Asuka & Jonathan Eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance

Host Cat Deeley Flanked by Asuka Kondoh & Jonathan Platero
Finalists Asuka Kondoh and Jonathan Platero were eliminated tonight from the competition. Kondoh, 25, is a Latin Ballroom dancer from Irvine, CA, and Platero, 21, is a Salsa dancer from New York, NY. This week featured special performances by Rock duo The Veronicas and Hip Hop dance team The Rage Boyz Crew.
The three couples who received the fewest votes after Wednesday’s performance show were: Asuka Kondoh and Vitolio Jeune; Karla Garcia and Jonathan Platero; and Caitlin Kinney and Jason Glover. After each of these six dancers performed solo routines, the judges eliminated Kondoh and Platero.
Next week, the competition continues on television’s most original dance show when the remaining 14 finalists (Kūpono Aweau, Brandon Bryant, Phillip Chbeeb, Randi Evans, Karla Garcia, Jason Glover, Vitolio Jeune, Evan Kasprzak, Caitlin Kinney, Janette Manrara, Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi, Kayla Radomski and Melissa Sandvig) compete as couples once again on a two-hour performance show Wednesday, July 1 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
The following night, pop sensation Kelly Clarkson will sing her new hit, “I Do Not Hook Up,” and professional dancers Desmond Richardson and Patricia Hachey will perform a Pas de Deux before the judges send two more dancers home on the live results show Thursday, July 2 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed).

NOOO WAY !!!! THEY ARE MY 2 FAVORITES !!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I have watched the show since the first season and enjoyed seeing the dancers improve as well as the various styles. However this season has been very disappointing; primarily due to the wardrobe and choreography choices. Unfortunately it seems that SYTYCD has taken a page out of the “Dancing with the Stars” book and is selling half naked females gyrating on stage rather than showcasing their talent. If ratings are dropping and the last ditch effort is to compromise morals and talent for sex appeal then I will not support the show.
I agree with “Kris”. I felt last night’s group dance was a little over the top. I hope they don’t resort to selling the show based on sex appeal.
NOOOO!!!! I loved Jonathon!!! He deserved to stay in the competition.
asuka looks way too much like katie. nobody wants to see repeats. on with the show!
I agree with you Kris…something is off about this season! The choreography is not as hot as it was last season. I am really not impressed with the top 20. I will keep watching…hopefully it will get better.
Dear Kris,
If you don’t want to watch, turn the channel. The vast majority of people don’t care about your prudishness, the ones that hardily agree with you, you can hang out in church together.
This show is about the only reality show on the air worth watching.
i have seen nothing wrong with wardrobe or choreography nor have i seen any huge differences in the two from other seasons. i think the show is great and it is wonderful to see dancers and choreographers getting so much support. you can’t dance in head to toe drapes, and i thought hip gyrations stopped being considered wicked post elvis circa 1958. i love the show and i think they are doing a great job.
As far as wardrobe go, it is part of the dance world. If people are so bitter about the show then don’t watch it. There is no compromise of morals and talent for sex appeal. It is dancing. And dancing is art. Its annoying when people who aren’t even knowledgable about dance try to trash aspects of the dance world.
Unfortunately, Asuka and Jonathan failed to bring it in the solos. I wasn’t surprised. Many of the amazing dancers keep growing. Both of them stopped growing or lost interest it seemed.
these are the results that should have happened!!! these two were the weakest of the bottom three couples!!!
also … they are not all half naked… sexy dance = sexy costume…. every thing has been fitting in my opinion and this is still season after season one of my all time favorite shows!!!!!!
I agree. I’ve been disappointed with the choreography and can’t help notice that half the time, Nigel comments on how the finalists look more often than how they dance. I don’t think they chose the 20 strongest dancers, there were several they sent home in Vegas that I thought were far more talented. I’m not ready to jump ship yet, but I’m standing on the railing.
Obviously that is not the case Kris, or these two would not have been eliminated!!! ::steamy::
I have watched this show since season 1 as well and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I however have to disagree with the statement above about this season being disappointing and that they’re selling have naked females, etc. I have enjoyed every routine so far this season and it’s only going to get better.
Amazing talent this season, I’m sorry to see Jonathan go, was not the right one to leave at this point. Big mistake. I also have watched the show from the beginning, an stress it’s the dancing and talent I look to enjoy, not the sexing up of the show. Please keep that in mind.
I love the styles and choreography on the show! I like the costumes and all that!! I was really sad to see Asuka go last night. She was one of my top three girls (I liked her, Randi, and Janine (sp?)). Oh well… I love this show so much, and I am thrilled that they are going go have a fall season! (They are, aren’t they??)
In response to an earlier post, the show isn’t doing anything different as far as the presentation of the women goes than it has done in any other season. Which instance of “half-naked females” stands out in your mind? And how is it that it’s no problem when the dudes shed their shirts whenever the crowd attention starts to ebb? This show has been showcasing sexy from the start. I still think Natalie and Musa have the hottest routine of any season ever and that was years ago. Her outfits then aren’t any different from what you are seeing this season. Honestly, the problem with this season is choreography. Plain and simple. These routines have been, for the most part, uninspiring and lacking in creativity. Perhaps the show could implement a bonus to the choreographers whose dancers avoid the bottom 3. They have been failing the dancers by not giving them routines that show off their personalities and talents. I think the format of the show is spot on and once the mentors start really clicking with the students we’re going to see some spectacular stuff.
Hmm, I agree with Kris. There were times on Wednesday’s episode that I was uncomfortable with wardrobe choices and choreography. I no longer watch Dancing With the Stars because of that. I hope it can revert back to the way it was. Thanks!
Aww I really like Jonathan. He was so cute and his gymnastics was sick!!!! And his dance with Karla on the top 18 show (the contempory one) was beautiful.
I liked Asuka but I think that there are other much more talented female dancers.
How can you say that the producers are going for sex appeal when they just voted of the sexiest dancer of the season. I agree that this season lacks the spark that last season had but I it’s simply because the dancers don’t seem as well rounded as previous seasons but it’s still early and for me it just takes one fantistic dance to have me replay the dance in my head every time I hear the song on the radio.
They are knocking off the ball room dancers. Max last week Asuka this week.
hm, I disagree, I’ve also watched since the first season and it’s seemed that whenever they do ballroom, that’s when the skimpy outfits come in (which would explain asuka’s dress – she is ballroom). I actually think a lot of the wardrobe choice are very tasteful, not just ballroom but hip hop, lyrical, everything. now if SYTYCD goes the way of dancing w/the stars and puts no-talent two-bit stars looking for their 15 mins… then that’s when I’m out
I did not enjoy Nigel’s eulogy to Michael Jackson at the beginning of the show. It was inappropriate and took up so much time that at the end of the show he was yelling at everyone to move it along. That was truly obnoxious! The show is about these talented young people, and Nigel was quite rude.
I really love this show. All the dancers are extremely talented, unlike some dancers in previous seasons who were only good at their own genre. I see no change in the type of costumes worn by the dancers this season. My only complaint about the show is all the camera movement during the group numbers. Please hold still and let us watch the dance. Excellent show, keep up the good work.
That’s funny that you mention that Kris, because compared to women’s costumes on the ballroom dance circuit, the females on SYTYCYD and Dancing with the Stars have quite tame outfits.
I don’t think ratings are dropping and I don’t think the costumes have changed much. I think the costumes are amazing, they may show skin but they are classy at the same time. Keep in mind how difficult it is to make a dancing costume that allows the dancer to move the way they are supposed to which is why most wear very little in auditions (spandex and sports bras!). Ade and Melissa did a “gyrating” heavy routine and it was one of my favorites of the night! I don’t condone over sexuality or sluttiness and I don’t think SYTYCD have crossed that line at all.
The right 2 went home last night, but it’s getting harder each week to see anyone go home because they’re all SO good!
LOVE YOU SYTYCD!!
The little episode with the Cat and that dance group was a little peculiar – especially since the kid wasn’t even very good. The bowing down was ludicrous. Please this is/was classy show do not ruin it and let it become a crass remake of MTV. Also, the outside groups you have all have one thing in common – no talent. Stick with the dancers. Thank you.
Nigel – thank you for taking time to give your regards
Kat – thank you for the beautiful fawcett outfit – it reminded me of her the entire night
Dancers – thank you for all your hard work – I am truly entertained and blessed and it is well worth my 3 hours a week for the inspritation
I agree!!! Why are they making all the girls look like hookers?! This is supposed to be a family show! I know a LOT of people who turned off Wednesday’s show because their children were watching and it was just inappropriate. This is seriously my favorite show on tv but i am really disappointed in it this year.
oh get real, Kris. those costumes are standard ballroom wear. just look it up and you would see. and plus the wardrobe has never really changed throughout the season so i don’t know why its standing out more to you this season.
i was never impressed by jonathan
Where can we go to download our favorite dance rutines… LOOOOOVVVVEEEE the “BUTT” dance…. and .. the “HUMMING BIRD” dance from 2 seasons ago. Would like to see them again!!!
THX…..
i still love the show its just this season really doesn’t excite me that much with some of the performances. but that doesn’t take away from their technique, because they are good technically. i guess im just looking for another performace, like when sabra danced to “sweet dreams” or the performance when neil and his female partner were playing good and evil.
agreed Kris. agreed Ashley. someone please tell me what cat deeley was wearing this night. i HAVE to have it
I have to agree with those who have noticed the “sexing up” of the show. My two girls love the dancing, but now I’m hesistant to let them watch because of the suggestive moves and the revealing costumes. It’s much sexual this season, and that’s sad.
i’m sad Jonathan left……Asuka looks 2 much like Katie……and most of my fave people got voted off……tear, tear!
Kids arent even supposed to watch this show, brandi, theyre not old enough to understand dance and actualy vote. So if u think its inappropriate for them, just dont let em watch.
Jonathan NEVER should have made the top 20. He only made it because he is cute. He is clearly not a well trained dancer…in any genre. He was completely holding Karla back!!!! I think Karla and Vitoleo will make a very strong pair.
I’m wondering what the point is of dancing for your life if the weakest performer is not going to be cut from the show?! Jonathan shouldn’t have been the one to leave. I agree with Sam regarding the reply at 12:15pm today. Though, I also agree with Brandi in that I thought Fox was family oriented. If my daughter shares the same love for dance, I’m concerned with the sexual content movement. What will our children be doing on stage 20 yrs from now (if computers haven’t taken over)? I know my daughter’s father would not want his little girl dancing like that in front of millions of people let alone anyone. Great dancers and performances do not have to be so sexual in nature to be entertaining. We plan to support our daughter in the path she chooses and would feel honored if she were to make it to such a level of success, but come on!!
I was soooo happy to see Asuka go and am surprised she made it as far as she did. Sure she can latin dance but that’s all. And…her smug smile drove me crazy.
Honestly, I would have rather had Vitolo gone, too. The only thing keeping him on is his background story – not his dancing.
The camera angles are driving me crazy!!!! I thought it was just me!! I feel like a fly flipping all around the stage!! Very frustrating…In some cases, I don’t know if the dancers are not looking good or if its just the horrible flitter-flatter of the camera shots which makes them appear to look as though they are not dancing well. I have always loved watching this show, however this season is disappointing me. As far as the sexiness in this season…well, some of these dancers have strong chemistry with one another and that really affects how the dance is preceived. The costumes are a part of the dance world and chosen to coincide with the story the dancers are expressing. Having said all that, I do feel that the opening dance for the Thursday show was a bit more sensual than other seasons….hoping that doesn’t become a habit…By the way, anyone else out there feel as though all the judges were a bit OVERLY complimentary to Kapono??? Come on, really Mary…the hot tamale train for that? Not saying it wasn’t good but if they used another “Really” to stress how good he was I was going to turn off my TV. Sorry….but this week missed the exciting punch of “Max WOW” Kayla didn’t shine this week and its because Kapono wasn’t the same “ROCK” of strength, dedication and skill as Max!
I also agree with Kris. We all know sex sells, and it seams that this show is resorting to it more this year. The opening number on Thursday was a little too much for the younger audience, which is most likely the demographic that watches the show. I’m not as big of a fan as I used to be even though the talent is excellent! There r so many great choreographers, I think it’s time to mix it up a bit and bring in some fresh styles and ideas! Or better yet bring back some of the alumni from seasons past and have them choreograph for the newbies! That would b interesting.
I agree with Brownie – I want to watch the dancers… not flip thru camera angles that show closeups. It really makes it hard to watch. I want to see the beautiful lines and overall movement – not every facial expression.
I find it hard to ‘connect’ with any of the dancers this season. Last year I really found myself interested in the performers. This season there just doesn’t seem to be the same personalities. I watch the show for the dance, not because I care about any of the dancers stories.
I am sad to see Jonathan leave. He and his partner were sabotaged by the mess of a routine that was created for them. When oh when are the judges going to stop being such obsequious little sycophants when it comes to choreographers who just cannot bring their A game to the competition.

What is up with the camera angles during these group dances this season?!? You cannot see the dance!
I think SYTYCD should pay tribute to Michael Jackson and do an entire show with MJ songs and choreography added into the show. What an amazing show that would be.
I DID NOT LIKE HER. SHE WAS TOO FULL OF HERSELF AND NOT A GOOD DANCER
Aww, I liked Asuka! I didn’t want her to go. I think Kayla should have been eliminated instead. She was weaker in her last routine. And I agree with Kelly. They should pay tribute to Micheal Jackson. That would be a great show.
The costumes should enhance the flow of movement, help a dancer get into character, and make the performer feel fantastic. Some of the costumes however, have looked bulky or uncomfortable, and occasionally they distract from the dance itself. I often wonder how the dancers themselves feel about the costumes, and if the dancers’ feelings and ideas are taken into account, or if these clothes are forced on them.
Asuka and Jonathan, although good, just cannot meet the caliber of the others. I think they could have, if they just worked harder. During the rehearsal clip, Asuka’s lack of confidence was obvious. You have to be present, working and enjoying every single minute of this golden opportunity. Honestly, I don’t think the Many Moore piece was something to cry about…it wasn’t that difficult. Jonathan, although a cutie-patootie, he ruined the hip hop number. If I was the choreographer, I would have gone to the restroom right after the piece so I could scream BLOODY MURDER!! For advanced dancers not be together on head bobs. Please?? Did you practice this piece at all? I was afraid that Karla would be dragged down with Jonathan. I feel that she had energy and groove. She could have kicked it up a notch or too though. I am glad she didn’t get cut with Jonathan.
The group number on Thursday ROCKED!! Well, what else would you expect from Tabitha and Napoleon. OMG! I love those two!! What fun! It was almost ballroom based and then the hip hop kicked in and Yowzah!!
Can’t wait until Wednesday! Let’s raise the difficulty of the pieces please! And….btw…I love almost all the costumes this year. Come on…Melissa was just so beautiful in that outfit…see what ballet can do for you!!
Okay I am not a trained dancer so some of you will have to bear with me. I agree with the comments that it is the choreography seems off this season. My simplistic impression is that this year is over-choreographed. I think more so this year than in years past the choreographers have really taken into account the strengths and weaknesses of the dancers and have modified routines to match what they have. We know how good the choreographers are, it’s the dancers we’re trying to sort out.
As a viewer I don’t get the sense that many of the dancers need to stretch themselves in order to accomplish their routines even the ones out of their genera. As a result all the numbers seem safe and everyone is awash in vanilla. In past seasons I would hold my breath to see if the popper would be able to make a lift, the contemporary could keep up with the Quickstep or the ballroom dancer could maintain their balance through a series of spins and jumps. This year eh… But the season is still young and maybe they have it programmed differently.
And all this attention on costumes…I rest my case.
i hope that kupono wins i am from maui orignally and i think that it is cool that he is from hawaii to.keep up the good work kupono show america what you are made of. I WILL KEEP VOTING FOR YOU!!
I totally agree with Kris! I think that girls should NOT run around half naked and exposed. It is a stumbling block and I think that anyone who desires to see half naked women is a pervert
I really liked Asuka, I am sorry she got eliminated from the show.
The show is based so much on contestant popularity and ALL the performances are enjoyable by the TV and Studio Audiences. When you consider that the dancers come from different backgrounds and styles of dance, Nigel and Mary would be best suited in leaving their overly technical opinions at home. The average viewer does not know what they are saying half the time in their personal critiques and whats more we don’t care, except when they try to show how brilliant they are and quite often hurt the chances of young dancers who have worked so hard to be successful. Say it was entertaining and let the voters decide and please stop trying to influence the votes with all your over the top comments.
Come on people, enough about the half naked stuff. These are not children on stage they are grown adults wearing dance costumes (which I have seen in competitions on much younger contestants), so if they are too exposed for you then turn the channel. Now on to what this blog is actually suppose to be about. I think Jonathan was sweet, but not as developed professionally as the others. I think Asuka was voted off because of her personality. She came across a bit snotty to me.
I toatally liked johnothan but toatally hated auska. johnothan was a hott guy i hate the judges for making me cry. in my opinion nigel was right when he said that the guys elimination was going to break americas heart. when will the judges ever not send americas faveroites home. i mean first tony, next max and now johnothan. they keep sending home the good ones. whose next phillip or kapono. i voted for all the people in my lecture so i have the right to lecture.
Cool post, just subscribed.
jonathan sooooooo deserved to stay. i always agree with mary on my fav dancers, and she wanted vitolio off the show and jonathan in. you go mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but auska needed to go! she was ok, but not as good as karla and caitlyn and kayla and all of the others….
I’ll start off by saying I haven’t seen dance performances besides ballet. But in respects to the costumes every year I’ve rather disliked alot of their costumes . Do dancers actually dress in those ” looks like two pieces of fabric half sewn together ” outfits? I remember the costume person claimed that she looked at the time era and the type of stuff worn . and what’s up with Kat’s dresses ? . They look like those runway dresses that noone actually wears outside of the fashion show.
I”m still waiting to see talent and personality like Benji’s . I have hope in Evan.
I do think that in some cases the choreography has been lacking this year, but part of that may be that we’re remembering the END of last season, when the dancers were better, vs. the BEGINNING of this season. More importantly, I think it’s the dancers’ personalities that are lacking this year. There IS no Twitch or Joshua or Chelsea or Katie…no Benjis. I honestly haven’t felt much personality from any of the dancers and there are certainly no huge break-out personality stars for me. And that’s part of what choreographers for this show work with – character and personality. So far, they’ve often left me a bit cold (with a few notable exceptions).
I can’t believe these two went before fish face. There’s nothing sadder than seeing real dancers bite the dust so a fan favorite with no substance can continue wasting time.
why oh why are there no full episodes online anywhere? maybe i am missing them? my fiance and i have classes on wednesday nights and can not catch up. we will pay. please oh please where are full episodes.
The Dance whether Nygel Lythgoe knew this or not the Dance that Randi and Evan were doing was a Broadway Routine in this routine tonight to judge this was sort of like Grease were Danny and Sandy were at the Burger Palace Danny holds Sandys’ hand and ask Sandy if she would take him to the Prom when Sandy said yes then she threw two Quaters in the Juke box and played Prom Night . This is where this Routine takes place . Even though they were wearing black
I never thought I would write a post about a show, but I can’t take it anymore. Can someone please put a sock in Mary’s mouth? I can’t enjoy the show with her screeching. Also, how about some shorter and clearer anecdotes from the third judge. You know who you are. You don’t sound more intelligent trying to use big words. Be clear, concise and to the point. That’s it. Enjoy the show.
I am sad about what happened with Asuka and Jonathon
Wow!! Good thing you never watched So You Think You Can Dance Canada for all of you out there with a problem with wardrobe! Even the Adam and Eve dance was pretty skimpy. This show is about dance and celebrating how beautiful the human body is! Why be so worried about covering it all up? Loosen up and enjoy!
Tonight’s show was a total disappointment. I thought “dance for your life” meant just that. Not we’ll see what else you can do later on. If Vitolio Jeune danced better, he should have advanced to the next round. This show is not run the way it should be.
At this point I think it’s fair to Nigel a liar. Just last week he said to Vitolio last week would be the LAST time they saved him, and if he ended up in the bottom 3 again, he would be gone. So what happens? Phillip has to dance for his life for the FIRST TIME this entire season, and Nigel probably couldn’t say his name fast enough. I’ve been disappointed in Mr. Lithgoe before (esp. after bashing Evan and Randi in what I felt was easily one of the top two performances of the night… Evan, IMO, has working for him the same thing Twitch had last year, and that’s the ability to really become an all around entertainer on the stage, putting acting, dancing, and his obviously contagious personality into everything he does–the same way Twitch did last year). But THIS time Nigel made no bones about it. The previous week he told Vitolio this would be the FINAL week he was saved by them. Obviously at this point we can just say right out loud Nigel is a big fat liar! Bill Clinton and G. Dubya have nothing on Nigel as a liar. Way to go Pinocchio!
hey your my fav i love you to death your the best ever lol love lili
Personally, I don’t like Asuka. But I did love Jonathon, and it was depressing seeing him go home. But I hope I will see more of him.
Jonathan was the best in the competition…
stupid judges dont know what they lost.
hi chelsea i lik yor danc goog luk
