Finalists Channing Cooke and Kevin Hunte were Eliminated

Host Cat Deeley with Channing and Kevin
Finalists Channing Cooke and Kevin Hunte were eliminated tonight on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Cooke, 18, is a Contemporary dancer from Haverhill, MA; and Hunte, 23, is a Hip Hop dancer from Brooklyn, NY. This week’s results show also featured special performances by Australian guitarist Orianthi and dancers from NDM Bollywood Dance Productions.
The three couples who received the fewest votes after Tuesday’s performance show were: Karen Hauer and Kevin Hunte; Channing Cooke and Victor Smalley; and Mollee Gray and Nathan Trasoras. After each of these six dancers performed solo routines, the judges eliminated Cooke and Hunte.
The competition continues on television’s most original dance show Tuesday, Nov. 24 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX when the remaining 12 finalists (Ashleigh Di Lello, Ryan Di Lello, Russell Ferguson, Mollee Gray, Karen Hauer, Jakob Karr, Noelle Marsh, Kathryn McCormick, Legacy Perez, Ellenore Scott, Victor Smalley and Nathan Trasoras) compete as couples once again.
The following night, Grammy Award winner Shakira will perform her latest hit, “Give It Up To Me,” before the judges send two more dancers home on the live results show Wednesday, Nov. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed).
One of the few truly global superstars of our time, Shakira is extending her reach with her eighth studio album, “She Wolf.” The daring, innovative project is the long-awaited follow-up to 2005’s groundbreaking one-two punch comprised of “Fijación Oral Vol. 1” and “Oral Fixation Vol. 2,” a pair of albums that combined to sell over 12 million copies worldwide and secured the young Colombian-born singer’s place among pop-music royalty. On the heels of its widely successful international debut, Epic Records recording artist Shakira is set to release a special U.S.-only edition of her third English-language studio album, “She Wolf,” on November 23. The special U.S. edition of “She Wolf” will include bonus tracks such as “Give It Up to Me” (produced by Timbaland ft. Lil Wayne) and “Did It Again” (ft. Kid Cudi), as well as exclusive live performances, that are available for the first time anywhere all on one disc. The international release of “She Wolf” has already become an instant success occupying the No. 1 spot in 18 countries and selling 1.5 million albums to-date. Over the course of her career, Grammy winner Shakira has sold close to 50 million albums. Her collaborations with such stars as Beyoncé and Alejandro Sanz have helped keep her audience expanding continually. She is the only artist from South America to have a No. 1 song in the U.S., and her performance was a highlight of the concert celebrating President Obama’s inauguration. She has four of the 20 top-selling hits of the decade – more than any other artist – and that includes 2006’s unforgettable “Hips Don’t Lie,” the biggest-selling single of the 21st century, which reached the No. 1 spot in an astonishing 55 countries.
Dance fans can still flex their judging skills and critique the dancers’ performances now through Tuesday, Dec. 15 on the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Judge-Along Live at http://dancefans.fox.com.

Please let me know what artist and what song was playing in the background when Kevin was eliminated? The lyrics were: look at me, I’m not what you need. Didn’t want to hurt you, this is gonna hurt you….here’s where it ends. It’s driving me crazy, can’t figure out the artist. On a different note, this is one of my favorite shows, so inspiring even for 42 year olds!
- I was continuous bored by the show this week. I don’t think there’s got a spectacular routine
- The only one that was QUITE there to me is Jakob & Ashleigh’s.
- Did anyone else saw Ryan did something with his crotch at the end of his routine? It’s killed the line & I don’t get it ??
- Another reason of this boredom is the terribly long comments by the judges! (for keeping the airtime, I guess) which are very ‘pamper’ to some of them.
- After all. Thank god! this week the judges made the right choices! thanks!
I guess its really not about the dancing, boy I sure wish Nigel would make up his mind. This show hooked me on dancing now after 6 seasons I’m more confused then ever. Channing gets the boot because she is a great dancer but not as sexy as Karen, Karen’s dance solo was so week and Channing’s was huge. Not to mention Channing’s great routine Tuesday. I guess the judges know what there doing, but hope not to hear a lecture on how to vote, because they did what Nigel cried about last week. Remember its America’s Favorite DANCER. The Dance may or may not be a part of it unless you’re a call in voter cause it doesn’t seem to matter to the judges, Karen’s lucky she’s sexy cause her dancing this week should have been her ticket Home.
I think the “favorite” part should be the call-in votes and not how the judges makes their decisions. Maybe I missed something but if dance is the bottom line for the judges, I can not see how Kevin and Channing were eliminated over a couple that has had several mediocre performances. I suppose you have too keep the young cute demographic satisfied.
I think Nigel was really off base at praising Mollee’s solo routine. This is America’s favorite dancer, not our favorite gymnast. Her entire solo was just gymnastics linked by mediocre actual dancing. I think the judges should stop plugging the “Dream Team” and actually critique the DANCE. On another note I really did enjoy Nathan’s solo routine.
I think the judges made the right choices. It’s true Channing’s solo and double performance was better than Karen’s this week, but the judges considered that Karen was brilliant in all previous episode while Channing was never at her best. As for the solo it’s hard to critique a ballroom dancer performing without a partner. I’m sorry for Channing though, I feel that she had so much more to give, just needed some more time.
I used to look forward to this show. I felt it taught me a lot about dance without even dancing. I know it taught me to appreciate dance a lot more. But this season is a drag. I like the variety of the 3rd judge. It’s almost like the producers are trying to kill everything they have built up. I felt like Channing was better than Karen last night in her solo. The night before, all 3 judges said they thought Kevin and Karen were in danger. To me it just looked like Karen was strutting around the stage instead of dancing. She could have used a baton. If that’s personality, give me boredom because that is what this show is doing to me. I agree with Kevin’s being dropped. His solo was weak compared to the others. Please bring back the show I looked forward to each week and that includes Mia and Tyce and Li’l C. Even Paula’s empty chair is better than Adam.
Shame on you, Nigel! America knows Karen should have been booted. Even after your stern warning last week, her “life dance” content was completely empty. Past ballroom contestents managed beautiful solos, but Karen chose to coast instead of stepping up to the challenge. Rewarding that behavior is appalling. Practice what you’re preaching to these kids… hard work rather than only looking the part is their reward for staying another week.
I don’t know what the “awaiting moderation” means in my last comment, but I do not have any intention of changing anything. By the time this season ends, I don’t think I’ll care who wins or who is in the top ten. I’ll just remember last season and try to forget this one. Please go back to the original format.
Based strictly on Tuesday’s routines and the solos, Karen should have gone. But overall, she’s a stand out while Channing tends to fade despite her greater technical prowess. No way to accurately judge that extra indefinable “something” that Karen has…it just is.
And Kristy…the song that plays during most of the eliminations is Where It Ends by 16 Frames.
What is the main song they have been playing in the background after a contestant has been eliminated. Is it “don’t let me go “? Who is the artist. I have been trying to figure it out for the longest please send me this info if possible. Thank you a devoted fan
I feel bad that Channing is gone. I think her talent is far better than others still there; however, she definitely got caught by some of her own reserve. Nonetheless, you can see that she is truly loving and loved by the response about loving the dancers. Some times a deep heart hides so much!
As far as what Ally stated above, Ally is wrong. Molly actually used quite a lot of dance moves in addition to gymnastics. The aerial to the knee is quite difficult, plus it is quite expressive in the musicality of the piece! Furthermore, when other people throw gymnastics in, nobody says “Boo.” Ryan through a back handspring/layout in and barely landed it and got told how Aday did it so much better. People last year through gymnastic runs in and nobody said “this is not about gymnastics.”
Ashliegh did a simple hand stand walkover into Jacob’s arms and nobody said, “No gymnastics, Ashleigh!” Earlier, they chided Nicole for not landing her aerial handspring. And they also had dancer after dancer doing light walk overs or handsprings within the choreographed piece.
Mollee took it to a higher level in her solo.
The fact is that Molee used gymnastics to add expression and musicality to the dance and she did it successfully! So you’re wrong, Ally and Nigel happens to be right this time. (And at least they came clean about how they were allowing Jacob to pull Ashleigh into the top ten when she was under performing. And she has improved.)
What a disappointment … How in the world could they have picked Karen over Channing … Wow !! What a shocker … Channing’s solo was awesome, Karen’s solo sucked … All she has going for her is her sexiness (or so some people think) … She will hopefully be gone soon..She may do better in a topless nightclub …
The judges send very mixed messages and I think it’s wrong and I also thing it really influences the fans … Disappointing so far …
As far as I’m concerned, Nigel can take a hike …
Channing should have seriously stayed over Karen. Kevin I didn’t even care about so whatever. But seriously KAREN NEEDS TO GO HOME. She’s a fine dancer (minus this week) but her existence is irritating.
I really think that Karen should have gone home before Channing. Talk about bad personality….that’s Karen. Channing was starting to come out of her shell and she’s a much better dancer than Karen. Karen has a attitude like she’s better than anyone on the show. It’s only a matter of time though until she goes.
Nigel definitely confused me this week. Mollie’s solo was good. She is obviously very gifted but it also looked a bit desperate to me in that she crammed a lot of tricks into it. Nigel has criticized people for that so many times before. I’m not knocking Mollie because I love her to death. I’m just saying that Nigel was contradicting himself.
It also seems that this season, none of the judges have their own opinions. They simply expand on what the previous judge said.
Regarding the eliminations this week, Kevin, though AMAZING, was the obvious choice for the boys simply because he was not as well-rounded as the others.
But the girls??? I know that it’s hard for a ballroom dancer to do a solo, but Karen did nothing but swing her hair around and try to look sexy. She is talented, no doubt. But to be chosen over Channing was outrageous. I don’t really understand the personality thing because Channing has been pretty apparent ever since her try out. They even did one of those featurettes on her in the very beginning showcasing what a great personality she has.
And if we are going to talk about personalities, have you seen Karen on stage when she’s NOT dancing? She’s cold and expressionless. And when she was chosen over Channing and was standing with the other dancers in front of the stage, she was standing by herself and everyone was crying for Channing. I think that says something about the relationship between her and the rest of the dancers.
I wish all the best of luck for Channing & Kevin in the future.
As for Channing, I think she did great this week. Really, pretty much any three couples could have been in danger this week. I liked her solo on the results show. Maybe she’ll make some guest appearances later this season and in future seasons. I wish that people who made the Top 20 but got eliminated early could come back another season. As for Karen, at least now, she has a new partner, so the jidges may have made the right choices this week.
Next week is very important for the viewers because we will be choosing our Top 10. Don’t forget to vote for Mollee & Nathan next week, they deserve to be in the Top 10. Two more couples that I think should be in the Top 10 are Kathryn & Legacy and Noelle & Russell. Don’t forget to vote for them as well.
Until next week, I’ll be there!
dear judges: please send mollee and nathan homenext week! there so annoying! mollee is imature, and nathan is so smug! every time i see them perform i fell like im watching disney channel! not SYTYCD! lets get real here! mollees solo contanined no dancing! it was all acrobatics. she is a female version of jonnathan from season 5! my top 10 predictions :
1.jakob
2.ryan
3.russel
4.nathan ( due to teen boppies who vote for him)
5.legacy
6.mollee (zzz)
7.katharyn
8.karen (noelle MIGHT take her place if karen dosent step up)
9.ellenore
10. ashleigh
The judges got it WRONG this week. I have never been so disappointed that someone went home before, but honestly they got it wrong with Channing. Channing is an amazing dancer and I think her solo was good. Definitely better than Karen! Karen got on stage to perform what looked like a strip tease of sorts. I understand that it is hard for a latin dancer to do a solo, but others have done better in the past. Another thing about Karen is that she doesn’t seem personable. I bet that she doesn’t mesh well with the others on the show. If she is going to stay they she needs to let loose and drop that I am better than everyone mentality.
Mollee and Nathan should go home. They are too immature and it shows. I agree with Aaron, they do remind me of kids from the disney channel..that’s not good for a show that’s supposed to be about amazing professional dance..”America’s favorite” or not.
@Kristy Danache: The song is called “Where It Ends” and it’s by 16 Frames
QUIT WATCHING THIS SHOW — DO NOT LIKE ADAM SHANKMAN. PLEASE GET A NEW JUDGE
REPLACE ADAM SHANKMAN
ADAM SHANKMAN HAS TO GO. SEEMS LIKE NIGEL AND MARY ARE GETTING A LITTLE TIRED OF HIM. TALKS ENTIRELY TOO MUCH. PAULA ABDUL PLEASE…
I. too, felt that the judges had a “double standard” when it came to elimination this week. They say that the solo is so important, as well as “growth on this show” (Nygel has quoted this SOOO many times), but now this “Star Quality” (e.g. “sensuality & sexuality”) comes into play when they choose between Channing & Karen, whose solo I believe was the weakest of all the weeks combined. As for Channing, at 18, I believe she shows more inner strength and beauty than Mollee’s (18) “goofy girl” persona. One must ask oneself, where’s the Star Quality there?! I think Mollee is talented, but I also feel the judges chose her & Karen for ratings over their usual standards for elimination. It just seemed very wrong to me.
i so agree with aaron on mollee and nathan. she’s a brat who mostly jumps and throws her leg up, and he’s a pretty boy who mostly jumps and throws his hair around.
I agreed with the judges this week. I think Karen (despite the lame solo) is probably a better dancer overall than some of the other women on the show who have benefited from a power partnership (such as Ashleigh and Noelle). Those women will not end up in the bottom though b/c Jacob and Russell are very popular. (Russell must be immensely popular to survive the Foxtrot.) It will be too bad though if Karen receives a lot of sympathy votes next week and she and Victor stay out of the bottom. I can’t really think of any other guy than Victor who should be out before the top 10.
I liked Molly and Nathan’s solos and am glad they got to redeem themselves. I think the salsa was just so terrible that people voted to save them while the pop jazz was not officially bad (they received plenty of praise for it) but looked unappealing (like a military drill). “Pop jazz” isn’t so popular with the audience which tends to dislike odd-looking costumes and numbers.
…speaking of which…perhaps there should be whole week dedicated to unpopular dances in order to make it fair: quickstep, foxtrot, hip-hop in spacesuits, high-school level of Broadway, Russian folk-dancing, pop jazz and bizarre contemporary. (If the choreographers are thinking of a piece that requires the dancers to dress as chickens or lizards, this is the week to do it.) Let’s see who can pull out some success from these unpopular pieces.
On the other hand: pretty waltzes, romantic relationship hip-hop, and lovey-dovey contemporary are always successful (especially in early weeks).
1. please god, bring back the variety of judges. There is NOTHING better than Mia on the judging panel.
2. Cat Deeley deserves an Emmy.
3. Karen needs to go like, three weeks ago. Sexy is not good. It’s just sexy. And it gets old.
Sally , the main song in the background when a contestant is eliminated is ‘Never say Never(don’t let me go) “by The Fray however the song in the background for Kevin’s elimination was “Where it End” by 16 Frames
Kelly and AJ, you two clearly weren’t watching Mollee’s solo to come up with such biased crap as what you did. I’m not even a Mollee fan and my bull-crap sensor is up there. “Jumps and throws a leg up,” AJ said! Shows how little you know! That’s a tremendously difficult and controlled move she did. I challenge YOU to do it in the comfort of your own living room. Stay away from the tv or you’ll fall into it. In fact, I hope you don’t get a charlie horse and twist your ankle in the process.
And AJ calling people ‘brats’ really just shows your own brattyness. Mollee has not done anything bratty. She’s bubbly and giggly but that’s not a crime, nor does that type of demeanor show immaturity as some claim. She makes a personal choice to be that way rather than walking around with a chip on her shoulder.
And Kelly, Mollee performed the best solo this season. She had one crappy dance in the salsa. If anything, she got lambasted for the immaturity of Nathan’s comment last week. You could see that she paid attention to Nigel’s words.
I do agree with Vicky that Ashleigh and possibly Noelle are scraping by on the popularity of their strong partners.
Producers:
The stage SUCKS. The LIGHTS SUCK. When are you going to realize that it’s a huge distraction and takes away enjoyment from watching the dancers! Either decide to have road shows only with stage lighting. Or chose to have a television show! But the lights glare off the tv. They give shadows over the dancers faces or bodies. They GLARE.
I can’t even tell you how close I am to just dumping this show and mostly it’s due to the lighting. (The old stage with the stairs was so much better!)
@magicdancer mollees gymnastics were good. and i agree that, that is very hard to do. but its a dance show. not a diseny channel jump rope competition. this is so you think you can dance.
Aaron.
Open your eyes. She did a heck of a lot more than gymnastics and it’s only someone who already has a bias against her who wouldn’t see that. She did dance steps, leaps, pirouettes, a balance. And of course transitions from each item.
Take off your biased glasses and you’ll see that if it had any other name of than Mollee, you would see all that she did.
It has been the best dance and ‘dance for your life’ this season.
For one thing I have to comment is the costume of the BIRD routine.
Is vary dull and UNINSPIRED!
I am terribly frustrated with this season!!! It has so much potential, but this season is not living up to last season’s expectations. A few people have mentioned looking forward to this show….I did as well. Notice the past tense?
The judging has never been unbiased, that’s plain to see. But this year it is so obvious. I have been proven right about groupthink, as the judging provides no lasting impact other than to eliminate two dancers. Bring back the alternate judges! Mia or Tyce would have not have let this happen. Karen should have left the show. The only thing she has going for her, besides her latin technique is her sexiness. I don’t see a personality aside from that. Channing had a clear unique personality from the audition phase. I’m not thrilled about Mollee or Nathan, but they redeemed themselves with their solos on the last show.
All the changes they’ve made to this show have NOT been for the better. I’m not so sure I’d care to watch a 7th season if they keep veering off course.
As a 29 year old woman, I’m not intimidated by sensuality, as Nigel puts it. I’m disappointed in poor solos. Where were Karen’s latin moves in that dance? There was no hip movement, and barely any footwork. It was like she was at a Doors concert, standing with her legs apart and shaking her hair and head. That was it, for 30 seconds. It’s not that hard for a ballroom dancer to do a good solo – Lacey, Benji, Chelsea etc. etc. all had GREAT solos, so Nigel’s excuse (yes, it was an excuse) for keeping Karend was a terrible one. Channing was reserved, but finally starting to come out of her shell, and we would have seen amazing things from her, I’m sure. She’s a fabulous dancer. I don’t know if they made this decision for the producers or good tv or what, but seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed. And seriously, Mary Murphy voted to keep Karen in???!!! ugh. I think I may finally be over SYTYCD.
just an fyi for anyone who hasn’t figured it out, I don’t think Adam Shankman is hot for Karen. p.s. he’s gay.
so far i’ve hanged on with the judges with their decisions but this elimination i found wrong channing pulled her heart out on her routine karen wasn’t doing anything. kevin should be the combo out
Sorry to see Channing and Kevin go; they did a great job. The show is entertaining this season, but does seem to lack a certain “something” that I can’t put my finger on.
The filming this season is positively atrocious. It is so distracting and never allows the viewer to actually watch the DANCING that is happening on stage. Why on earth is the camera in constant motion, and tilting?!?!? It is the equivalent of saying that none of the dancing that could happen on stage could possibly be interesting enough to allow the television audience to appreciate it on its own.
Also, while the enormous screen in the background my be a benefit the dancing when used in a tasteful way, the rest of the set is impressively tacky. Is it actually possible to create a more cheesy and cheap looking background for a dance performance? Truly amazing dance should be able to stand by itself on a bare stage without any costumes. The costumes are generally fine, besides Channing’s crotch fringe, but what is all of this crap on the stage?
In short, this overall aesthetic of and presentation of the television presentation of dance is so distracting, and new to this season.
well… im EXTREMELY DISAPOINTED!! Nigel clearly said that solos are key and will save u… karen goes up there and does HORRIBLE!! Channing dances her heart out and blows karen and ME AWAY!! so now that karen did bad nigel had to make up some BS!! too save her!! so i believe that Channing did what the judges asked for and karen “tried” to dance. good thing she has that “sexy” part!!
I agree, sick to death of Molee and Nathan. I think the judges are biased, calling them the “Dream Team”. They do not have half the maturity of the other dancers, and it shows terribly. Talented, yes, Dream Team, no.
I hope that Karen gets to do a paso dobles routine….surely that is what she can do best.
Go for it, Karen!
Yeah I was disappointed in Channing leaving, at least a little. It seemed early on that she had quite a personality and then from Vegas on, we just, never really saw it, until this past week. Getting past her nervousness, or whatever it was that was holding her back, came out too late. It was there finally and I think she got the axe right before she was about to shine. A real shame…
Keeping Karen over Channing I feel was a mistake, but it’s too late to fix it now. Though as much as Karen is nice to look at, I’m ready to say good bye. Her talent is great, but limited…not to mention she is boring in her solos. Never seen a ballroom dancer struggle so much with their solos like her. Whatever, unless something really changes soon, she’ll be getting the axe in the near future.
I would be great to be able to see solos from Ashleigh and the other girls….how would they fare??
I don’t think it’s really fair that the judges constantly compare this season’s dancers to last season. If we want to get into particulars, I don’t believe that any season will compare to seasons 2 and 3 dancers. And I really don’t quite understand why some bottom six contestants are judged based on their dance-for-your-life performances, while others’ dances are judged in consideration with their past performances, other than the judges have their favorites, thus basing their decisions based on whom THEY would personally like to see in top ten (i.e. ballroom dancers). And would someone give the judges a drink or two before some nights, because, seriously, grumpy anyone?????? I know we expect a lot from some dancers more than others, considering what we can see they’re capable of, but anyone hear of POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT? Yes, they need to get reasonably honest critique, so they will improve according to their potential, but dream-crushing comments from people (mostly Nigel) who put them in the top 20 to begin with isn’t probably the best way to get the most out of the dancers. Other than that…probably the best competition on television ever. I’m a singer, but this beats American Idol any day. What skill and determination these young ones show. It’s awesome to watch them learn a new dance, out of their “element” week after week, annd see them rise to the occasion. Great premise, greatly executed! SYTYCD nights are my favorite of the week. I hope to enjoy many, many more seasons.
Channing is a talented and beautiful dancer and she showed the promise of giving “that” performance. I don’t think the judges got it right this week. To me the obvious choice to leave, based on lack of growth, poor performance and lack of audience appeal, were Karen Hauer and Kevin Hunte. Neither have shown they can take on new styles and accomplish them. And their solos were weak. I think the only reason Karen is still there is because Nigel would like a little piece of that action and he is the Executive Producer after all. I would like to see the judges elimination process televised. When Nigel says “we are not unanimous on this decision” does that mean he used his power to overrule what the other judges voted?
Please bring back the 3rd guest Judge format each week that we look forward every time! SYTYCD is unique that way and very enjoyable than the other well known shows. We especially love Mia, Lil C,Tyce,Tab & Nap. My family and I has been watching since season one and we felt taking the 3rd guest judge made your show a bit boring. Nigel, please don’t be super critical to these kids, just turn it down a notch.
have been
Just watched Tuesday’s show. I don’t know what star appeal or massive stage presence Karen may have in person, but it really doesn’t come across on TV. Time and again, we hear the judges say ‘yea, you did ok, even though this wasn’t your style, but you have to be good at everything,’ and every time she comes up, it’s like ‘i know this isn’t your bag, and considering that, you did amazing’. Whatever this thing is that she’s got, it’s put a spell on all the judges. Stop it!!! That’s not how this works. I was decently impressed with her tango, she does have that fieriness, and I know club salsa is a lot looser than tango, so it was ok, but that hip-hop number was horrible.
This season has been a joke. Every week I have notice the judges have found something wrong with mixed couples performances, Leading up to that couple being in the bottom three. Some how it always leads to one of them going home. Pretty soon there will be no more mix couples if things keep going the way they are. Lets L@@K and see how the rest of the other mix couples do!!!!!!
I somehow dont agree with a few things, but its great anyways.
