Top 4 Finalists Revealed on So You Think You Can Dance

Brandon Bryant, Evan Kasprzak, Jeanine Mason and Kayla Radomski were named SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE’s Top 4 finalists after host Cat Deeley revealed that Melissa Sandvig, 29, a Ballet dancer from Los Alamitos, CA and Ade Obayomi, 20, a Contemporary dancer from Orange County, CA were eliminated from the competition.
The two-night, four-hour season finale of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE promises to be the series’ most spectacular showdown ever! The Top 4 will compete one last time in the hopes of winning America’s vote and the title of America’s Favorite Dancer, a $250,000 cash prize and a featured spot on the cover of the November issue of Dance Spirit magazine. Judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, as well as guest judges Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, Adam Shankman and Debbie Allen, will offer critiques on the final performances of the season. Broadcast for the first time from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, the finale will air Wednesday, Aug. 5 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Thursday, Aug. 6 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.
In addition to naming America’s Favorite Dancer, the two-hour live finale will feature performances by this season’s Top 20 dancers, Hip Hop dance team The Rage Boyz Crew and Talia Fowler, winner of Season Two of “So You Think You Can Dance Australia.” The celebration will also showcase encore performances of the Judges’ favorite routines from Season Five.

I love dancing and performing more than anything in the world and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my love of dance and am so thankful for the great support and dance education I have had. Dance is a part of me – it takes me to a place that makes me truly happy. I would absolutely love to be America’s Favorite Dancer!”

Randi & Kupono Chat About DANCE

Randi and Kupono were eliminated from The Top 10 of So You Think You Can Dance. The morning after their elimination, they opened up about their time on the show and their future plans on a press call.Randi Evans, the 5′3″ blonde with a bright smile and personality, was ecstatic to make it on to the show after three years of auditioning for it. Before announcing that she made it to the Top 20, Mia joked with Randi about her collection of unitards.
For the first five weeks on the show, Randi was paired up with Evan. The pint-sized pair had an amazing chemistry together. Randi mentioned that “we just hit if off right at the beginning. Having to switch partners for the first time this week, Randi found it challenging to have such a limited amount of time to learn two dances with a new partner this week. However, she thinks Kupono is a great guy and that they gave it their all. Randi hopes that she and Evan will get the opportunity to perform their jazz routine from the first week on the tour. She also loved the Mia Michaels’ “butt dance,” and would like the opportunity to dance that again.
When Randi found out that she was in the bottom two couples, she held herself together quite well and kept her signature smile on her face. She said, “I kind of had a feeling that I would be [in the bottom] just because the numbers the previous night had been so great.” Randi said that the girls she was competing against were just so amazing. She knew someone had to go, and she felt that she had a really good run on the show. And now Randi can keep holding her head up high because she’s headed on tour with her fellow Dance finalists. “I feel lucky to have gotten as far as I did and I’m on tour and get to spend tour with amazing people,” she said.
Besides dancing, Randi describes herself as an “outdoor junkie.” She loves to go camping, boating, and four-wheeling with her husband and her family. It’s not every day that Randi is wearing fringe and make-up!
Randi is walking away from the show with some good advice from the choreographers. They said “the general idea for me was to just take risks and don’t be like an ‘in-your-box’ dancer – really explore and see how far you can take your dancing.”
To all of her fans, Randi would like to say thank you. “I can’t believe the love and support that I’ve gotten from so many people – people that I don’t even know – it’s just crazy to me, so I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough!”
Kupono Aweau, the Hawaiian contemporary dancer, had a great ability to connect to the pieces he danced. During one episode, Mia Michaels mentioned that everything the judges have asked Kupono to change, he has.
When Kupono was in fifth grade, he witnessed a girl dance a solo in a school performance. He thought she was so cool, and that was what inspired him to dance. However, the dancing industry in Hawaii isn’t that big and there aren’t many studios, so Kupono wasn’t able to attend a studio until he was old enough to get himself there. “Once I did, though, it kind of just cannon-balled from there and just kind of got better and better and better…it really helped me just perfect my technique,” Kupono said.
On the So You Think You Can Dance website, Kupono’s signature dance move is pretty hilarious and something everyone can do at home. Check it out here: http://www.fox.com/dance/videos/season5/index.htm. Kupono explained his signature move and said, “That’s like my happy dance. It’s kind of like the thing that I do when I’m back stage; it’s what I do to make people laugh or get my spirits up…It’s the most ridiculous movement ever, so when you’re doing it, you can’t help but smile and I’ve always got positive energy.”
During Kupono’s first week on the show, he performed a crash test dummies routine that was choreographed by Wade Robson. Kupono was ecstatic to work with Wade. “When you’re working with Wade, he’s just a very positive person and I’m all about energies and all that kind of stuff. He really took into consideration Ashley and myself…we found ourselves in the characters that he gave us.”
Another powerful piece Kupono performed was Mia Michaels’ “Addiction” themed piece. Kupono explained, “I feel like [Mia] brought stuff out that I didn’t know was there. My family is so much better at everything – they’re much healthier and all that. And I’ve dealt with everything, but clearly, there is something in there that I just didn’t know was still there with me, and it was almost like therapy. So it’s like I needed Mia Michaels in my life, I needed her, I needed that piece, I needed Kayla, that whole moment- I needed it.”
Kupono showed us his OCD side on the show. Besides being super organized, he was always making check lists with his goals. What’s next on Kupono’s to-do list? He can’t wait to go home and see his family and give his niece “knuckles”- their special handshake.
Lastly, Kupono said, “I’m completely excited and ecstatic and so, so grateful for all this. Everyone and anything that I’ve ever come into contact with, and came across in this whole process, it’s been absolutely amazing and I’m just so grateful.”

Caitlin Kinney and Phillip Chbeeb Talk

Caitlin & Phillip with Cat
Caitlin Kinney and Phillip Chbeeb were eliminated in a bittersweet episode on Thursday. Both were hoping to make the Top 10, but after being eliminated at the Top 12 mark, Executive Producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe announced that Caitlin and Phillip will be joining the Top 10 as alternate dancers during the fall Season 5 So You Think You Can Dance tour. The day after the tough elimination, Caitlin and Phillip opened up about their time on the show.
Phillip Chbeeb won over the hearts of America last season when he auditioned for Season 4. After suffering from pneumonia during Vegas week, Phillip had to withdraw from the competition. Fortunately, Phillip was asked to perform during the Season 4 finale. After taking a year to train and become a well-rounded dancer, a healthy Phillip auditioned for Season 5 and made it onto the show. Although Phillip was the dancer with the least amount of formal training, his personality and mind-blowing pop locking moves made him one of America’s favorite dancers.
As an Engineering Physics major at Loyola Marymount University, Phillip stated, “The major itself is so stressful that I really needed an outlet of some sort and I feel like dance has provided that easily whenever engineering gets too stressful.” He explained that his style of dance is very calculated and mathematical, so the two go hand-in-hand. Just as Phillip was encountering some difficulties finding a way to pay for college, he found out he’d be touring with Dance. Now, Phillip can take the semester off of school and save up money while he’s touring, before heading back for the following semester. Phillip said, “It’s amazing how things work out. It’s a blessing.” As for the future, Phillip is going to start choreographing because that’s his main passion. He hopes to be able to choreograph for So You Think You Can Dance in the future. Meanwhile, he will continue to follow his physics ambitions.
A standout routine this season for Phillip was when he performed hip hop to “Love Lockdown” with Jeanine. In this dance, Phillip and Jeanine were chained together at the ankles, and they encountered every obstacle imaginable while trying to rehearse the dance. “Just getting through that piece and making Napoleon and Tabitha proud, because I know that was probably one of the most difficult pieces they’ve had to put on anybody, was a great thing,” Phillip admitted. He said his entire time on the show was an uphill battle due to his lack of training.
Phillip was feeling mixed emotions on Thursday night after finding out he was cut, but that he made it to the tour. Ultimately, Phillip decided, “If it’s my time to go, it’s my time to go, and the fact that I’m on tour makes it all worth it.” He thinks the Top 10 dancers are all amazing. In regards to the tour, Phillip is most looking forward to more bonding time with his fellow dancers. Lastly, Phillip would like to say thanks to all of his fans for the continuous support.
Caitlin Kinney started off as a gymnast before taking up classical ballet. As a dancer, she learned to fuse her acrobatics with ballet, thanks to some great teachers along the way. Since Caitlin took up dance later in life, she said, “My passion for it has never wavered or dwindled and I’m still going strong.”
Right after finding out she wasn’t advancing to the Top 10, Nigel announced on the live show that Caitlin and Jason would join their fellow Top 10 dancers on the road this summer. Caitlin reflected on the moment when she heard the news and said, “I think that was really touching for us to have them have that kind of faith in us and know right away that we add something to the group and that they really want us on tour. That meant the world to us.”
Caitlin and Jason started off the show with the tricky Bollywood routine that they mastered. During this routine, they showed instant versatility, strength, and chemistry. Caitlin said it wasn’t as easy as it looked, and she and Jason stayed up all night trying to master the finger positions. And the handstand that kicked off the routine wasn’t originally in the choreography, until Jason mentioned to the choreographers that Caitlin is a talented gymnast. Caitlin practiced her inverted dance moves in the corner of the rehearsal room, and the choreographers thought it was great and added it to the number. Recently, the judges commented that they didn’t see chemistry between Caitlin and Jason. Caitlin was shocked to hear this because she said that out of all the couples, she thinks she and Jason were the closest and they always hung out together. Ultimately, she thinks that the judges felt this way because they showed incredible chemistry in their Bollywood performance that ended with a kiss, so there was no way to grow their chemistry from there. Caitlin has no regrets though: “Jason and I are great friends. I just had a wonderful time working with him. We got along so well. I wouldn’t have had any other partner.”
Caitlin was in the bottom three couples three times this season. Although that can be very frustrating, Caitlin said she became the “mom” of the bottom three and would always cheer on her fellow dancers and ease their worries. Always an optimist, Caitlin said that being in the bottom three often provided her more opportunities to dance on the stage. This experience has also taught her some valuable advice to “always question yourself, but never doubt yourself.” If Caitlin had the opportunity to stay on the show, she would have liked to have performed a contemporary routine and a waltz.
In a message to her fans, Caitlin said, “Thank you to everyone who supported me on the show and for the outpouring of love and support I got from people who I’ve never met before, and who I don’t know and don’t know me, but were touched by my dancing. That means the world. So thank you to all those people who did, and I’ll see them on tour.”

Karla and Vitolio Open Up

KARLA AND VITOLIO OPEN UP ABOUT THEIR TIME ON THE SHOW
New couple Karla and Vitolio were eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance during the Top 14 week. Shortly after their elimination, Karla and Vitolio opened up about their experiences on the show.
Karla Garcia, a contemporary jazz dancer who resides in New York, was originally paired with Jonathan Platero on So You Think You Can Dance. After Jonathan was eliminated during the Top 16 week, Karla got paired up with Vitolio Jeune. Karla said that it was hard to have a new partner after growing so close with Jonathan. It was a challenge because Karla and Vitolio “had to find that connection and that chemistry in very little time, plus the added layer of having the hardest dance style ever on the show that we had to work with.” Karla thinks that these challenges brought the new couple closer together.
On Wednesday’s show, Karla and Vitolio made several mentions of the Quickstep being “the kiss of death.” Karla admitted that she began practicing her solo as soon as she pulled the “Quickstep” card. She explained that this style of dance is so tough because you have to stay in close contact with your partner, you have to move quickly, and you have to work together intimately, which was difficult since Vitolio and Karla hadn’t worked together before. However, Karla was thankful that Jean Marc Genereux choreographed a great routine and had the patience and guidance to teach Karla and Vitolio how to dance the Quickstep.
Karla’s favorite dance she performed on the show was Stacey Tookey’s contemporary routine. She called the experience rewarding and exhilarating, and said, “I felt like that was my most shining moment and I was really blessed to have such wonderful choreography by Stacey, especially because she guided us a lot on that week.” If Karla had the opportunity to stay on the show, she would have loved to work with Napoleon and Tabitha- “they know how to tell a story and entertain an audience, and they’re such positive people to work with.”
What’s next for Karla? After some relaxation and family time, Karla plans to pursue some of the offers she got to teach and perform. She will also dance with the Radio City Rockettes in New York City. Karla also hopes to get into acting and just try new things!
Vitolio Jeune has an inspiring story that touched the hearts of fans across the country. As a boy, Vitolio lived in an orphanage and was inspired to dance after watching a Michael Jackson video. After leaving the orphanage, Vitolio turned to dancing on the streets as a way to make money to support his grandmother and brother.
When Vitolio heard the news that his dance inspiration, Michael Jackson, had passed, it was ten minutes before the live results show and Vitolio couldn’t believe it. Although Vitolio couldn’t stop crying after hearing the news, he said Michael’s passing “brought some inspiration into me, and made me really go out there and do my thing.”
The two dances Vitolio enjoyed the most on the show were his waltz and Quickstep. He loved working with choreographer Jean Marc Genereux, who was fun to be around and helpful. Drawing the Quickstep also brought new couple Karla and Vitolio closer together because they had to practice at every available moment. Vitolio still believes they turned the “kiss of death into the kiss of joy.”
Vitolio is very thankful for his time on So You Think You Can Dance. Thinking about his future, Vitolio said, “I’m planning on moving back to L.A. and keep on dancing, choreographing, and hopefully getting into acting and modeling, and I’m thinking about as well probably writing a book about my life story.”
