Caitlin Kinney and Phillip Chbeeb Talk

Caitlin & Phillip with Cat
Caitlin Kinney and Phillip Chbeeb were eliminated in a bittersweet episode on Thursday. Both were hoping to make the Top 10, but after being eliminated at the Top 12 mark, Executive Producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe announced that Caitlin and Phillip will be joining the Top 10 as alternate dancers during the fall Season 5 So You Think You Can Dance tour. The day after the tough elimination, Caitlin and Phillip opened up about their time on the show.
Phillip Chbeeb won over the hearts of America last season when he auditioned for Season 4. After suffering from pneumonia during Vegas week, Phillip had to withdraw from the competition. Fortunately, Phillip was asked to perform during the Season 4 finale. After taking a year to train and become a well-rounded dancer, a healthy Phillip auditioned for Season 5 and made it onto the show. Although Phillip was the dancer with the least amount of formal training, his personality and mind-blowing pop locking moves made him one of America’s favorite dancers.
As an Engineering Physics major at Loyola Marymount University, Phillip stated, “The major itself is so stressful that I really needed an outlet of some sort and I feel like dance has provided that easily whenever engineering gets too stressful.” He explained that his style of dance is very calculated and mathematical, so the two go hand-in-hand. Just as Phillip was encountering some difficulties finding a way to pay for college, he found out he’d be touring with Dance. Now, Phillip can take the semester off of school and save up money while he’s touring, before heading back for the following semester. Phillip said, “It’s amazing how things work out. It’s a blessing.” As for the future, Phillip is going to start choreographing because that’s his main passion. He hopes to be able to choreograph for So You Think You Can Dance in the future. Meanwhile, he will continue to follow his physics ambitions.
A standout routine this season for Phillip was when he performed hip hop to “Love Lockdown” with Jeanine. In this dance, Phillip and Jeanine were chained together at the ankles, and they encountered every obstacle imaginable while trying to rehearse the dance. “Just getting through that piece and making Napoleon and Tabitha proud, because I know that was probably one of the most difficult pieces they’ve had to put on anybody, was a great thing,” Phillip admitted. He said his entire time on the show was an uphill battle due to his lack of training.
Phillip was feeling mixed emotions on Thursday night after finding out he was cut, but that he made it to the tour. Ultimately, Phillip decided, “If it’s my time to go, it’s my time to go, and the fact that I’m on tour makes it all worth it.” He thinks the Top 10 dancers are all amazing. In regards to the tour, Phillip is most looking forward to more bonding time with his fellow dancers. Lastly, Phillip would like to say thanks to all of his fans for the continuous support.
Caitlin Kinney started off as a gymnast before taking up classical ballet. As a dancer, she learned to fuse her acrobatics with ballet, thanks to some great teachers along the way. Since Caitlin took up dance later in life, she said, “My passion for it has never wavered or dwindled and I’m still going strong.”
Right after finding out she wasn’t advancing to the Top 10, Nigel announced on the live show that Caitlin and Jason would join their fellow Top 10 dancers on the road this summer. Caitlin reflected on the moment when she heard the news and said, “I think that was really touching for us to have them have that kind of faith in us and know right away that we add something to the group and that they really want us on tour. That meant the world to us.”
Caitlin and Jason started off the show with the tricky Bollywood routine that they mastered. During this routine, they showed instant versatility, strength, and chemistry. Caitlin said it wasn’t as easy as it looked, and she and Jason stayed up all night trying to master the finger positions. And the handstand that kicked off the routine wasn’t originally in the choreography, until Jason mentioned to the choreographers that Caitlin is a talented gymnast. Caitlin practiced her inverted dance moves in the corner of the rehearsal room, and the choreographers thought it was great and added it to the number. Recently, the judges commented that they didn’t see chemistry between Caitlin and Jason. Caitlin was shocked to hear this because she said that out of all the couples, she thinks she and Jason were the closest and they always hung out together. Ultimately, she thinks that the judges felt this way because they showed incredible chemistry in their Bollywood performance that ended with a kiss, so there was no way to grow their chemistry from there. Caitlin has no regrets though: “Jason and I are great friends. I just had a wonderful time working with him. We got along so well. I wouldn’t have had any other partner.”
Caitlin was in the bottom three couples three times this season. Although that can be very frustrating, Caitlin said she became the “mom” of the bottom three and would always cheer on her fellow dancers and ease their worries. Always an optimist, Caitlin said that being in the bottom three often provided her more opportunities to dance on the stage. This experience has also taught her some valuable advice to “always question yourself, but never doubt yourself.” If Caitlin had the opportunity to stay on the show, she would have liked to have performed a contemporary routine and a waltz.
In a message to her fans, Caitlin said, “Thank you to everyone who supported me on the show and for the outpouring of love and support I got from people who I’ve never met before, and who I don’t know and don’t know me, but were touched by my dancing. That means the world. So thank you to all those people who did, and I’ll see them on tour.”

I would love to see these two as an active part of the dance tour performance, not just as seconds. I think they both would add a lot to the show — I hope to get to see them when I go to one of the concerts!!!
Great job Philip!!!!
Your number One in my book!!!
The Dance Randi and Kupono were Doing as I told Randi by vote a second ago when your dancing with somebody who knows about characteristic it is best bet that you get a guy knows how to dance with Passion . Randi did an excellent job on her solo. She went from quick step to ballet in a second. Question and I think Nigel was asking the same exact thing . Why dose Ade wear a comb in his head.
Why have you changed your program? We have enjoyed the couples dancing each week. Dancing individually is only a tidbit and was fine for the “dancing for your life” portion of the show but is not good enough . And dancing in a group? How can you choose a dancer with that venue? This is terrible. Hope that you change this.
Phillip you were an excellent dance and entertainer… you made laugh and proud. But, the russian dance was a terrible cheoragraphy. So do not worry about it. You did terrific in all your performance.
I have been dancing all of my life and also country western,
So you think you can dance and dancing with the starts is my favoriate and I always feel like a judge because I know so much.
But honestly I feel Catlin got horribly robbed. The costumes were AWFUL and the alien dance was beyond showing off here abilities.
Then the silver and green dress was defiately the focus because it was sososososo ugly you never looked at her and her beautiful dancing. So glad Nigel had then touring. She should be brought back for another chance and show her off with the costumes like you do the others. I felt very sorry for her.
I do agree with alll you when you send this is the best season for dancers and they are all good.
Nigel you need to stop saying negitive things to you refer to as Gene Kelly or last night as a vanilla shake Not nice.
I wish the camera guys would leave the shots still and wide for the group dances! Last night (Wednesday, 7/15) was a perfect example of this as well as tonight’s opening group performance with Japanese influences. You miss so much of the beauty and drama with the cutting camera shots and close-ups. You miss the entire stage with their abrupt style and cuts.
Phillip u are awesome!!!!! Hope to see u in Houston or Austin on the tour
I’ve been a faithful fan of sytyd since season 1 and I am boycotting the rest of this season because Philip was cut. Dancers like him are what this show is supposed to be about. Not ballet dancers in their toe shoes…come on now who else could have done that ballet routine. I’m so disappointed! Go Philip! I voted 25 times for you!
Although I believe everyone in the top 20 were all very talented, I believe Caitlin being cut before making the top 10 was a bad decision on their part. Compare her solos to all the other girls… she had more technique, style, and agility on her own without choreography than all the other girls. I’m very disappointed and am not motivated to watch the show any longer. Thank-you for the nice run. It was wonderful until now.
caitlin and jason both have had the worst luck and i thought they made the best of the dances they were given. i feel so bad for caitlin if she watched that dance with jason and jeanine that must have killed her because she said her and jason were the closest friends
i think melissa should have gone with philip. its so unfair but at least she gets to go on the tour
caitlin was amazing! in one of her last solos it was beautiful!!!!! she was truly amazing and it was a bad mistake to cut her before the top 10. but she will be on tour!!!!
it is really unfair for caitlin. she is reaaaally good (better than the other girls that were in the bottom3 + some that weren’t), and she just had really bad luck with the choreographers and costumers. maybe they didn’t like her?
and i also really liked phillip.
both should not have been cut D:
i don’t watch the show anymore.
I really think Phillip showed such growth from last years shows to current. The way he adapted, grew and CONCORD the SILLIEST to the most demanding dances the show had him doing. I am GLAD that he is going to be touring and look forward to seeing YOU PHILLIP IN Newark, NJ in September! Never stop dancing!! Congrats on your MAJOR! Good luck in that and remember work is work but your passion IS LIFE!
AS for Caitlin.. I loved watching from the beginning of the season. From when they were running you all ragged in Las Vegas at the very beginning through last weeks show you showed such grace, personality and growth through all the performances you did. I look very forward to watching you perform in NJ in September also! Remember they need great dancers like you on a GOOD Broadway musical!!! Keep looking up!
Phillip, there’s something about that stole my heart. You remind me of my oldest son-he’s 25. I thought you were fabulous during auditions and kept my eye on you throughout the show. When you were next to perform I would call my youngest son in to watch you. I would say, “Watch this guy! He is so cool, and so good!” I cried too when you were cut. I don’t go to many concerts but if the tour comes close to my town – I’M THERE! LUV YA!
Phillip, your the best, ripped pants and all.had to say it.i hope you become a teacher of your dance the world needs it and you.Your the best………!
This show is no longer good to me cause every time i see it the best lose and the one that shouldint have won, win’s.Really he should of stayyed and won but like always, they take the best off.
Phillip, it is sad to see you leave this competition. I’m from Australia and we are a number of weeks behind. we will be watching the top 14 this friday but i have accidentally view this website and found out that you have been eliminated! It is terrible news to me because i love watching you dance. you are a joy to watch! you are my favourite. all the best.
Thanks god Phillip is out after being carried by simpathy by the judges round after round, Phillip you are a great hiphoper but nothing to do will many dancers that were eliminated because of you….
Im so glad they are coming. Both were one of my favorites!!! Thank God they are coming to Houston!!! Already got my tickets!!!
I have to agree regarding the comments about Caitlin. I felt she was given some of the worst routines to dance and her costumes were often terrible. I remember seeing her dance early on, and I thought, if they ever remake the “Oklahoma” movie I’d love to see her dance the part of Laura in the big dance number. She would be wonderful in that. I also agree with her comments about wishing she could have danced a waltz and a contemporary number. Those would have been her strongest dances. Of course, who knows how they would have dressed her. Her contemporary number could have had her dancing on all fours like an insect.
I don’t think the best dancer was picked. Brandon is the best dancer. This show is call so you think you can dance, not America favorite dancer and Cat need to stop saying that. Mary stated weeks ago to pick the dancer who from the beginning prove to he or she could and have cross genre, perform and put there all into their performs, not to view on one performance but everything that dancer had done overall. I socked to see Brandon lose to someone who cleared didn’t have as much talent as he. She had one good solo and several hits’ and misses..But BRANDON, humble talent beyond his wildest dreams did what the show asked of him will passion, grace and load of personality.. I DONE with Show because Americans have lost sight of what the show is truly about..Brandon you’re a winner and will go on to do GREAT and I mean GREAT things with your GOD given TALENT!!Dream BIG the world is at your HANDS>>
i ♥ phillip so much he is a good dancer
