Executive Producer & Judge Nigel Lythgoe Talks About Adam Shankman & Season 6 Changes.

On a recent press call, Executive Producer and Judge Nigel Lythgoe discussed Adam Shankman, Season 6, and more.
Although Season 6 is the first fall season of So You Think You Can Dance, Nigel promises that they aren’t changing too much about the already successful summer seasons to cater to a fall crowd of viewers. One change that we’ve announced is the addition of Adam Shankman as a resident judge. That means Tabitha and Napoleon, Lil C, Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, etcetera will most likely not be sitting on the judges’ panel this year. Nigel said, “It’s always difficult to put them in because I want them choreographing, and the minute they choreograph, they’re not allowed to be a judge…We will still have an open chair. I would still like Paula Abdul to pop in. I would still like guest judges to pop in when they can. Jennifer Lopez has said how much she loves the program. I would love her to come in and sit down. We tried it with Ellen. It was very successful. I just don’t want four judges every week.”
With each season of So You Think You Can Dance, the judges always mention how the bar is constantly being raised. “The standard of dancing is just improving all of the time,” Nigel stated. “All I’m seeing is this exponential growth that, all of a sudden, we’ve brought street dancing and formally trained dancing together and it’s exploded. Whereas the formally trained dancers didn’t want to take chances, the street dancers will do anything and, therefore, they’re teaching the formally trained, and the formally trained are turning around and teaching the street dancers lines and elevation and things, and it’s absolutely fantastic to see. It’s a great joy for somebody that felt dancing was stagnant for so many years to see this happen, and I’ve really seen a huge growth in five years. A formally trained dancer would never, ever jump onto the back of their head from a standing start without hands. There has always been this fear and knowledge of ‘no, I’ll hurt myself if I do that,’ whereas an untrained dancer will just go for it. So mixing those two things together, we have something very exciting, which I think has brought integrity back into the world of dance and everybody realizes that you have to be an athlete nowadays to be a dancer.”
Nigel opened up about the dancers on Season 5 versus the dancers he hopes to see on Season 6. “I thought technically [the Season 5 dancers] were superb and I would like to certainly keep that standard, that level of dancing, but I would like whoever we have this year to bring personality with it and bring charisma.” Nigel admitted he’d be a very happy man if he can achieve the perfect combo of Season 4’s personalities with Season 5’s technique.
As you saw in the Season 6 premiere, a lot of talented tap dancers have auditioned this year. Nigel said that tap dancers and ballerinas have come out of the woodwork, possibly because they were inspired by Season 5 ballerina Melissa. Will So You Think You Can Dance see their first tapper in the Top 20? “I think two or three of them will possibly even get into the top 20. They’re that good,” Nigel shared.
Recently, it seems like America is having a love affair with dance. Nigel always talks about his goal to promote dance as an art form and make it entertaining. “To be instrumental in trying to bring that back is absolutely fantastic, and it’s not just in this country. [SYTYCD] is the number one show in Australia, and the number one show in Canada. It’s a global phenomenon at the moment…all different forms of dance are coming through around the world and it’s just been out of the spotlight for so long. So to be a part of that movement and feel instrumental in it, to be frank, is absolutely wonderful. I’m so passionate about it. I’m so pleased that we can even start charitable foundations now to bring dance to people who can’t afford it…I would love it to be a legacy that’s followed up on long after this program is gone.”

I think having the rotating guest judges is an extremely important part of the show. It’s been that way from the very beginning. Having three permanent judges will completely change the show, and it will change it for the worse. The judges determine who gets into the top 10 and also provide great feedback from differeing points of view. We will be losing a lot by only having Adam Shankman’s opinion to rely on. I’m extremely disapointed in So You Think You Can Dance for making this change. I was going to have a tough time fitting this show (one of my summer favorites) into my Fall schedule, and with the elimination of the guest judges in favor of Adam Shankman, I will probably stop watching altogether. There are just too many changes this Fall. Why mess with success?
Oh my gosh I love your show! I truly think it’s the best show on TV. But I have to comment about one thing that drives me insane…. I wonder if anyone else out there feels the same.
When you’re showing the dancers doing their thing on stage and you cut to the judges reactions in the middle of the routines, I want to lose my mind! I’m so in to what the dancer is doing, and it drives me crazy to break out of that groove.
I’m not really sure why you use that editing technique. I say: let us see the judges reactions AFTER the routine ends. They get their fair amount of time then. But while the dancer is doing his/her thing–I want to be 100% focused on the performance.
Thanks for allowing the fans to leave feedback. Wishing all of the contestants and judges the best!
Nigel,
I really have to say that there have been times when you have made comments on the show that strike me as fairly prejudiced and archaic. On tonight’s show (aired 9/23), for instance, when you were commenting on the ‘cross between crump and tap being crap’- that was sooooo rude and crude. In a previous season you expressed your disdain for seeing two males dancing together (though this season you tempered your comments more so). And last but not least, you also have expressed how hip hop dance was really not really your thing.
Yes, I can appreciate differences of opinion, but when it comes to dance (and other art forms) I would like to imagine that artists carry different eyes than the general audience would. Don’t you see the beauty in things outside of typically accepted standards? They carry the voices of those whose paths in life some of us will never know. It’s a blessing that they can be shared with us. There was beauty in the crump routine- so much beauty- just as there was in the male/male routines. You sound sometimes like your living in the dark ages.
Bottom line: you are entitled to your opinions, if you don’t like the dances for technical reason than say so, but please (recognizing how many are watching this show) temper them with tolerance and grace. This society could use so much more of that.
I really think that if Mary is going to laugh at people while they pour their hearts out on the stage she might want to take a look in the mirror and lay off the botox. Talk about something to laugh at!
Hi Nigel
I always appreciate your comments, favorable or critical as they appear to come from a sincere desire to mix appreciation of good dancing with entertainment. The show is highly addictive, entertaining and educational, especially for all us “wannabe’s”. Really enjoying the addition of ethnic dance, bollywood etc. as it not only provides needed variety but showcases international styles.
I would like to offer several observations. . .
1)I agree that cutting to judge’s reactions during any dance is frustrating.
2)If you’re going to let poor dancers audition for humor, don’t laugh at them while they are performing (Mary). It’s humiliating and unneccessary. The voice over provides enough insight.
3)Adam is the reason I stopped watching sytycd Canada, he has gone way over the top to intensely annoying. I liked guest choreographers as judges, different viewpoints.
4)Who are the dancers on the intro every show – would like to see them featured – we’ve watched them for 5 seasons now.
5)When the rehearsal features dancers trying to master a tough move, it detracts from the actual performance as we’re waiting for that one move. Could this be incorporated into the judges comments after the performance instead?
6)Education is appreciation – more comments from the experts on technicalities of different dance styles. Mary does this well with ballroom.
Keep up the good work.
Yeah I agree with Jen F. I’m sure you are trying to promote the “celebrity” of the judges by showing their reactions, but you do get enough air time anyway. It would be great if you would do what Jen F says or at least put the reactions in a box in the corner and give the dancers their moment.
I was really confused with the one of the routines on Wednesday night’s auditions show in Boston. I believe it was the first dancer, with the plaid pants and bow tie that all 3 judges thought had just an amazing routine, that he was very talented and that the routine was so unique.
I wasn’t sure at first if the judges were being serious or making fun of him because it almost seemed as if he was making fun of the routine from Season 5 that was performed to the exact same song with very similar movements. I loved that Season 5 routine and I don’t think this guy was actually dancing, I think he was just mimicking the routine from Season 5.
Did anyone else notice this? I love the show and so does my 2 year old son…I hope it inspires him to be a dancer (don’t tell my husband)!
Okay – this is completely driving me crazy! At the end of the show during the vegas montage there is a song playing in the background – on this website it is called Rise but no artist. I have been searching and searching and cannot find out who it is! The words that you can hear are close to this:
I’ve been workin
I’ve been waitin – For a moment I can call my own. then something else then we’re gonna (or going) rise
I love it and would love to know what it is. Please post if you know
Oh absolutly love this show. I watched it for the first time last season and I am completely hooked. I think I like it better than American Idol and that is saying a lot for me!!
Keep up the great work guys -
Just a note to the producer. Love your American Show .. the Canadian one started great, but has become crude. It’s hitting out local papers as parents are outraged that blatant sexual positions including felatio are depicted through dance. We will continue to watch your American production, but the Canadian one has lost our respect. Please re think what you allow in the Canadian version. Yes, there are fewer restrictions in Canada, but that’s no reason to take advantage in promoting pornographic dance. I just can’t get over how such a wholesome “art promoting” show has gone down this road. It’s so degrading to the world of dance.
I completely agree with EVERYTHING Gay said above. I really enjoyed hearing the different choreographers point of views. I understand that you want them to continue to choreograph, but I absolutely think it brings so much to the show to hear the feedback from the choreographers.
I do think it would be great to bring in celebrity judges like Jennifer Lopez. I’d rather see that happen then have the same three judges all the time. Please rethink the judge thing.
This is the only show I Tivo. It’s also the only show I care about on TV. I’m so happy to have it during the winter season, I hope you can make a Spring season as well. I love this show and I love the exposure you give to the world. Please keep this going season after season.
PS… Fox allows viewing of many other shows after they aired, but SYTYCD is not one of them, sometimes my Tivo doesn’t work with my cable and I miss a Wed or a Thurs episode, can you please work out something with Fox to be able to view it on line the next day?
I love So You Think You Can Dance…the performances make me laugh, cry, think…..I am so happy that this show has brought dance back into the mainstream and peoples lives. I have seen this great dance troupe from England called DIversity. I think they won Britains Got Talent this year. I think American audiences would absolutely love their performance and spirit and sometimes you have had other dancers, singers on….Think about it….
thanks,
Mary H.
Love the show, but can’t STAND Mary Murphy’s screaming! Please make her STOP! It is really unnecessary and detracts from the rest of the show.
I would love to see SYTYCD shows added to the website, too!
Nigel
You have to do something about the voting on the American show.
Those people who voted thousands of times for a dancer have distorted what the results should have been. Permit only the number of voted per phone line as there are dancers to vote on that week. Did Janette Manrara ever get screwed on season 5.
You lost your best dancer to nitwits who act like hackers.
DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT NOW!
Also, using only Adam Shankman at the 3rd judge is a big mistake. The only worse thing you could have done was to make Lil C the permanent judge. That guy is verbose and boring at the same time.
I liked having Mia, Debbie and Tyce as guest judges.
By the way, if you can’t control your phone voting, then use the Canadian system where the judges decide who get eliminated, not the fools with the busiest fingers.
I think having Adam S. as a judge is a great idea. I really enjoy him. At the same time, I would miss Mia and the other choreographers as guest judges. No Jennifer Lopez or other such celebrities who are there for the sake of name-recognition only, please! I think that’s a sellout and it would make me stop watching the show.
Instead, bring back some of the previous dancers who were on the show. In particular, I would love to see Hok, Joshua, Twitch, Katee and Mark & Kupono(from Hawaii) as well as Jason who did the Bollywood routine. Also, bring back Ade, Evan and Melissa and let them dance on the show as competitors or guest dancers again. They are the best.!
[...] The rest is here: So You Think You Can Dance – Executive Producer & Judge Nigel … [...]
Hi, Nigel. How are you? I’ve enjoyed your show since season 2 and have been hooked ever since. I love Adam Shankman as well. I think having him as a permenant judge is a great idea. I will however miss Mia, Tyce and Debbie as judges.
P.S. I love Cat Deeley! I would love to meet her (and the other judges) in person someday.
Nigel,
This may not be the appropriate section to post this but, I suggest that you should also throw in some more twist to your show by adding exotic categories for dancers to pick, like Tribal dance (african hunters, pacific islanders, festivals, etc) and folk/cultural dances from different continents like Singkil of the Philippines.
I understand this may bring up issues like tainting the image of certain nations by tweaking or modifying or altering the structure of a particular cultural dance, but you can avoid it by hiring choreographers who belong to a particular race a dance represents.
I have watched that Bollywood routine performed by Katee and Joshua, and it was fantastic. The dance was more of cultural Indian, but there was a modern twist to it yet still loved by many. Hope you could add more entries to dance genres in the next season.
More power to you all.
Absolutely agree with keeping variety with the third judge.
Absolutely agree on limiting showing judge’s faces/comments during performances – or placing a box in one part of the screen as mentioned above.
Absolutely agree on wanting access to the shows after they’d played. (Is there any way we could get DVR’s of each season – or replays of shows on the website?)
Absolutely agree at how much I have enjoyed this show over the years. It’s the only show I watch on TV – appreciate the genuine passion for dance and high quality of work that’s shown. Yes, sometimes judges’ comments are not appropriate – but clearly the judges adore the art form as much as I do, treat the dancers as human beings, and are authentic on the show. I also love Cat’s genuine personality and joy. Please keep it this way. Keep it real.
I agree that having a rotating third judge adds interest to the show. I love Adam and I think he’s one of the least biased guest judges but that doesn’t mean I don’t want the differing opinions every week. I hope this is only a temporary thing and that the summer season of the show will go back to a rotating third judge.
I would love to be able to BUY the seasons of the So You Think You Can Dance somewhere on DVD. I know because of copyrights for the music that this might be difficult to put into action, but I have a feeling it would pay off. I’m tired of watching youtube videos of the routines I love!
I love the show. I’ve been a huge Jeanine and Jason fan and last season I was a huge Courtney fan. I personally am not a fan of the idea of also doing a fall So You Think You Can Dance.
First of All, Everyone is still so excited about season 5. My friends and I are still sitting in the car talking about that number and oh my god how i loved that part and how amazing our favorite dancers are. It’s so hard now to get into the new season. I just saw the tour show and people are still going to be seeing the season 5 tour when were into season 6 top 20. I don’t think it’s fair to either set of dancers. For the season 5 crew it’s about people have moved on and they didn’t have to amount to time to shine as everyone else. And for season 6 people are having a hard time moving on and accepting them as the new set of SYTYCD dancers. To me it feels like it’s not real, like these auditions aren’t real SYTYCD dancers.
Also, during the fall things are crazy. The biggest fan base it teenage/preteen girls. We have school. When as in the summer I got home from dance at 10 and watched it recorded, during the school year it’s so hard to keep up with it.
Last but not least, i think it will loose appeal to people when it’s on all the time. It will get a little old. And there’s no anticipation of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE IS COMING BACK!!! (like usual) .
Not to be prudes, but what was up with fox not pixelating the pantiless contestant who made it to Vegas on tonight’s show. Girl in the white dress dropped to the stage then showed her altogethers in plain view of the camera. Slow motion confirmed, no panties, no pixels.
Ihave been an avid fan of sytycd for about 4 seasons. I truly love the show. One thing about it I love is the emotions from the “true” dancers. I’m a big smushball just like Mary & Mia! I am also a Christian. I believe that God gave us each a talent, & He expects us to use that talent to glorify His name. In the episode aired on 9/29/09, there was a young man named Thomas from Scottsdale, GA who danced to Israel Houghton’s worship song. I truly believe that Thomas danced to glorify the name of God. I understand that this is a competition, but I feel that he came to the show to show God how much he appreciates his talent. The only reason I am writing is because I was offended by your comment, Nigel, about Thomas “losing” it during his performance. Based on his story, he has a lot to be “losing” it for. Your comment about him remembering who he was dancing for was disrespectful not only to him, but to the millions of God-fearing Christians who may be your viewers. I’m sure you have no idea, but we Christian “lose it” when we feel the presence of God. I don’t care where I am or what I do when I “lose it”.I can’t help it when I need to tell God how greatful I am. I have enough faith in MY God to know He is going to take care of whatever situation I’m in. He spared my life after having a stroke @ 29. I have a lot to thank Him for. I’m sure that young man does, also. I don’t know if you’ve ever been so full of spirit to the point where all you can do is raise your hands & say “Thank You God”. That is what that young man did on that stage. I think he did a magnificent job. He touch my heart. I believe he reached a lot of souls today & brought some people to Christ. So, I feel it is my duty as a Christian to speak on this matter. You may or may not agree with me, but I know I would have a heavy heart if I didn’t address this. Thank you for your time in reading this. Have a blessed day. Hollaaa…
I saw the show tonight and had to post a comment about a certain dancer named Thomas. Nigel was worried about his “praise dancing.” I am no expert on dancing, but I do believe the judges have done an exceptional job educating us on what to watch for in a dancer. I cried from the inside out when I saw Thomas dance. Nigel did not like it when Thomas gave his dance to God or a higher power rather than give himself to the crowd or the judges. From what I have seen on previous shows the most important thing is to give your dance period. The judges made a great point tonight to not remain emotionless when you dance. These dancers dance for cancer, for themselves, for the judges, for drugs, for rock and roll and I understand that to a point they are doing these things for the crowd. However, I’ve seen many dancers that had no idea a crowd existed during their dance because they were so enveloped in the cause of their dance and they were never criticised for that. I saw that happen here with Thomas and it was beautiful and touching. I would never have seen it if I had not watched So You Think You Can Dance for the past 5 years. I do appreciate what the show has brought to us all and would like to give my thanks.
Hey FOX, next time, use pixelation!
Nigel, in the show last night a dancer named Thomas was dancing and showing his complete emotion to God, for whom he danced…just as you have asked the couples who are choreographed to dance – ripping clothes, kissing, feeling each other – doing so to show their complete emotion for that song, or story, which was choreographed. And, I might add…not “looking” at you, but looking at each other to complete this task. When Thomas reached up to God (and not to you) this brought chills to me – he WAS the dance, the music, the praise that you so often want those who “make it” to show completely. I feel that you were very disrespectful and I was shocked to hear your feelings toward this subject and this wonderful dancer when he finished.
great show!
I agree with the voting on allowing only a certain number of votes per phone number. I think Janette got screwed out of being in the final round last season.
Well Nigel, I hope you get this… I have beening to say this for awhile. I think that if you make the ballerina’s do hip hop and other styles… why then do the hip hoper’s and street dancers well all the dancers not have to do ballet.. I think that they should have to… even if it’s not swan lake.. and on flat… all the dancer’s should have to be required to step out of the ‘boxes’… Thank you..
Nicole~
I’ve watched every episode of SYTYCD since the first season. It’s my favorite show of ALL TIME. I don’t think it’s fair to judge the show this season JUST YET. I haven’t watched one episode yet because I don’t like to watch until all the idiots are done trying out knowing they don’t know how to dance. Besides the fact that it’s up against America’s Next Top Model and Biggest Loser and has even gone up against Dancing with the Stars. I think when it gets down to the Top 20 more people will watch – and I certainly wish it wasn’t up against two of my other favorites. I’m definitely getting a DVR.
I AM FINE WITH WHOEVER SITS IN THE JUDGE’S CHAIR, IT’S ALL ENTERTAINING TO ME, HOWEVER, S.Y.T.Y.C.D. NEEDS TO START SHOWING ON THE TV SCREEN WHAT ARTIST & SONG IS PLAYING IN THE AUDITIONS AS WELL AS THE FINALS. I HAD HEARD SO MANY KILLER SONGS TONIGHT & DON’T HAVE A CLUE WHO THE MUSIC ARTIST WAS…LET’S NOT FORGET ABOUT THE MUSIC EITHER. I’M SURE THERE ARE MILLIONS OF FANS WHO FEEL THE SAME WAY…PLEASE TRY TO MAKE AN EFFORT IN DOING SO…THANKS A ZILLION.
Jones said it much better than I
One thing I noticed tonight (on the 30th) that Mary is starting to scream again. Last season I gave her three high-pitched screams before changing the channel–am seriously thinking about giving her only one. I realize she is very enthusiastic about some dancers, but last season she did it all the time, and I rather hope she doesn’t do it so much this reason. It distracts from the show and the dancers, at least for us watching on television.
I do want to hear the judges’ comments, or I would stick plugs in my ears once the dances are over. I’m not joking.
K78Fw7 I want to say – thank you for this!
What is the song in the background when the contestant 34817 was talking about his upbringing?
Thanks
I am extremely disappointed about the lack of a consistently rotating judge this season. It’s always a good thing to have fresh opinions and points of view so that the dancers are able to hear from as many people as possible. I think that you risk not letting the dancers grow as much through the judging process as they would otherwise through this choice. I think that as the competition goes on, we’re going to hear the same things from the same people about the same dancers over and over. Plus, you lose a lot of the entertainment factor for the fans. It’s exciting to see who is in the guest chair from week to week. Having said that, I love the show and will continue to watch. I just wish this change was not happening (nothing personal Mr. Shankman).
p.s. I caught the tour show last night in Columbus. AMAZING!!!! Thank you for making it possible for fans to have that kind of experience. I was SUPER happy and impressed.
I agree with many of the comments here. Having a rotating judge is part of what makes it an interesting show. They come from different perspectives and it allows the choreographers have a say in which dancers stay and which ones go. It also allows the audience to get to know them.
My other question was: will there ever be a So You Think You Can Dance world competition. I know there are other SYTYCD shows from other countries, it would be interesting to see the nations dance together… if possible?
Congratulations to Adam Shankman on being made a permanent judge! He is a joy to watch on television, and I hope he continues doing a great job on the program. However, I do agree with everyone and how it might be a mistake to not have a rotating judge on the program. A rotating judge is what breaks the monotony and brings a fresh point of view each week. Food for thought.
As much as I love the show, I feel like the integrity of the whole thing has been slipping. Someone once said that this program has become a caricature of itself, and I think that summary aptly describes what has happened here. There have been a lot of false praise and shouting for mediocre routines and dancing. These past two seasons, lackluster performances by judge favorites have been praised to no end. It seems as though you’re pushing America to vote for the one you want champion.
The choreographers also seem to never do any wrong. It is always the dancer at fault for failing a routine. There are times when the whole routine just sucks, and I think the judges should nail the choreographers for doing a bad job as well.
The dancers come on this program to grow as individuals and as dancers. So most of all, I wish that the judges gave constructive criticism instead of just screaming and shouting, “THAT WAS AMAZING,” every week. I want you all to use technical jargon and complicated words that confuse the mass public, but assure us that you are all experts in this field. I want you to correct the dancer when they’re not fully extending their legs, or have limp wrists, or need to do so-and-so.
I don’t think Mr. Nigel Lythgoe would actually read this, but here’s hoping. Thank you for bringing such a wonderful television show onto my television, and I hope that will capture that artistic, purposeful essence that I know this program can have.
I have thought that the use of one rotating judge has been crucial to keep the cross discipline enthusiasm and fairness. I particularly was pleased to see judges disagree. The fear is that with the same 3 permanent judges, the expectations, and appreciation will become predictable. In Nigel’s comments, the growth due to differences is valued. I know the differences in choreographers is valued, but the comments and critiques by experts in each discipline have been outstanding, and have taught me what to watch for. Mia, Tyce, Lil C, and all the others have added very much to SYTYCD being the best of its genre, by so far it’s sensational.
So You Think You Can Dance is television at its best. It is educational, entertaining, and enjoyable. The current format has taught me more about dance than I thought possible. I have been an engineer for 40 years, and understand the discipline, balance and creativity that goes into finding new solutions to troubling technical problems, but never saw the discipline, synergy, or use of language in dance before. I just thought dance was sometimes beautiful to watch and sometimes incomprehensible. SYTYCD, haas taught us all that there is not one language of dance, but many, and that each dance is a composition using words, phrases and grammer to artistically express an idea, in the way and engineer uses technical words, charts, and descriptions to convey his vision. I have found the rotating judges to be my interpreters for the languages that I have not understood, and attribute their passion and diversity for awakening an appreciation for all the forms ,(languages) of dance. I understand the difficulty in logistics of a rotating seat, but please value the diversity in judging, the way you have taught us all to value the diversity of styles.
I agree with Nicole about the other dancers doing hip hop. I felt like Melissa was favored by the judges in Season 5, and I didn’t think she was as good as some of the other dancers like Janette. How can I believe that the dance styles are picked “randomly” when Melissa was the only one to get ballet? One of the reasons I love this show (and hate American Idol) is that SYTYCD seems more about helping dancers grow instead of humiliating them. I think the comments have always been constructive. I don’t find the bad dancing amusing or entertaining. Maybe if you stopped airing the bad auditions, you wouldn’t get the people auditioning just to get on TV and goof off. It would save everyone’s time, leave more room to air good dancers who auditioned. Gotta agree with everyone about Mary’s screaming. Maybe it was funny for a season or two, but the stupid “Hot Tamale Train” needs to take a rest. Love Adam, he’s my favorite guest judge. Little C never says much that’s actually valuable. I know it’s not practical, but I think every dance style needs a judge trained in that style to judge the dance. I could not care less about the judges reactions during the dancing, though I do appreciate the replay of the part being referenced when the judges are talking. For the solos, can we get rid of that awful “shooby dooby” part that signals the end? It never fits with anyone’s dance or music, and it just looks weird when the dancers try to dance to it.
Oh, and PLEEEAAAASE don’t put Paula Abdul up there as a guest judge!!! Has anyone noticed how messed up she looked on Idol. There’s a reason she left!
How quickly he forgets. Season 1 had a tap dancer in their finalists…they only had a top 16 rather than a top 20 but he should not be so quick to forget. Tap is a true art form and should be included as a style for the contestants to learn like ballroom, lyrical, ballet, bollywood…etc.
Why would you want Paula Abdul to be a judge. It would be too distracting to have her on because she is always so spacey.
Tap is something that you can’t just pick up and not look (not to mention sound) like crap doing. I think that’s why they’re shying away from it for everyone. And I know that people want others to have to do ballet to make it “fair”. But seeing people try do it and not look like a hot mess would personally make me cringe. But I do realize that this is probably true for many other viewers who have trained in other genres. As for Mary, I think the dancers like the “stupid ” Hot Tamale Train and would be disappointed to see it go. (She could tone down the screaming a little though, I will admit. Maybe get her a train whistle??) And same for the “shooby dooby” stuff; without it, it just wouldn’t be SYTYCD. Just my opinions…take them for what they’re worth.
I love the show and watch it all the time. You have a challenge this Fall, competing with so many programs, so good luck!
I have two constructive criticism comments:
One: to echo another response on here, show the entire dances without breaking for judge’s reactions. I watch the show for the dancing and want to see a lot of it.
Two: Show the dancers in their own style more often. Their solos are way too short and it is boring to watch a ballroom dancer without a partner, so let them dance with a partner to showcase their talent.
My favorite part of the show is the extraordinary choreography, coupled with good music. I have a hard time thinking the show is fair when a good dancer gets poor choreography. That will make or break them. Is there anyway to make that more fair?
I hope the show continues to improve and stay on the air for a long time! I am so glad that during the shows when you show auditions you focus more on the good dances than the bad ones! We all like a good laugh, but sometimes it just gets old and annoying and people are just trying to get air time. Don’t give it to them! Give it to the GOOD dancers…
OH, and I agree!! Get rid of the Shooby, shooby during the solos. Instead give them more time to dance their own style.
I like watching so you think you can dance. One thing that I would like to say that I see is kind of unfair and would like to tell the producers and judges is that, I understand that the show is to find talented dancers however there are various types of dancing. When a hip hop dancer performs and sent to choreography they have to dance in couples dancing and a dance style that would be difficult for them to do. Saying this a hip hop dancer is at a disadvantage from the get go. I would like to see them send those that dance traditionally to be sent to hip hop dancing choreography and hip hop dancers send to traditional choreography. That would be fair!!!!!
I”m just sayin Nigel, “Give Paskell a shot”
and oh yeah, THAT WAS RAW SWAGGER!
Get rid of cut to judges!!!!!!
Don’t ridicule bad auditions – just don’t air it.
Constructive criticism during top 20 is fine.
Adam S is good but I love seeing Tyce and Mia on weeks that they don’t choreograph ( maybe alternate those two)
Yes, I would also like to echo the comments of Jen and others! In fact, I just remarked to my husband during last night’s show that “I WISH THEY WOULDN’T CUT AWAY TO THE JUDGES WHILE SOMEONE IS DANCING!!!” That’s been driving me crazy, too!
Been watching the show faithfully since Season 3. Can’t dance a lick, but LOVE the show!
Don’t know how the Shankman decision will play out, but I’ll be watching either way.
I’ve been a huge fan of the show from the moment I set eyes on it in season 3, and even since then there have been some changes for the better and changes for the worse. I’m sorry to say that I feel keeping three stagnant judges is for the worse.
I think that having a rotating judge brings in new viewpoints into the rotation. There’s a different chemistry to the judges every week, just as there is something new brought up for the dancers. Having a hip hop judge, a contemporary judge, a jazz judge… it adds new flair to the reviews that you won’t have when it’s only the same three every week. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t feel that Nigel and Mary shouldn’t be on the panel every week – they are really good for keeping consistence in voting. I think that the third judge should still be rotational
On that note – I hope that there is very good quality to Season 6. It certainly looks like we have very good dancers coming in.
Hi from Montreal,
I just want to suggest an idea.
I believe it would be nice to have something to help growth the group dancers community as well as individual like SYTYCD do right now.
SYTYCD (GROUP) maybe.
DOC. Nigel L. you have a brilliant mind, I am sure you can see the good behind this idea.
HOW DARE YOU NIGEL!!! I was watching the episode where Russell Ferguson (the Krumper) was on. He danced that routine BEAUTIFULY!!!!!! It gave me chills. He is a very talented, and likeable guy. For you to make the joke about “Have you infused Krump and tap?”, and Russell humbley answered “Yes” to you, only for you to DISRESPECT him and his style of dance, by saying, “Yes, it’s called KRAP!!!”. The judges got the biggest laugh off of that. Anyone could see that it bothered Russell, but he was not in any position to tell you what he really thought! Also, to insinuate that after he did a MARVELOUS job on the ballroom section of the tryouts, that SURELY, he couldn’t have done it on his own, because he’s just a stupid “KRUMPER”, so you made the DISRESPECTFUL comment to him, once again, that Iveta must have surely helped him through it. Any idiot could see that this guy is trained! What is wrong with you!! I, a dancer myself, and a veteran of the U.S. Army, have been watching the show since the beginning, and I’ve heard you guys make off color jokes like that before, it has always bothered me, (like the other night when Mary asked that African-American guy who was ripping off his shirt, where was he going with that style, over to his AUNTIES HOUSE??) I see that you Nigel demand the upmost respect of everyone around you on the show. I guess you feel like you dont have to return the favor! Just because that style of dance is not yours, and you CLEARLY don’t understand it, THAT IS NO REASON to disrespect others that are skilled in it. I would hate to stop watching the show because you like to disrespect defenseless people. I love Russell already and I know tons of other people that do too! You owe him an apology!!!!SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!
It was sad to see Ryan Kasprzak cut last night…but think it was planned from the time he auditioned. It was obvious last season that the judges prefer “America’s Best Dancer” to the reality of “America’s Favorite Dancer” and didn’t agree with Evan Kasprzak making it to the final four. Too bad. While we, the audience votes, do appreciate technique and execution…it’s entertainment we value most.
Nigel has completely lost his mind. Not having Mia, Debbie, Tyce and the other choreographers as judges is a huge mistake. Ellen Degeneres’ presence on just that one episode last season was a painful disaster. I had to fast forward through it. Jennifer Lopez and, god forbid, Paula Abdul will be even worse. We want to hear what the choreographers have to say, not what celebrities (who are no longer able to perform said choreography (if in fact they ever could)) think about it.
Seriously. If I can’t hear from Mia and Debbie and can only hear from Mary and Nigel then I will probably be making a different viewing choice.
1. I’m ok with Adam being a judge. I enjoy most of the judges most of the times. Adam isn’t my favorite, but I have no complaints against him.
2. I really don’t enjoy watching the judges laugh at bad auditions. I understand that they see a lot of them, and eventually you need an outlet, but if when you air those auditions to add drama, I ignore it and often FF until the end of it.
3.The “praise dancing” by Thomas: I am a completely committed Christian and loved what he did, but I do understand what Nigel was saying and I thought he said what needed to be said in a very respectful way. Thank you Nigel for not backing down from your professional thoughts on the matter just because it was a touchy subject. I can respect that.
4. Ryan. Seriously. What do I say? Like many others, I adore him. I understand why you cut him, so I’m not fighting your reasons, but if enough people show support, will you please consider a way to bring him on the show somewhere this Top 20 season in any way, shape or form? I would love to see his Dance For Life on the show (it would be for a great cause), or something else of his…. anything. Please.
5. I don’t mind watching the judges reactions during auditions, but I wouldn’t complain if they didn’t show.
I have been watching since Season 2 and have thoroughly enjoyed the show though I will admit that Season 5 did not hold my attention as I felt like a lot of the choreography (not all, of course) was weak or played to the strengths of the dancers. I feel like the last couple seasons have started to play more to the dancers than to the choreographers in some ways and would love to see the dancers have to challenge themselves to dance a different genre while incorporating their strengths instead of having choreography custom fit to the dancer. I think the best dances I have seen in the past three seasons have been those where the choreographers forced the dancers to challenge themselves.
Also, someone mentioned earlier about the choreographers affecting the dancers. I don’t know that Phillip Chbeeb would have lasted much longer but I felt like the folk dance he and his partner were given was very corny and hurt his chance to go a little further. Just one example.
One thing I have noticed too is inconsistency in the comments. Sometimes dancers are praised for following what the choreographers have given them, even if the choreography is not exceptional. At other times the dancers are criticized because the choreography is bad. Also comments like this with wardrobe. If there is no choice by the dancers in choreography or costume, it seems like it would be best not to criticize those elements in terms of the dancers themselves. It gets frustrating to see how the inconsistencies taint people’s views of the dancers themselves.
I also agree with previous comments about the amount of Mary’s screams, the laughing at the dancers/belittling them (as opposed to criticizing the dance), and talking through the feedback or dance segments.
And, finally, just a thought. I think it would be interesting to have a “challenge” for the dancers/choreographers where each pair, or individual, is given the same song but choreographs/is choreographed in their genre for that song.
Thanks for an amazing show! Whatever happens, I love to watch this program!
I absolutely love the show and have watched from the beginning!
I love it so much that I have to comment…I agree with many others that making Adam a permanent judge is a HUGE mistake that will destroy one of my favorite aspects of the show! No disrespect to Adam; I LOVE the rotation of choreographer/judges. It keeps things fresh and gives the dancers and the viewers a better variety of opinions and critique. Please don’t screw this up, Nigel! I also agree about keeping the camera on the dancers during their entire performance – we’ll hear the judges’ reaction AFTER, no? I read today that Mia is no longer with the US show and I’m heartbroken and inconsolable If it’s your fault, Nigel, fire yourself and then beg for Mia’s forgiveness. She is simply the BEST personality on the entire show. I for one will miss her terribly and for whatever reason she’s gone, I wish her only the best in her future endeavours. This is a great show and it will remain so if Nigel doesn’t screw it up with more bright ideas like the ones forementioned. I adore Mary and all of the choreographers! Keep up the good work and major kudos to Tyce!
Please tell Mary to stop screaming. I love the show but will only watch it after I’ve Tivo’d it so that I can fast forward through her comments. I would love to hear what she has to say I just can’t stand to hear her scream.
I think that you should have an update show to let us know what past contestants are doing and how their careers are going. We know about the obvious ones that are on dancing with the stars, but what about everyone else.
Please keep the rotating judge! I enjoy hearing all different critiques of the dancers and think it will get boring have the same three judges all the time. I also do NOT want to see celebrity judges. I thought Ellen was HORRIBLE when she appeared on Season 5. If a judge is not a dancer themselves, they have no business sitting there in judgement of the dancers. Please. The rotating judges is one of the things that make SYTYCD leaps and bounds better than American Idol. Three stagnant judges plus celebrity guest judges sounds way too much like American Idol. While still a popular show, no doubt, everyone I have spoken to about the two agree that SYTYCD is by far the better show. Let’s keep it that way. I’m considering not watching AI this year because Ellen was just that terrible. Ugh.
I think having Adam as a resident judge is a good idea. Having all 3 spots taken though? Not so much. Frankly, I cannot stand Mary Murphy as a judge. Her voice makes me want to change the channel most of the time. I say leave the third spot open, and rotate the last one like it has been, but with more of a variety than last year. I mean come on, Kayla in the bottom every week and yet she was saved every time? Even beating Jeanette who had never been in the botom. The judging in the show really needs a change up.
Dear Nigel,
I love your show so much. It’s always a great inspiration for me to work harder to improve my dancing.
I study in NYC and I’m surprised that my favorite contemporary teacher has never been in your show: Brice Mousset. He has the best contemporary class in New York. He is so popular here in the city, we all love him. He always teaches us that art can be entertainment and vice and versa. He is so passionate that it is impossible to not be passionate in return. He manages to take the best from us. You should meet Brice Mousset, he would be a perfect addition in the show. His movement and choreographies are refreshing and fun.
And I forgot, He is french, that would be a 1st in SYTYCD, a frenchy!!! lol
So many of the comments say the same thing, respect the dancers, quiet Mary down, keep the rotating judges. I agree with all that and more. As for celebrity judges why on earth would you have Ellen? It isn’t a comedy show, it is a talent show that means more than can be described to the dancers. I have seen Ellen as a guest judge on shows and it was not a pretty site. AI will suffer for bringing her on; don’t do that to SYTYCD. Adam is great but the other rotating judges such as Mia and Tyce will truly be missed. Their comments add so much.
Hey! Nygel ever look at Tice Diorio you ever notice that he gives the Eagle Eye . when looking at a contestant he dose.
Got another Tice Diorios’ Nick Name Eagle Eyes.
I love this show!! One of my favorites by far! And I’m so excited for the real good stuff to start next week!
The one change that I’m so disappointed in, which I noticed in the previews for next week, is the stage!!! I loved that the stage was the same that all the seasons dancers have danced on! Plus, I thought the huge LED screen on the back wall during the finale was sooooo distracting! It took away from the dancers! I was noticing what was going on there way more than the dancers themselves! And I was very upset to see that big screen back with the new stage! I hope you don’t decide to put big distracting lights and backdrops on it during the routines!
And I’m so sad that I just learned Mia won’t be choreography! Her routines are some of my favorites! You’ll be missed!
Hello.
Read through comments and agree:
1. Please keep rotating judges. Adam is a funny guy but he is too overwhelming. (I can imagine his reactions every time Billy Bell performs.)
2. Guest judges are welcome if they have something to do with dancing.
3. Throw in a bit of tech info on how dancers performed and what they did wrong. a few sketches. it is good for other dancers and for general audience to hear that judges talk business without using infinite flow of adjectives.
Disagree:
Let Mary scream. It’s always fun and it comes from the heart.
Hello Dr. Nigel, firstly I love love your show SYTYCD. Season 3 is my favorite to date, while season 4 was most entertaining and season 5 more technically riveting. Criticisms: Please continue to have a rotating panel of judges, it adds to the entertainment and knowledge base of the viewers when different genres are represented. I love Mary’s screaming and so do the contestants. I did not enjoy the final episodes of season 5 staged at the new theater because the lighting was obscuring the dancers faces and not fully allowing the camera to capture the dancing from varying angles. The only routine with great lighting and camera direction was Mia’s piece with Kayla and Jeanine. Please let the lighting and stage direction be on par with the original stage if not better.
Have a blessed season 6
Keep bringing dances from around the world. So many styles unexplored! I’m a bit tired of seeing Westcoast Swing…How about Lindy Hop or Charleston or Balboa!
Holly, I know you will watch SYTYCD, there is nothing better on, Adam is more than qualified and gives a great critiques. You will only be depriving yourself of great dancing and then you will miss the love dance brings.
I think that replacing the guest judge with Adam Shankman is a loss to the show. I agree that the different judges provide more insightful and varied feedback as well as making the competition more fair for the dancers. I know Nigel wants to bring in certain celebrities as guest judges, but these celebrities do not have the training, experience and insight as the previous guest judges like Debbie Allen, Mia Michaels, and Tabitha & Napoleon. This is a bad decision for the show.
So I don’t get it, if there are only going to be 3 permanent judges (Nigel, Mary, and Adam), with the exception of Paula Abdul if she wants to come around (as evidenced by the empty chair with her name on it that Nigel displayed tonight), then why are there “Judge Bios” for Debbie, L’il C, and Mia etc.? Are they still going to judge? Also, Mia announced that she has resigned from SYTYCD so I guess she won’t be judging or choreographing. Sad to see her and her choreography go, but looking forward to a great season.
FIRST AND FOREMOST—NO PAULA!!!! It is bad enough that you are stopping the rotating judges and factor in the loss of Mia, one of the best choreographers to grace this show. I am a football type of guy, but started watching this show with my girlfriend and love it now. With that being said, I think the changes that are being introduced this season will not benefit the show.
Well, I have to answer the question about the set. With the exception of the one still image for a background in the contemporary it was to distracting. It looked like a selection of screen savers, and drew attention from the dance. The camera angles where limited, and it felt claustrophobic. The old set served you better.
Dear Nigel,
I started watching your show during the Joshua season and I fell in love with your show. You and the judges are so real and honest and I love hearing your responses. I can tell you are going for a mix of personality and talent this year. That is great. I am right now watching the get to know the dancers episode of season six.
SOMETHING IS WRONG! The new stage/studio does not lend itself to wide angle close shots. The star quality does not reach through the screen. Something is lost. The space is too far. The intimacy of the prior studio is gone. I know it is not the dancers.
I love you guys and your show.
WM
Two points… One – while its great to see Adam in a permanent judging role – it would be nice to see SYTYCD rotate 4 judges just to present differing opinions. You guys have mentioned Paula Abdul, Jennifer Lopez… what about Jamie King (Madonna’s choreographer) or for that matter it would be amazing to see Madonna Judge a show. Bring on Debbie Allen as much as you can… Two – who ever thought up the performance show we just saw this evening October 26th – is a GENIUS. Every dancer was spectacular and having them in thier own groups was BRILLIANT. Thank you for going to the effort of producing that show.
THE NEW STAGE IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!! YOU MAY LOSE A LOT OF FANS WITH THIS NEW STAGE. IT LACKS INTIMACY WHICH IS A REASON SO MANY OF US WATCH THIS SHOW. YIKES!! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!!! BIGGER IS NOT BETTER HERE!
I really love SYTYCD and look forward to watching it every week. Rotating third judges was fine but I always thought Adam was the best judge — he has the best critiques of dancers and says his piece without being mean or senseless. I’m willing to give him a chance, although I will miss Debbie Allen being a judge — she also gave really good critiques.
I am NOT willing to watch Paula Abdul judge and watching Nigel get so excited to have Paula come in to be on the panel made me cringe. SYTYCD has been such a gem over the years and I fear it’s going to go downhill fast with Paula senselessly blather. There are plenty of people in the SYTYCD family that can fill that roll.
Nigel, I have read all the comments and agree with many of the concerns posted here.
Mia will be sorely missed as a judge and choreographer; we need her passion for excellence and originality in dance.
Please give us more technical corrections to the routines which would help the dancers and educate the viewers.
Please do not make your favorites so obvious by praising them excessively, even when they have made mistakes that you don’t bother to mention. And conversely, please do not slam a great routine from a dancer who is NOT your favorite. I look for and NEED FAIRNESS from a JUDGE.
Please do not bring in celebrity judges who are only there to improve ratings (you don’t need to do that). The rotating guest judges need to be knowledgeable in the dance world, so that they can offer a fresh eye to dancers and viewers alike.
Please keep the cameras fixed on the dancers during their routines, rather than panning over to the judges’ table for their mid-dance reactions. During the performance, we the viewers don’t care about your impressions; we care only for the full impact of the dancers on stage, so that we can vote for our favorite based on their FULL routine.
Please make the choreographers accountable for bad routines, of which there were some Season 5. And let’s not blame the dancers for those poor routines as well as those ridiculous costumes, over which they have no control!
And lastly, I love to watch the show, and I love it for the opportunities it offers any dancer who is willing to take a chance and share his or her talent. For that I give you kudos!!
NO TO PAULA!!! She was unwatchable on American Idol and I will be forced to stop watching this show if she brings her unintelligible ramblings here.
I enjoy Adam Shankman as a judge, but I think it is a critical error to lose the rotating judge. Each judge brings a different point of view each week and that is a very important part of the judging. I would not like to see rotating celebrity judges. I loved having Ellen on the 1000th show as a one off, but celebrity judges would just add fluff to the show. Constructive criticism is such a integral part of this show for both the dancers and the viewers. Mary…please cut out the screaming, it’s not constructive.
I’m so happy the show is doing so well…it’s my favorite show by far…and it’s great you’ve moved to a bigger venue…but I think the new stage is too big! The old stage was much more dynamic and I loved how the choreographers would incorporate the set into the routine sometimes. My main issue though is the cameramen can’t seem to get the same angles as before. The camera shots are from further away and we lose a lot of the facial expressions and details of the movements. If you can fix that, I can deal with the new stage!
It might have seemed like a good idea but the new set is terrible for dance. If you are watching on TV the flashing background it is just a distraction and all the curved lines for the wings??? I am sure at this point all I can ask is keep the light show to a minimum.
I am so disappointed to hear that Paula Abdul is going to guest on the show and not a rotation of the other choreographers. I’ve grown to love SYTYCD because of its intelligence and wonderful critiques – almost always positive, even when being critical. But Paula Abdul!! When I watch American Idol – which I find difficult to do, predominantly because of the judges, I actually mute her comments, which I find fawning and inane. Please – don’t follow American Idol and stay true to the original SYTYCD show. Stay smart and keep the emphasis on the dancers NOT the judging personalities.
My entire family (3 households 57 to 11 years of age) have been watching since Season 1. We all love SYTYCD, but I can tell you that if Paula Abdul is brought on we will turn off the show. She ruined American Idol. Ms. Abdul obviously abuses prescription meds & has no business making her irrational comments on public television. Children watch this show & she is definitley not a good example of a dancer, performer or person!! PLEASE DON’T DEMEAN THIS EXCELLENT PROGRAM.
Just wanted to add that I also don’t like the new set – the wings nor the distracting flashing lights. Not an improvement in my opinion and again, seems to be less about the dancers and more about “production”.
I am frankly shocked to find the guest-judge scrapped in favor of Adam Shankman as the regular third of the trifecta. As much as I like Adam I can tell you already that I will grow tired of him as a regular.
One of the features that made your show stand apart was the rotating judge scheme, and I think it was a big mistake to change it.
On another note: your using the camera as an active participant again rather than as an observer. All the in/out, pan/tilt, and jerky movement is horribly distracting when you’re trying to watch someone dance. You had finally figured this out in season 5 and did a good job. Now you’ve fallen back to wicked ways.
RW, I completely agree with you! I hate the new stage. It’s really distracting. You can barely see the dancing now. I LOVED the old stage. Why are they trying to turn So You Think You Can Dance into American Idol? What I loved about SYTYCD the most was that it was about culture, learning, art and fun. Now, it seems like its just about idolizing these dancers and turning them into superstars. When did this become a popularity contest?
I have to agree with most all of the above comments. I don’t miss a show and it IS annoying when the cameras are rolling onto the Judges while we are trying to focus on the actually dance. If we are the ones to eventually “dial” the number, then give us the opportunity to give the “dancers” their opportunity.
Nigel, I love your feedbacks. If Mary could calm down and simply speak in a more “Mia” volume, I might be able to absorb her input better.
Adam, well, he’s simply too dramatic when judging. My choices are Mandy Moore, Mia, Debbie Allen among many others. But…that’s my opinion.
I watch the show, not so much for the competition, because to me, the serious ones are all winners. I simply love watching the great choreographers put their heart and hard work into these talented dancers. THAT is what this show is for me.
Thanks for letting me share. Loving the show. Thank you.
Why did you change the set?? It was fine before. In fact now I don’t enjoy the performances half as much. It seems so one dimensional and the audience looks so far away. Your former set was unique and was much more personal. I am a fan of the show, but the set change has definitely knocked it down a few notches for me, it actually seems to make the show look low budget. I do appreciate having less judges since the comments always took so long, but I would encourage guest judges as well, but please, not too much of Paula.
I don’t like the new setting at all either. I always thought SYTYCD did such a good job at minimizing all the flashiness and truly showing off the dancers and the music. This is something the other reality dance shows failed to do in my perspective. And now I find that there is just something about the stage that really makes the show hard to watch and focus.
I will also miss guest judges and think it might get slightly boring with 3 permanent judges. I’m not opposed to celebrity judges and it is sometimes funny to hear what they have to say…. but really FOUR judges? That’s getting a little ridiculous…. and Paula is really one judge I can live without.
I was personally really disappointed to find out that the judges get to start eliminating in the first couple of shows. …DIDN”T the judges get to pick the top 20? And now they get to narrow it down further? How do you even do that after only one show? I feel as if America is getting ripped off. We are getting left with a smaller amount of dancers to choose from. I prefer the previous format.
please shut that annoying Mary up! you toned her down last season but she was going strong again tonight. It is beyond annoying, not funny and unpriductive. Otherwise I like her just hate that noise.
Nigel and company , You have put together another great group of dancers. I am just a middle age guy from small town America but i absolutly love your show. The way you critique the dancers in a positive professional way ( aside from Mary’s yelling ) is so great to see and hear. Keep up the great work and have another tremendous season. P.S. Mary we love you.
Here is my perspective. Do not do the 4 judge thing, I find it very annoying on SYTYCD Canada and would not enjoy seeing it on the US version. NO Paula Abdul, I stopped watching American Idol because of her. If you think the judges don’t criticize “fairly”, you should see the Canadian version! OMG!!!!! It’s a love fest with the 2 permanent judges (Jean-Marc Généreux, who choreographed on the US version, and Tré Armstrong), I don’t believe I have ever heard a constructive comment from either of them. Thankfully the 2 guest judges add a little bit of authenticity with comments the dancers and audience can learn from. Lastly, LOSE the new stage!!! I don’t know why there was a change to begin with but it is absolutly horrid. My 2 cents from an avid fan in Canada.
As another avid fan of both the Canadian and American versions of SYTYCD, I would love to see more styles on the American version of the show. We Canadian fans have been treated to Sean Cheesman’s African Jazz routines that are inspiring, Jamaican Dance Hall, ShoTyme’s House routines, Benji Schwimmer’s Hustle, and we had a tap Theatre piece by Sean Cheesman this year that was such fun, along with the regular ballroom genres, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, etc.
I agree with Francine on the judging, the two permanent Canadian judges are not informative. I understand that they want to remain encouraging and instill confidence in the dancers, but by not pointing out technical errors, they are really not doing the dancers a favour, or helping the audience make informed choices. Although, on both the US and Canadian shows, it quickly becomes obvious who they want to be sent home! Here’s to a great season 6 – I agree with Nigel, a fusion of Seasons 4 and 5 would be just about perfect!
The new set is a disaster! Your show is great and brings dancing to millions of people but the set used for the finale last year, and for the main show this year, distracts TV viewers from the dancers. It is too bright, too distracting, and just too bad that you are using it. Your camera people have to hate it as well because the angles that it offers are part of the problem. Maybe its great for the people that are there in person but I doubt seriously that is where your bread is buttered.
If, for some reason, you are stuck with that set then a) tone down the lighting. The routines where you keep the background turned off are the best ones. Consider doing that more often. And try to get some camera angles positioned like in the old sets. They seemed a lot more intimate and captured the dancers more than the gaudy set.
Sara and Will
P.S. Hopefully we will get over the set as we really do like the show. Keep up the good work.
I have to admit…if Paula comes on the show it becomes a farce. We all know she knows dance…but she is ALL jibber jabber. She is the reason I stopped watching AI.
And Mary, with all of the screaming, is becoming SYTYCD’s “Paula.” We fast forward through Mary because of the nonsense and shrieking. It’s just way too much.
I don’t even listen to the judges anymore because they just go on and on about things that don’t even relate to the dance. Mary is impossible to keep up with with all her screaming and Nigel always has to change the subject to fit in a totally unrelated comment. I love the dancing and I love the dancers, they need to be the focus of the show!!
Also…
The set is way too distracting
Paula Abdul is crazy(I will not watch the episode if she judges)
The show was the best part of my summer but its hard to fit it into my fall schedule. Keep it to the summer, then I have something to look forward to and really get excited for!
hi. I review you site
Adam Shankman, pleeeeeeeease be quiet!
So You Think You Can Dance has been must-see TV for me since Season 2. Here’s my two cents on this thread:
1. Mary’s voice is like fingernails down a blackboard. Listening to her comments is much more pleasant when she uses her ‘inside’ voice.
2. I will miss Mia Michaels terribly. Her choreography is amazing and she is so real.
3. Bringing in ‘celebrity’ judges cheapens the show and distracts from the dancers. It’s an unnecessary ratings gimmick.
4. Ellen DeGeneres was ill suited to sit in as a judge, no matter how much she herself loves dance.
5. Please, oh please, do not have Paula Abdul as a guest judge.
6. Having rotating judges was a good thing. I like Adam Shankman, but I also enjoy hearing from the other choreographers. I’d hate to see having three permanent judges lead to less diverse critiques.
7. Although I was a professional musician/singer for many years, I’ve never been able to tolerate American Idol because of the way the show is put on and the inanity on the judges’ panel. Don’t let SYTYCD degenerate into another AI. Your viewers are not looking for bread and circuses.
8. I have enjoyed seeing international, ethnic and cultural styles of dance be represented.
9. Cat Deeley is naturally gracious and personable and obviously truly cares about the dancers. She’s a delight.
10. Please allow the episodes to be viewed online after they’ve aired; there have been times when I’ve had a TIVO conflict and couldn’t record. Also, many of the dances are too beautiful to see just once.
Hello Nigel,
As you know, in advertising- changes are needed to be done to stimulate interest. Of course, in TV you always need to have a product or show that generates the most viewers. Normally, you know you are doing a fine job with the show. I have interviewed a lot of people about your show and other shows. The problem is the behavior of Mary Murphy. I know many people “enjoy” hearing her scream and yell. If she were to do that in any other place other than the TV studio, of course that would not be acceptable and she may be arrested for exceeding noise levels.
I know the dancers are great and young and they view the screams by Murphy as a positive sign indicating they aced the dance. I have spoken to many people and they refuse to watch the show now- since they do not want to hear Murphy scream.
Murphy screaming is an unnecessary gimmick that is not needed on the show anymore. Otherwise, she has given excellent critiques, about 98 per cent of the time. You have produced many shows, and you could well think about some other gimmick that will generate interest. Murphy’s screaming is also setting a bad example, for the children who watch your show. Maybe, we should send Jo Frost, the Super Nanny over to show Murphy the proper behavior. Luckily, you are the one who has to sit next to her and possibly may be subject to obtaining a headache. But, you do not deserve to get a headache. Hopefully, she could lose her voice for once- and learn herself on how to generate interest.
Hi Nigel,
Adam Shankman was an excellent selection for the third judge. I love him. He is funny, entertaining and provides specific feedback which will help the dancers.
As a matter of fact, all 3 judges have a great chemistry, Mary, Adam and yourself. guest judges are ok depending on the judge. For ecample, Paula Abdul is out of it at times and takes up space and time. I switched channels waiting for her comments to complete. I also disliked Mia Michaels as a judge. I think she is a good choreographer but her delivery as a judge needs polished and lightened. It is a chore for her to smile. Debbie Allen is great. Can’t wait to see you and Mary dance again. Also can’t wait to see you scream and jump up and down again when u see a good performance.
“We’re only making plans for Nigel…”
Can you please call it for what it is, and stop worrying about ratings!? Because, after all, when you start thinking about people liking you (or your show), you stop attracting those who will pay attention. And you can quote me on that

So You Think You Can Dance was one of my favorite shows until this season. Please resist the urge to become more like American Idol. It seems from the judges comments last night that the show is becoming more about popularity than dance. So many of the comments were about what gets people to call in (storylines, hip-hop, etc.) than about actual skill. Does Legacy really deserve accolades over Ryan because he can perform tricks? Maybe you would like to change the title of the show to So You Think you Can be the Most Improved Dancer. Yes it is inspirational, etc., but what about actual dancing as the benchmark?
The main reason you are losing me is the new production design. The lights are giving me a migraine and we see less and less of the actual dancing. We can’t tell how the dancers are doing side by side because the camera rarely gives us a front straight shot. It is very hard to make a judgement when you are seeing the routine from very distorted and distracting angles. If you have to stay with this proscenium style stage, give us some shots from the audience so we can see the picture. The lighting effects should be saved for the opening and ending of the number. Please keep the show about the dancers. Stop the move to make it about flashing lights and technical effects.
I really want to continue watching!
We are avid fans of “So You Think You Can Dance”. We have watched the show mature and the talent grow from season to season. We feel that the quality of contestant has grown to the point that a change in voting should be instituted. The feedback given by the judges is, and will always be, excellent. However, the voting needs to be changed in order to give the contestants a fair vote based on talent and performance and not just “Popularity”. We feel that the panel of judges should be increased to include more of the choreographers and this panel should be voting every week. We further feel that the voting viewer should NOT be eliminated, however, the outcome of the overall vote should be split so that 40% is based on the panel vote and 60% is based on the viewer vote. The winner probably should be called “America’s most talented dancer for season XX”.
Well my dear, I hope that saying how adorable Mollie and Nathan are have tought you a lesson, good dancers with podentials had to leave because of those remarks, I whatch the show all the time
I just don’t have the time for reading all the news (some of us have to work) I waited for a new judge to come on and have been disapointed, I don’t know about Adam, does he drink? I think his cutie remarks about Mollie and Jonathan he should keep to himself, it’s enough when teenagers are voting for such a unprofessional pair he does not have to tell the whole nation it’s okay to vote for inmaturety, okay they do have the potentials maybe in about 2-3 years, but that’s it. Nigel I think you made a mistake in making all these changes.
OOOP’S Nathan
Nigel,
RE. my November 5th message,
Either I need to thank you for considering my suggestion or things worked it’s way out. Mary Murphy’s screaming is unnecessary and immaterial on her part. Since, I have written my message- I have noticed an improvement in her behavior. On Tuesdays, I only watch the first one hour of the show, since I switch over to Dancing with the Stars Results show at 9PM. When Mary is giving her review, I have muted out the sound, so I do not have to hear her scream.
Maybe, I am not that good at reading lips- at least in the first hour she did little or no screaming. Keep up the good work, and no more screaming should be done on the show. Starting in two weeks after Dancing with the Stars is over, I should be watching the whole two hours. Hopefully, I do not have to mute the sound when Mary appears with her review. I am not the only one who can not stand the screaming. Maybe, Mary should do some charity work in a hospital where people are screaming when they are in pain. They can not help their screams due to their pain. Mary, can control her screaming.
I have to agree with most of the comments above. I have loved watching So You Think You Can Dance since season 2, but I believe this season is lacking.
First, I miss the fact there was a rotating judge. It just brought more diversity and insight of the other judges opinions and criticism. I love Adam but frankly I can get bored of him sometimes. I could care less about Paula because I never got into the whole American Idol thing. Ellen was a good judge in my opinion since she was the comic relief of the night.
Second, I MISS MIA!!! Her choreography is simply amazing. No one can touch her brilliant mind. Please come back!
And third, why the new stage??? Seriously! I got the fact for Season 5 the finally they performed in a bigger stage because of the popularity of the show. But not having the old stage is hurting the show in my opinion. The old stage brought familiriaty and intimacy to the show. I loved the stairs and how choreographers incorporated them to the dances.
I’m all for making changes but I think too many changes have been thrust upon us fans. Please take note of what the fans are saying.
Enough of Adam!!
Bring back the rotating judges. We love them.
Where is Mia Michaels? The show is not the same without her.
We love the show the way it was; Nigel, Mary & a rotating choreographer.
Forget about Paula Abdul, Ellen, J Lopez. They are not the show. We miss commentary from Tab & Napoleon, Mia, Debbie Allen, Lil C etc
Mary, Nigel, Cat… you’re perfect, don’t change.
Adam… someone needs you backstage, go.
I love to watch So you think you can dance. I even watch the Canada show as well. I do not like having the same 3 judges each week. The comments and antics are always the same and it has become quite boring. The guest judges added a bit of honesty and changed it up quite a bit. Also, I don’t like where the show is being shown in the big arena. It was much more intimate and personable in the smaller venue and then have the finale in the large arena. Dancers this season are good, but not as good as last season. The Canadians were fantastic last season…..
Nigel,
I would first like to say how much I thoroughly enjoy the show. I didn’t start watching the show until season 5 and when I began I was a little hesitant. But as the show progressed I absolutely couldn’t believe how much I was truly touched and inspired by the dancing. I CAN’T dance a beat to save my life, but I find myself getting chills and sometimes tearing up during some of the routines. Mia Michaels addiction routine and Tyce’s cancer routine to name a couple. But by far my favorite routine was Janine’s routine to if it kills me by jason mraz. I am completely addicted to the show now and don’t delete them from my DVR because I find myself wanting to go back and watch some of the routines time and time again, because I feel like I’m watching them for the first time all over again. For this I would like to thank you!
I would like to know where Mia is this season. I love every routine she has choreographed and really think the show is missing something without her. I also did like seeing a different judge every week, but I also really like Adam Shankman so I dont think it takes away from the show like some comments I have read.
I also want to throw in that I never really cared for the broadway routines on the show until last weak. Ryan and Elanore’s routine was absolutely fantastic! and because of them I am excited to watch those routines now!
So whether you read this or not, I just want to put out there how much this show has inspired and changed my life, and I am not even a dancer. Thank you for all that you guys do!
Yolanda
I also miss Mia Michaels energy as a judge. I miss her, is she ok,
I saw that she had cut off all her hair and seemed a bit off on a earlier show. I do like the rest of the judges..love Mary’s hot tamale train
and excitement, same with Adam and Nigel, thanks for bringing true
entertainment back to tv
[...] Nigel opened up about Season 6 on a press call just before the season started. Read it. [...]
Hello,
Can someone tell me the song which was playing in the background at the end of the show of episode 3 – the Boston audition, during the Vegas montage. I really love this song!!! and I am going crazy searching for it. Please email me or post if you know who this artist is. Thank you.
I love this show. I been watching every single season and episode.
Show is wonderful, but please, tone down Mary’s screaming — even the judges cringe sometimes as she starts yelling. I find I’m turning down the volume on the tv as she starts going. Otherwise, great show.
I’d like to see more of Mia Michael choreo!
