Max and Ashley’s DANCE Journey, So You Think You Can Dance.

Ashley & Max with Cat Deeley
Max (Maksim) Kapitanikkov was eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance during the Top 18 week, which was surprising to many viewers. Just the week before, Max was on the Hot Tamale Train, and this week he performed a pop jazz routine that the judges liked. On a press call the morning after Max’s elimination, he said that he wasn’t too surprised about the elimination. He also doesn’t have any regrets, stating, “Looking back, I think I did the best that I could.” Max is at peace with the results and said he predicted it because he thinks Jason and Kupono are great dancers.
On Wednesday’s show, Max’s partner, Kayla, revealed that Max is the “house dad” who cooks for his roommates. Max isn’t worried that someone will assume the role as house dad in his absence.
Max always remained composed while on stage. He says he stays in a focused zone while he’s up there. Max’s trick is to “visualize the routine before you’re going to do it, and just go for it.”
Growing up in Moscow until age 13, Max used to go with his mom to the dance school where she used to teach. This early exposure gave him a great background in dance.
It’s often tricky for ballroom dancers to perform solos on So You Think You Can Dance, but Max said he doesn’t think he was at a disadvantage. Knowing he only had 30 seconds to dance for his life, Max chose to perform a jive routine because it is a style of dance that shows off a lot of aspects of dance and performance.
Max is thankful for his So You Think You Can Dance experience. He said he learned so much and hopes to not only take all of that with him, but build on it too.
Ashley Valerio made it on to the show after trying out four times. The judges saw her persistence and noticed an improvement in Ashley over the years. Just a few years ago, Ashley moved to the Hollywood area from Arizona to pursue her dance dreams. She has spent that time auditioning for SYTYCD and teaching dance.
Although Ashley was eliminated after two weeks on the show, she is in good spirits and said, “I think the show will open many doors, and I’m really excited about that.” During her last week on the show, Ashley performed a Shane Sparks’ hip hop routine with her partner, Kupono. After watching the dance on TV, Ashley believes that she and Kupono performed the best they could and she has no regrets about the performance. In addition, Ashley’s solo to fight for her spot in the competition was more of a performance that showed off her personality than her dance moves. Ashley stands by her solo choreography and said, “I just really wanted to be me, and that’s what I do and I loved it. It was fun.”
Now that Ashley and Max have been eliminated, their partners, Kupono and Kayla, are a couple. Ashley said she thinks “Kayla and Kupono are going to be phenomenal together.” She said that Kupono is a great person and partner, and that she thinks he’ll bring out the best in Kayla.
Ashley mentioned that she’ll come out of this experience as a better dancer, but after these past few weeks, it’s the friendships she knows she’ll take away. She also got to accomplish some dreams while on the show by working with choreographers she has always admired. “Right now I feel like I’m on top of the world because I got to work with two of my favorite choreographers in the world, Wade Robson and Mia Michaels, and they both pushed me past my limits and I feel like a stronger person and a stronger dancer, and I’m excited to take on more things.”
The years of auditioning for Dance have paid off for Ashley. “This is what I’ve been working for…I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Here’s a video recap of their elimination week:

Just want to say I love the show, it’s fabulous!!! I love how the judges give constructive criticism with-out being hurtful (not like Simon in “American Idot”), how these judges handle it is smart, wise, noble and humble. The host, OMG!!! wonderful beautiful caring Cat, I also love, love, love… I love the honesty in both the judges and the host … we are all everyday people, that cares and feels, why hide it behind arrogance? I love these judges and host.
Finally and most importantly I love the dancers, there heart, there passion, theier dedication, there hunger… plus they are soooo good.
I just want to ask you one thing….. how can I buy all the seassons???? I want them, I want them all, for all time
I agree! On all that you said, but most of all about the seasons. I have never been one to buy TV show series (most TV just aren’t worth the money), but if I found SYTYCD in a store, I’d buy it in a heartbeat!!!
I thought I was the only one with that thought, Miriam! We record the shows, and I watch them again and again. And then I look for my favorite dances on youtube. Whatta nerd, huh?
I want to buy the DVD set as well. All of the seasons. I still watch dances from two years ago and it clogs up my DVR. Please let us know where we can buy the DVD set. I also would love to see a “where are they now” segment about past dancers. I would love to know how they are all doing. Last year near the finale they did a short recap. I think you could make an entire show on it or even a show of highlights from all of the seasons. Thanks for a great job on this show. I love it!
This year’s dancers are absolutely fabulous. These dancers know that ultimately someone will be sent home, until the end. They are all so good and trying so hard. It is the best year yet!
The one thing I have to say on the negative side, is I wish Mary Murphy would lower her voice. Everything she says is with this loud and shreiking voice that gets really annoying and old.
I have known Ashley since the first grade, and I know how hard she has worked to be on this show and I so disappointed that she has been cut. She has so much potential and personality.
i didn’t like max but i liked Ashley so that was half rediculous and half happy for me
and i also like Kayla and kupono they were so good with the dream dance.
JUST PLAIN AMAZING!!!
:] lol
oh and journey davis thats so cool you know ashley i repeat so cool.
Does the camera work on the group dances bug anyone else??? They cut in too close, and change camera angles every two or three seconds. Makes it TERRIBLY difficult to see and enjoy the entire dance and the overall movement of the of the choreography.
SYTYCD Director: Wider and slower moving camera angles, please! Let us see the dancing as if we’re in the audience, not a house fly buzzing randomly around the stage at lightning speed!!!
is this really the season of the most talented dancers? i have to disagree
I have watched the show since the first season and enjoyed seeing the dancers improve as well as the various styles. However this season has been very disappointing; primarily due to the wardrobe and choreography choices. Unfortunately it seems that SYTYCD has taken a page out of the “Dancing with the Stars” book and is selling half naked females gyrating on stage rather than showcasing their talent. If ratings are dropping and the last ditch effort is to compromise morals and talent for sex appeal then I will not support the show.
I wish, I wish, I wish the producers of So You Think You CAn Dance can read this email…. I hope they can do a tribute to Michael Jackson, a leyend, a pivotal force in music, fashion and American Pop Culture, an artist that in the genning transcendent color and age, we only saw a spectacular, gifted artist with tons of potential, and so it was… I imagine a beautiful contemporary number choreographer by Mia dance a strong yet soft number of being reborn with ‘Man in the Mirror’ or ‘You are Not Alone’. To begging the programs with “We Are The World” number, entering from both sides of the stage a great big chorus, and/or a great recreation of Thriller… maybe a Tabitha & Napolean number of ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, a Lil C version of ‘Dirty Diana’, maybe Mandy Moore feeling of ‘Childhood’, Jean Marc interpretation of ‘Gone to Soon’ and maybe you could mix Billy Jean and Smooth Criminal.
Thank you, thank you for everything
This weeks show I think what Nygel was trying to say to put the long story short about Randi and Evan it is the male female ploodle thing the Dance that Randi and evan were doing the male ploodle was sniffing the female ploodles but even though the male and female ploodle were dancing together.
OMG….Please…..Oh Please….MAKE the musicians actually play live! Lip syncing is sooooooooo Milli Vanilli! You’re dancers can’t wimp out…hold out the same standard for the music.
Other than that….your show rocks!

MIRIAM, I really love your idea of doing a tribute to Michael Jackson. It would be awesome!
The camera angles are driving me crazy!!!! I thought it was just me!! Karen you summed it up perfectly…I feel like a fly flipping all around the stage!! Very frustrating…In some cases, I don’t know if the dancers are not looking good or if its just the horrible flitter-flatter of the camera shots which makes them appear to look as though they are not dancing well. I have always loved watching this show, however this season is disappointing me. Anyone else out there feel as though all the judges were a bit OVERLY complimentary to Kapono??? Come on, really Mary…the hot tamale train for that? Not saying it wasn’t good but if they used another “Really” to stress how good he was I was going to turn off
my TV!!! Sorry….but this week missed the exciting punch of “Max WOW” Kayla didn’t shine this week and its because Kapono wasn’t the same “ROCK” of strength, dedication and skill as Max!
I reiterate, BIG MISTAKE to let Max go, he by far was one of the strongest and most interesting male dancers!!!! I hope he has a wonderful career and the judges were WRONG in this case!!!!!
The judges are supposed to save the best dancers from the bottom 3 when they end up there undeservedly. Kupono and Jason didn’t perform well in their partner routines. Max did, and on top of that did a great solo. He should not have been let go. He was one of the best dancers.
max leaving is a shame!!!!!!!!!
I have watched every episode of this show since it started almost for what I hear tonight to be 100 shows ago. I just want to know why bother with a dance for your life show when they don’t send the worse one home . Tonight they did that with Kupono and Vitolio they flat out said that Kupono’s dance wasn’t worthy of keeping them there and Vitolio actually danced for his life and they sent him home they also did that to Max he danced better than one of the others in his group also and they sent him home. If they are just going to send home whoever they want why bother with making them dance?
the worst costumes ever!!
Max should not have left. They just love Kupono and wanted to pair him with a different dancer to see if they could get him out of the bottom. He’s not that good and they only give him dances in his style. I’d like to see him try a hard ballroom like the jive or the quick step. Ever couple had to do at least one ballroom this week but not him.
GREAT SHOW! What was the brand of jeans was Randi wearing last night, Wed., July 8th? Does anyone know?
