Randi and Küpono Eliminated

Two more finalists were eliminated tonight on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE after host Cat Deeley announced that Randi Evans & Küpono Aweau received the fewest of America’s votes. Evans, 23, is a Jazz dancer from Springville, UT, and Aweau, 23, is a Lyrical/Contemporary dancer from Kailua, HI. This week’s results show featured The Black Eyed Peas performing “I Gotta Feeling,” from their No. 1 album, “The E.N.D.”
Series Celebrates Milestone 100th Episode Thursday, July 23; Katie Holmes Performs and Jaimie Goodwin, Hok Konishi, Travis Wall and Heidi Groskreutz-Burns Return
Next week, talk-show host and dance enthusiast Ellen DeGeneres and Emmy Award-winning choreographer Mia Michaels will join judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy as guest judges of the Top 8 finalists (Brandon Bryant, Jason Glover, Evan Kasprzak, Janette Manrara, Jeanine Mason, Ade Obayomi, Kayla Radomski and Melissa Sandvig) when they compete with new partners on a two-hour performance show Wednesday, July 22 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
The following night, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE will celebrate its milestone 100th episode with a special performance of “Get Happy” by Katie Holmes as well as the return of fan-favorite and Emmy Award-winning routines, including Wade Robson’s “Ramalama (Bang Bang)” and “The Hummingbird and the Flower” (performed by Jaimie Goodwin and Hok Konishi) and Mia Michaels’ “The Bench” (performed by Travis Wall and Heidi Groskreutz-Burns). Then the results of America’s vote will be announced, sending two more dancers home on the live results show Thursday, July 23 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed).

Sad to see Randi go, as well as Kupono … but totally MAD I missed the show. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC, and I don’t know why but they didn’t air the elimination show. I sat through two completely ridiculous infomercials, hoping that perhaps the show was just delayed, but sadly that was not the case.
I love love love SYTYCD. Hopefully, the local Fox network will get their head pulled out of dark places and make sure this show is NEVER passed over again!
[...] as well as the return of fan-favorite and Emmy Award-winning routines, including Wade … http://fox.com/blogs/dance/2009/07/17/randi-and-kupono-eliminated/ Daily [...]
would like to view the episode! i missed it due to a power outage. why can we view most (or all) any other FOX show episode but not this one….”So you think you can dance”?
Hopefully I can and just haven’t figured out how yet.
Thanks.
Danielle
Kapuno, I’m going to miss you. You had the most vibrant, clear,
advanced energy of anyone on that show! I’m not even going
to watch the show anymore without you on it. Many blessings
on your journey through life….keep that great attitude.
RAMALAMA is one of the best routines ever!! I am pumped to see it performed again! Thanks Wade for being so awesome at what you do!!
I cannot wait to see Travis and Heidi dance again!!!!! I remember exactly where I was when they first danced “The Bench” and cried it was so beautiful.
YAY!!!!!
Kupono NO!!! I voted for you so many times, I am very sorry it wasn’t enough to keep you in. :v( I think you should have won this year! I’ll have to see you again on the tour…. *kiss*!
poor Randi I love Randi Kupano wasnt that good
There sure is a striking resemblance between Randi and country singer Kelli Pickler formerly from American Idol. Being Kelli’s mother left her when she was little, could Randi be her sister? I look at the picture of Randi and see Kelli.
I didn’t like Kupono at first, but he won he over w/ his passion and presence when he danced. He may not have the been the strongest guy there, but he was mesmerizing to watch – he took on a character completely. He always held his own and improved every week… he shouldn’t have been eliminated!! It should have been Evan!!! BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I hated to see Randi go. She was one of my favorites. I on the other hand was glad to see Kupano leave the program. Better him than Aday. I know I spelled his name wrong.
totally agree with thte results! go jeanine and brandon!! http://www.screammary.com
I love the show. I would really be interested in learning how these chorgraphers work out these routines, from the music, the moves and teaching.
Did anyone else have this problem? I DVR’ed the Wednesday show and Randi and Kupono’s dance was NEVER shown. I’ve run through my recording at least 7 times and their performance was not shown! Maybe it was just regionally their dance was removed from the viewing and others did get to see it? I saw both of their solos but not their couple’s dance. Could this be why they were both voted off?
Totally bummed about Kupono….I loved his off-center technique and his personality. He was the Hawian Sunrise to the show! : ( (voted for him more than i have ever voted for any contestant in previous seasons.)
I had very had time voting,I keep getting a funny message,Why Ade was on the bottom is news to me. Ade had one of the best solo and love the hip hop they did. SMDH
What was up with last nights episode? Apparently it wasn’t shown in SC. Is there some way that they can air it here for us fans?
I also wasn’t able to watch it due to a severe storm. Wish it was on the site to see. Maybe you’ll figure it out soon, or air a repeat of it. Would love to see, love the show I never miss one!
I missed the show too! We had a severe thunderstorm and it took out my signal! Please figure out how to put up episodes from previous shows. I never miss one and would love to see this show!
I have no idea what America was thinking by kicking these two off. Kupono was amazing, and I really don’t know why people hate him. And people love Evan too much, more than they do Randi. So that is what is so absurd about this. Evan isn’t even that good… I even prefer Ade better. Atleast we still got Kayla, Janette, Jason, and Brandon on the show. But who knows what America would do to them.
I thought Kupono was amazing right from when he auditioned. It sucks to see him leave…he was great!! Passion and devotion flowed throughout each and every one of his dances. I can’t wait for the tour now…I’m only gonna go just to see Kupono!!!!!
These are the most painful eliminations of any season. Everyone is so wonderful. I have loved almost every routine (even the Russian dance). Randi was wonderful but her future is teaching and she will be brilliant. I really hope she continues dancing. Kupono has so many gifts with an incredible work ethic and personality. I’m hoping for Evan despite the judges slams. I’ll be happy with whoever the winner is and I believe it will be Kayla. Great season and so looking forward to next week, next season and the tour!!
I am such a fan of all the dancers this season. I must admit, I am an even bigger fan of Travis WALL and his choreography! The amazing routine he choreographed this week was nothing less than spectacular! The dancers made it even that much better! I wish all three the BEST of luck in VERY successful careers! Watching Travis makes me cry each time from the beauty and passion he puts forth… and the dancers that danced his routine this week made me do the same!! KUDOS!
I only watch the dancing part which I think that this season has had the best dancers ever.
I love Melissa she is beautiful.
Unfortunately Cat has taken over the show and it is a shame because she dwarfs all the contestants.
She really should go. I find her accent very irritating and I change channels when she is on or mute her.
Thank heavens for the mut button
I’m guessing my area was included in the power outage, because I taped the show via DVR and I got nothing but a black screen. Hoping to see next weeks clips of the show. Get it coming Brandon and Kayla!!
everybody this season has been ABSOLUTELY amazing. i love all that was left. I’m sad to see the pair of them gone. Randi is beautiful and fantabulous. And kupono performed my favorite routine of all time as an addiction, the mia michaels with kayla. he brought tears to my eyes when he talked about how rough the role was for him.
This was the best show since week one: great variety, refreshing to see new pairs (Evan and Kayla looked a little goofy together but I think it did wonders for her popularity), and a fair result! It was comical to see the judges wondering how their favorites (Randi and Kupono) could have ended up on the bottom: could-it-be-the-hair-extensions? All the performances were superb so the just-OK Paso Doble really stood out clearly for elimination. (Jason and Caitlyn did a much better rendition way back in week 3, I think.) The dancers seemed to understand and accept their elimination much better than the judges.
The show is not as good as previous season. The dancer are good, but this season good dancer are being voted off. It’s obvious Kayla is being covered to stay on the the show. I get the impression that she related to some chorgrapher(s) or behind the scene producer. I find it hard to see where her lines are good and her body not as sculpted as the other advanced dancer. Judges seem like they all were told to give her great reviews, but can never state what dance moves she has done well. Seem she get favorable routines to make through when she has been weakest of female dancer. Show seem to be fixed.
MY WIFE AND I LOVE ALL THE DANCERS. IT’S A GREAT SEASON WITH GREAT DANCERS. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THE CAMERA. IT WOULD BE NICE TO LEAVE THE DAM CAMERAS ON THE DANCERS AND FORGET THE FANCY SHOTS. ALL THAT DOES IS INTERFERE WITH THE ENJOYMENT OF THE SHOW! WE UNDERSTAND CAMERA ANGELS ARE IMPORTANT, BUT NOT ONE EVERY 10 SECONDS. THANKS YOU TO WHO EVER READS THIS THAT CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
I too live in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and was really upset to find the show was not broadcast and had to settle for two infomercials. I taped the show on drv and was really mad. I never miss the show and think the talent this year is the very best. Sad t See Randi eliminated but any of the top 12 could win and you couldn’t really argue with the results. I do think the girls are much better than the guys this season. Wish the road show was coming to Myrtle Beach, I’d definitely buy a ticket. Best of luck to all!
How come in South Carolina there were informercials on in stead of the result who on July 16th. I am VERY upset about this and I am not sure who messed up but I think the show needs to be re-run.
The show wasn’t aired in Buffalo, NY either! I couldn’t wait to get home from work to watch the elimination & the Black Eyed Peas, only to NOT find the show on my list! Please allow everyone to watch the episodes online if they’re missed!!
I agree to a point with most everyone. I think America voted on just what they viewed from Wed night….without taking the whole season in their decision. Randi is a fabulous dancer….but…unfortunately she got hooked up with Kapono. I think that was her demise this week. I for one was THRILLED to see him go. He seemed very egotistical and full of himself to me. That’s just my 2 cents worth. My vote for top three…Brandon, Janine, and Janette. This next week will be interesting, to say the least!!
I wonder who picks Cat Deeley’s wardrobe. She has some of the ugliest dresses I’ve ever seen in my life. I wonder if she realizes how some of them make her look. She definitely needs a better stylist. Some of the costumes the dancers wear are so amazing and others are so horrible, which certainly take away from their amazing performances.
I’m just sayin’…..
It is time to move on Randi has done a nice job .As if Wednesday if I were Randi dancing with a guy. If I were Randi dancing with somebody with character. They better dance it with passion now were down to Evan and Kayla. The only complaint that Evan has with Kayla is that she’s taller than him.
In my opinion, America got it right!
But now, that we are down to 8 contestants, the elimination is obviously going to get harder, so I would like to reinforce to all the voters out there, don’t assume your favorite contestant is safe.
As for Randi & Küpono, in my opinion, this was really their time to go. As I said earlier, I wish that for this season, we could keep everyone, since they seem very, very talented (and very attractive, too!), but as always, being that this is a competition necessitates that someone should be eliminated every week. Nigel even made that clear on the air a while ago this season.
As for Melissa, our ballerina, I honestly thought that she did great this week. But since she landed in the bottom two, voters, please try to vote more for her, and especially if her voting number is 1-888-TEMPO-01 (or if the last digit is some other early number like 2 or 3). I actually voted 1,106 (one thousand one hundred and six) times for her using one phone in the two hours I was allotted, but NOT using power dialing.
I think Ade was not a good choice for the bottom two, but then again, you never really know what kind of voting plan these voters are up to. Let’s hope he does better next week, and people vote more for him.
And of course, Janette was as best as she could be! She is a really strong contender, so us voters must try get her to the finale. She is absolutely smokin’! There is only room for four contestants in the finale, so voters, please try to vote more for her, because it is going to get harder as we continue through the season. I (and perhaps millions of other people) really liked both her duo and her solo! I hope she does just as good or even better next week!
And as for Jeanine & Jason, that was one impressive duo routine!
I hope that Randi & Küpono will come back for a guest performance sometime this season and in later seasons, as well. I wish them good luck in the future.
But I want to say, huge congratulations for this show receiving FIVE Emmy nominations! How outstanding! And congratulations to Nigel on getting his doctorate degree in England! What a fantastic week this has been!
Good luck to the Top 8! I hope the voters vote wisely, hope the contestants do a lot better, and I’ll see you next week! Until then, take care!
Somebody PLEASE let TONY and MEREDITH GO! there choreography is terrible. You can’t expect anybody to dance a paso doble with DIES IRAE!!! A very important part of a dance Style is most definitively the music. You can’t expect bollywood with Bach, or Tango with a Waltz.
Why can’t they just use the appropriate music? As a musician i feel disgusted by there “creativity”. I seriously feel sorry for anybody that has to dance their work.
PLEASE GET RID OF THEM AND GET A SERIOUS CHOREOGRAPHER!!
i was kinda sad to c kupono go he was so good, i think evan shuld of went home instead.
Well America, here we are, by the far the toughest elimination of the season. We have 4 incredible female dancers, all worthy of being a champion — and 1 must go home. In the 1st three weeks of the season Melissa gave wonderful performances in contemporary, jazz, and ball room. But the audience has seemed to have forgotten her versatility and see her as merely a ballerina. If she is to stay alive, she will need a strong non-ballet performance in her duo.
And Kayla really is something special. Her combonation of grace and power is unusual for a female. And she has been outstanding in every thing she has been given. However, the choreographers have failed to stretch her the way they have stretched Janette and Jenine.
For you voters who will make your decisions based on versatility I recommend that you look at the last bollywood routine, if you have that show on tape. Watch it 5 times and focus on one lady at a time. You may be surprised, as I was, that Janitte gave the best performance of the 5, followed by Kayla. This was enough for me to tip my most versital female to Janette, so far. For versatility, Jenine is ever so close. Good luck to your favorites.
So this is my favorite show on the planet, and I think it would be a great idea for you to have the full episodes or at least everyones dances of the season on the website. I am always wanting to rewatch them but unfortunately I dont have DVR. So, just a suggestion.
I have a suggestion for next season.
Have the top female and the top male dances share the prize.
There is such a difference between the two genders in dancing and often the female seems to be doing all the work.
NOT FAIR.
I live in Israel, me and my daughters watch it every friday as our weekend thing!! My oldest daughter is the biggest fan of Kayla, my middle child loved philup and my youngest is going to be pissed when she knows Kapono is now off the show!! (She just loved his quirky style!! she herself is a very unique indevidual!)
I myself love to watch every week and just can’t pick on guy or girl out of the group!
Brandon is amazing!!! So is the hot tamolllie from Miami!! Kayla is just beautiful both in the way she dances and the way her face shines when she dances!! Jennine is a star and last week really braught me to tears with her preformance with jason! It is just an amazing program to sit and watch!!! I am addicted to it!!!
Good job judges with your pics this year! you out did yourselvs!!
I started putting my girls this year in dance class and it is amazing the confidence it has given them since me and their father got our devorce!! Dance is a laungage and it can let us tell a story words can’t. it can heal our soul and your dances inspier us all!!! me to be a better mother and my kids to be able to speak without words!
xoxoxoxoxox
Nigel, I don’t know how much MJ music u asked to use but all u need is Black or White. I just watched that video & the first thing I thought about was “So You Think You Can Dance!” MJ used all kinds of styles in that video! See what the Jackson Family say about just the 1 song?
show is great. mary mccarthy is a disaster. I turn it off when she starts screaming.
I really wish that they would Hulu this show. I missed both shows this week.
Melisa, Debbie Allen is right. You need to bring some excitement to your solo performances, that is, in costumes and excerpt of dances of well known ballets that feature a female solo dancer, such as Don Quioxte, Fire Bird, etc. I think this would show off your ballet techniques.
Hi all,
I think Randi is very sweet and definitely a great dancer. It’s kinda sad to see her leave. Oh well.. The show must go on. =)
Anyway, I want to ask any of you if you guys know what is the song they use in the tribute video for the eliminated girl.
I have been trying to look for it but cant.
So please, if you guys know, do let me know yeah!
Thanks a lot!
xoxo
Bastian.
I missed the show too. FOX can you please put it on the website???
If mary screams one more time i’ma ring her neck. She’s ruining my enjoyment of the show, why can’t she just cut the crap. I could name about 100 people and their friends that are sick and tired of her. Even the other judges block their ears, what the heck?!
What happened to sabra???
Loved Randi. Kupono was great but I don’t feel that he is as talented as the rest at this point. Randi was adorable and had such class at the elimination. I am happy that Evan is still in the mix, because he has that every guy look. I have been calling him Gene Kelly since he auditioned for last years show. Thank you SYTYCD for this show. Dancing such as this hasn’t been seen on TV for many years…if ever! Loving it!
This is a comment for Nigel. My wife and I are big fans of your show, but feel that it’s not fair to have only one winner. Rather, there should be one male champion and one female champion. The strengths the two genders bring to dance are too different to lump them into one judging. Please think about this for next season.
Weird question but does anyone know who makes the leotard Randi wore in practice…it was the black corset one? My sister dances and really wants the leotard for her birthday.
Comment For Dr. Nigel Lythgowe. (A suggestion actually) Once you get down to the “Top Ten” it seems most of the solos are in their “safe zone”. Why not raise the bar for solos and have the ladies learn one routine (choose a choreographer) and the guys another (from a different choreographer). Then the guest choreographer judge comments/critiques their dance. This forces them one more step out of their genre and provides something more to go on than just the “duos”.
A final comment. My wife has been watching the show since the first season…..she somewhat “forced” me into watching it. At first I was hardly engaged, however, as I began to see the real skill, athleticism, difficulty and interpretation rolled up as a “performance” I GOT it. Now I don’t miss it. Very impressive!

Sometimes I get annoyed with the judges. They never say anything critical about the choreographers, but sometimes the dance fails because of them/him/her. You always fault the dancers for not being perfect, but they can only do the dance steps they are given, to the music they are given, and it is sometimes not very good. Tonight there was a waltz that wasn’t really a waltz, was extremely slow, that was done very gracefully and, to my eyes, controlled. Yet you praised the choreographer and faulted the dancers. When a dance is exceptionally well done, it is almost always because it is extremely well choreographed. Be fair!
WOW!!! All I can say is that Ade and Melissa were awesome! I have watched the show from season 1 and I have enjoyed many dances. Season 2 performance with Travis & Heidi “Calling You” choreographed by Mia Michaels has always been my favorite piece; until last night (7-22-09 / “This Woman’s Work”). From the moment Ade & Melissa stepped out on that stage and started to dance, I began to cry and I didn’t stop until the commercial break. Tyce did a remarkable job coming up with this routine and the way Ade and Melissa danced it was unbelievable. Even my boyfriend was quite and amazed. I didn’t have a favorite until now, those two deserve to be the two finalist. I hope that we all can see that performance again some day. The dance moved me sitting in my home watching it on a television, I can only imagine what it was like to see it live. So You Think You Can Dance, please have that routine on the tour. It deserves to be seen by the whole world. For those of you who missed it, words cannot express how amazing it was. Thank you Tyce, Ade, & Melissa for making a statement and for moving me in such away that I will never forget. May God Bless all of you and Good Luck.
I love Kupono… i’m so sad that he’s gone… but cant wait to see him on tour…
Tonight was breath-taking… Kayla and Kupono (a.k.a. “Kaypono”) were my favorites since their auditions… and when they got paired up… I was ecstatic.
Unfortunately, Kupono left last week, but I feel so bad for my girl Kayla! She keeps on having to deal with the bottom 3 or 2 but she will always be, as called last week, “White lightning” which is very accurate.
Jason was perfect with the Bollywood routine he and Caitlin had performed the first week, but it was sad to see him go… I thought they would show Mary pinching his “puppy cheeks” at the end of the 100th episode tonight, but oh well.
I still dream of choreographing a Bollywood routine for the show ever since last season when Katie and Joshua performed the first-ever bollywood number that SYTYCD had ever had.
I’ll miss energetic, little hot-tamalee Jeanette, because she was fun and so cute… but it’s fate.
May “Adelissa” keep on making the judges cry and Jeanine and Brandon stay strong throughout the rest of the season. Good luck top 6!!!
Does anyone know where Kayla got the solo dress she wore on 7/22?
I have been watching this show since its inceptions and I have to say, not one dance has made me cry from the start until I saw tyce dirorio’s choreograpjy to Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work”… you know, I remember that song from the movie with Kevin Baker, She’s Having a Baby… the music moves me every time I hear it and I never thought I would see a dance to it that completely portrayed all the music was suppose to convey in its honesty. I have seen so many ridiculous choreogrphers be honored on this show, but NONE have moved me as much as this one has. I have been dancing ballet since my second grade and jazz or impressionist dance since I was in sixth grade. Every inch of my body, every ounce of my blood, and every pound of my bones moved with such intensity as I watched this dance. Diorio deserves much more than this show can showcase in his talents… he moves us to so much more than a commercial tv show can satisfy!!!
I am so upset that Janette was eliminated. This show intends to encourage an emotional connection to its contenders and then pays little attention to the intended devotion to their dancers. I called exactly 10 times trying to vote for Janette, but the line rang busy. They do not have enough lines to accommodate the volume of calls and therefore their results are inaccurate. When Nigel says, “American got it wrong,” I am insulted, because I tried to cast my vote, but was not allowed. I am wary of watching this show in the devoted manner that I have for the past 2 years if they are not going to invest in the true intention of their viewing audience.
Jason is gone, I can’t believe it. It should have been Evan, he has an amazing personality but just isn’t that entertaining for me. I love watching all the other males dance except Evan, he just doesn’t deliver it for me. I did love Jeanine and Brandons piece, I loved that choreographer. And Kayla and Jason’s zombie/monster number, it was very clever.
I know what some other people are saying about the lines being busy, I think if you call towards the end of the 2 hours you get through easier. I have had the line be busy as well and it’s frustrating because who has the time to sit there hitting redial. Not Me.
I was very disappointed with the eliminations, especially Janette. She is the most gifted all around dancer on that show, and one can tell it’s definitely a “favorite” dancer vote, not a “most gifted” dancer vote. There should be another way to eliminate dancers…make some kind of point system with points being awarded for number of votes cast by American audiences, and then points given by the judges for technique, etc. Only then will the eliminations be fair and consistent. Oh, and one other thing – since it is a vote by America, I truly believe the dancers are at the mercy of the choreographers. If they get a difficult/weird piece, they are liked less…hence fewer votes.
I can’t stand Mary she drives me insane her voice and her screaming someone PLEASE put her out of her pain. I like the show can’t take her.
It was tragic to let Randi go after the BUTT dance. She demonstrated an ability to adapt to a style that was more than awe inspiring. Not only was the musical score a smash hit, her ability to bring a seductive, creative and masterful performance to America was as much as we could dream for. The choreography was genius. We have seen some good dancers, but none compare with this performance and the girl “brought it” the entire time she was on the show. Back to the musical score, Koop Island Blues has become my all time favorite. Thanks for exposing me to music, which I live by, that I would have never known had it not been for the show. that is the positive in this performance.
