way over their heads) were left holding the bag while the choreographers of their routine received accolades and were touted and applauded as designing a terrific dance for the dancers to perform! I would LOVE to see the woman who choreographed the dance last but 1 minute into her own routine. Please . . .
It is a shame that the lovely somewhat novice dancers on the show who try with everything they have to apply the routines they are given, sometimes just can’t reach the level of their choreoographer’s dreams. The final insult is that they are voted off the show when they fail to “perform”. And the BIG final insult is when the judges praise the choreographers and leave the dancers behind to eat dust! Unbelievable. The poor kids suffer the consequences, not only for their own actions, but for the actions of the choreographers as well. Again, unbelievable.
I’m growing weary of the choreographer “wanna-be’s’ getting so much credit and attention from the judges on this show, accolades that really belong to the performers. After all, even a novice knows that it is only through the efforts of the performers that the judges can see the merit in the choreography.
Hope this show cleans up its act, gets back on track to focus its “love” on the dancers ahead of anyone else or it is going to loose the interest of those of us who really are looking to support true, newly found dance talent. I’ve already got my finger on the “next” button.
Still hoping that the Michael Jackson tribute is a possibility. The Janet Jackson number was brilliant! The costuming was fantastic, especially the red flowing kimonos.
Keep Kupono on to costume and dance! I can’t believe he made a back support device blue collar chic! The show leaves DWTS in the dust when it comes to makeup and costuming and should highlight that more.
I don’t understand Nigel’s comment on Kayla’s hair hiding her face. Her addiction-themed number with Kupono was the most emotionally intense in the season so far. I saw flashes of pain and desperation. She was totally committed!
Travis’ debut as a choreographer was mind-blowing. Such natural sensuality and emotional connection that is so powerful in its plain honesty. MORE!!
Delightfully surprised to see Phillip become such a connected dancer both to his audition partner and Jeanine. Awesome!
I love the montages, but I’d love to see an hour or so of the award-winning numbers throughout the series re-aired in their ENTIRETY. How about putting together a behind-the-scenes and award-winning dances show?
As a walker in the Susan G Koman Breast Cancer 3-Day Tampa Bay, I was MOVED TO TEARS. As were millions I’m sure. Last year, one week before the event, one of my teammates on the walk lost his sister to breast cancer. My thoughts were with him and her the entire time of the dance. Thank you! So Much!
[...] things/situations. Call it growth or connecting, I don’t know, but this past episode of So You Think You Can Dance moved me to [...]
Brandon danced his bottom off tonight. That solo performance was wicked sick! Even if you do not like him personally, there is no way you could HONESTLY deny the power of that performance. Can someone say Ailey???
On another note, I am not a fan of Evan. I think he has a charming personality but, when it comes to technique, he’s just not up to par. There is some MAJOR talent this season. Personally, I think he should have been sent home as opposed to a couple of others who were sent home too soon (i.e. Janette)
OMG!! I can’t believe this season it’s amazing. But I was really sad when Asuka left.
xoxo
I have been dancing my whole life so this show is amazing to me, this season is awesome, I am very disappointed with america for letting jeanette get eliminated she was not only a great personality but had the versatility that i remember sabra having. Also, as much as a feel like mia micheals is a gift to dance and anyone that enjoys watching it, I am so glad that no one listened to her when it came to brandon. Is there anything he can’t do? I wish the producers of this show would put the seasons to dvd, or even just sell the performances as music videos or something. Not just that but they should sell the sound tracks the music has been crazy good this year, and i can’t find it on any site!!!!
I’m disappointed with the way Evan was treated last night. All season the judges were building for last night’s crescendo of attacks against the guy. He may not be the most versatile dancer, but he is amazing at several styles, including last night’s jive. What is wrong with being sweet and charming? Are all the girls supposed to be sex pots and all the boys nasty jerks to prove they have talent?
yeahhh jeanine wonnn
I think Brandon was robbed tonight. He never made a wrong move and had praise after praise heaped on him only to be shunned at the end. I’m completely flabbergasted!
I hope next year it won’t be a “popularity” contest where the voting can be swayed by teenage girls but the votes will be from choreographers/dancers themselves.
ooohhhh..
I can’t believe this season it’s amazing.
Jeanine…I saw her coming when no one else did…….She has amazing technic….and she is strong…..my favorite …..so glad she won……Brandon was the no.one boy but evan to me was just as good…..Matter of fact ,I think evan has more flexability in his movements……The judges say what they say because they see things we don’t……..I think jeanine was flawless the whole way through………………..
Very disappointing. I thought Brandon was robbed. He was a versatile flawless dancer. He was able to master any genre he was asked to perform.
I congratulate Jeanine and I take no glory away from her accomplishment but I was rooting for Brandon. Job well done to all.
Very nice site! is it yours too
Jeanine is a solid dancer but she was not breath taking or moving. Brandon was flawless every time he step on the stage from solos to couples. Standing ovation after standing ovation; judges even crying from his performance. She is a good dancer but Brandon is in another league. I feel sorry for her because she knows that she isn’t as good as Brandon. She will have to live with that. But, congrats Jeanine.
Love the site it was exactly what i was looking for! Im happy Jeanine won… she was one of my favorites! I definatly think it was a great finally definatly a memberable one!!!
I just finished re-watching my TIVO copy of the 2009 Season. I have a much better perspective now that I’m not caught up in the “contestant” countdown.
Based upon all performances, there is no doubt that Janette Marara was the best dancer of the season. It is easy to see again the dismay and disappointment of Nigel, Mary, and Mia when she was eliminated by the American voters. Even though she didn’t get the recognition she deserved, I think with a little luck, she’ll achieve stardom at some level due to her overall performance skills, that obviously overshadow the competition. I hope she’s under contract for the tour so I’ll be able to see her in person. She is dynamite. Much of her early stellar performances were closely tied to her partnering with Brandon, another standout.
Maybe having two contestants from Miami was just too much for voters to deal with. Jeanine Mason finished strong and put in quite a few outstanding performances. When teamed with Phillip, who’s somewhat weak at partnering, she had to struggle to shine. With Brandon, Jason, and Ade, her talents became more apparent, and she became the “new” star, out-shining others as her earlier, weaker performances were forgiven and forgotten. As said, “its not where you start, it’s where you finish.” Without Janette in the way, all of Miami could support Jeanine. Alas, for Kayla, my early favorite, she began to weaken in the stretch and her worry about losing-out seemed to affect her dance. Melissa’s ballet backstory made her unique fusion style compelling to watch. And the “cancer dance” was the dance of the season as it still brings tears to my eyes. It will win an Emmy.
Re-watching the males, with different partners, brought out a different outcome. I concede no one can touch Brandon as a solo male performer and in numbers where animation, slow-step, and height are not factors, he is the best. He was lucky to draw draw dances not requiring much of these. His timing, strength, footwork, and posture, especially in quick paced dances, made it work for him and he stood out. Yet, will all attributes combined, I’ve concluded that Jason came out the overall best. Again, Brandon was teamed with great partners as well. What if he’d been initially teamed with Randi. Luckily, she was with Evan, her equal, and hopefully her partner on the tour.
On Evan, I almost had more viewer shock as I saw him nearing the finish line. Losing Janette was one thing, but America believing he was the top dancer… well, it didn’t happen. Broadway IS entertainment and his popularity reflects much of what America likes about dancers. Agreeing with Ellen DeGeneres and Mia Michaels, he has a great face and is very animated with it, almost as much as Janette.
I have a number of suggestions about improvements that could be made, but its a long way to next season, and the top 12 are resting a little and preparing for the tour. One strong suggestion is to spread the wealth around. A quarter of a million to one person, being that the results aren’t necessarily correct and highly subjective, isn’t fair. SYTYCD should give cash prizes for different levels of success. Based on the interminable advertising, I think its affordable.
Lastly, thank you Janette for not returning to your bank job.

Melissa Michaels is a GODDESS! What ever she touches is gold. Every routine she choreographs touches the heart, the soul and the mind of every viewer. Thank you Melissa SANDEEP RAI FROM INDIA……
guys this show is pro
Hey,
I was just surfing the web and I came across this page. I really liked the info, keep up the good work.
Peace
Wassup?? I just saw the promo for the road tour of Season 5 SYTYCD troupe. I thought we were going to get Caitlin and Phillip added as a bonus… at least that’s what Nigel told them, and the viewing audience. Perhaps they’re the understudies and don’t getting billing. I do hope they’re along, especially to see Phillip doing his breaks and weaves.
best season ever!
I just saw the Season 5 Live in Austin. Total entertainment. The dancers EmCeed themselves with Nigel and Cat recordings synchronized with the performances. Most top routines from last “season”. Each dancer gave their all in each number, no signs of road-weariness. Absolute dedication to perform as good or better than during competition. The packed house gave several standing O’s.
Nice to see Catlin and Phillip appearing as “guests”… and a smart move to include them. Phillip’s lock and pop solo got the biggest response and Catlin with Jason dancing Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire was a real crowd pleaser.
Kayla dances with the most emotion in contemporary numbers, Janette with the most energy (disco and Latin), and Brandon with the best form (what a solo). Melissa and Jeanine seemed to have the most fun. Randi was the most personable EmCee and seems to have the edge on acting ability. Evan did great Broadway style, Ade kept the gentle-giant thing going, Jason kept his flirtations going, and Kupono, well, he does have sweet personality.
Gotta say so long and good luck to Season 5, ’cause it’s on to Season 6.

you are upppppp i love you guys you are owesom
