Head vs. Intention

An example of the voice saying yes, while the head shakes no.

Hillary, after casting her vote, says she is looking forward to working with Obama.

  1. Scary! And totally interesting!!
The first episode last night was AMAZING!! Just had too much information coming at us regarding what Cal was looking at (micro expressions, body language) for us to memorize. Could you please post more videos like these or maybe put up a list of them on the Lie to Me website for each episode us to go back to as we watch.

Whenever the camera zoomed in on what he was seeing, between all of us in the room watching, we still couldn’t remember what they meant. That took away from the show since we felt like we were missing a lot of what’s going on (not to mention we felt kinda silly for not being able to remember).

  2. Funny it is like her mouth is saying one thing and her mind is saying the exact opposite through the shaking of her head. Never really liked Hilary so to see a bit of her egotistical side come out is no suprise.

  3. Wow, that seems like such an obvious gesture, but I would never have thought so beforehand! Wow!

  4. Interesting. Wonder if the politicians are even aware of these new ways of deciphering lies.

  5. Shaking head no while saying yes.

  6. This study about facial expressions that give away what you’re really thinkin is truly fascinating!

Hope you guys keep up the good work!

  7. I do not believe that it is as much of the head shaking as it is the emotion in her face. When talking about working with Obama her eyes and emotion at one point she pauses and looks almost pissed off. To me she appears to be dissapointed or maybe disgusted at what is taking place. If you watch other interviews she always refers to supporting the democratic selection and not the person. This video reenforces that.

  8. In addition to the obvious, you could also see a lot of the corners of the mouth drooping.

  9. Lol, there’s a micro-scorn at 1 : 07, it’s kinda hard to see, but it’s there.

  10. This show rocks – how long before I’ll get good at telling lies!?!?!

now which was I talking about – telling lies myself or telling when someone is lying?
    gonna be fun…

  11. haha. omfg. that’s so embarrassing.

  12. I’ve noticed that Clinton shakes her head from side to side while speaking quite often. So either every other statement she makes is a lie, or she just has a habit. Even though she’s a politician and a Clinton, I’m still leaning toward the 2nd explanation. That being said, she’s obviously lie about her positive outlook.

  13. Did you also notice how Mrs. Clinton “rolls her eyes” several times. Are these emblematic slips?

  14. Poor Hillary… she and Bill give lie catchers a lot of material to work with.

  15. When I think about times I might shake my head, I think about disbelief, too.

Like you just can’t believe you’re in this situation.

So, in a sense, yes, Sen. Clinton is lying, but it might not be as scathing a situation as some wish it to be.

BTW, her head didn’t shake no when she said she voted for Obama. If she really wanted Obama to fail, then perhaps she would have voted McCain?

  16. I can’t wait to see all of the stuff they come up with on OBama. Glad to see that they are already using his negative stances on the show. It’s nice to know that not everyone bows down to this idiot.

  17. I noticed around 0:12 that her voice intonation drops, she flicks her eyes up briefly in a rolled eyes gesture as she says “No doubt about it. We’re going to have a great election today.” The drop in intonation sounds like sarcasm almost, but not quite as obvious as sarcasm usually is. And the eye roll usually indicates sarcasm/disbelief, imo.

Also, her facial expressions begin to flatten out there and lose the big smile and animated look.

In regards to Nathania, I suspect that it’s not so much that she wants Obama to fail as it is that she’s not happy *she* wasn’t being voted in, instead of him. She’s still supporting the party, but she’s not happy at all that it’s Obama and not her.

In addition, at 1:53, she does a brief shrug of both shoulders as she says “The country will be well-served,” and during the lead-up to that point, as well as after, her eyes are shifting all over the place. She can’t look straight into the camera. Whereas near the beginning, she was able to look straight into the camera.

I’d hazard that she’s not sure about what she’s saying there, at the very least. And not comfortable with talking about Obama in positive language. Possibly outright lying about believing he’s the right man and that we’ll get out of the economic crisis under his leadership.

Oh, and she shakes her head a lot in this clip, yes. ;)

  18. After watching Lie to Me, that was a very interesting clip to see. Every Obama bit, head shake no, every “it’s going to be hard,” head shake yes.

  19. After watching the show, you can totally tell that she’s lying her ass off. She doesn’t believe a word she’s saying.

  20. I don’t necessarily agree that this is a sure fire way of detecting a lie (by saying yes while shaking no). Shaking one’s head can also signal disapproval, or disbelief. Example: If my team loses the big game to the last place team, I shake my head from side to side in disbelief. Clinton just lost the big game and was now voting for the other team. The side to side head shaking could just be her recalling the loss sub-conscientiously, as she answering a question related to it , and disbelieving and/or disapproving the loss; not Obama. You can tell she’s deep in thought while answering the questions. It’s almost like shes having two conversations; one with the media and one with herself. Hilary is a champion. As with all true champions, she dwells on a loss much more than others.

  21. i think she is still in her shame of failing, but she mut say some thing that pretend she is happy to not be the president

  22. on top of the head shaking the pitch in her voice doesnt make her seem to excited to talk about it as well as the lack of expressions in her eyebrow/forehead area

  23. i saw a lot in this video, but the most obvious was that everytime she said anything positive about obama and the election day she would shake her head NO!

and then when mentioning anything about the “trouble ahead” he would nod her head yes!

she also had atleast one delayed reaction to what she was saying

and also curved her lips downward a few times…

just some little stuff i’ve noticed. i’ve only been looking into this whole thing for about a week now but I LOVE IT!!!!

  24. This headshake thing bothers me, The meaning of it is *cultural*, not a true hard-wired microexpression like disgust or anger.

I know this because I worked with people from India and ran into lateral head-shaking when I would speak to them. I learned after asking, that *they* shook their heads from side-to-side, not to show disagreement but to show they were intently listening (no, they were not lying to me…).

And, as Anthony writes, since it’s cultural, the actual meaning even within the US is imprecise and can vary from person to person and situation to situation.

  25. I agree with Anthony S. When she was shaking her head from side to side I just got the feeling that she was just so bummed out that it was her that was in Obama’s place. I think she was shaking her head to the conversation in her head telling herself to get over it and stop letting her thoughts get in the way of answering difficult questions with poise. I really don’t think she’s lying, just that there are other things going on.

  26. Sure Anthony does have a point but when you do lose a game if you are asked if the better team won by a reporter with a recording camera running – you might say yes but if you do shake your head no it wouldnt exactly be from disbelief.

You would only shake your head at the thought of your team actually losing.
But you could argue it both ways.

There are plenty of other examples that show that she isn’t interested in working with him. And to everyone else, even if they do know about these lie detectors you cannot control them. Even if you think about it 24/7 it can slip. And even if you do hold back these gestures, there are of course microexpressions you can’t control and pitch changes you can detect.

  27. I’m not so sure I have a good baseline for Mrs. Clinton, but I can say this: I’m not convinced by the head shaking (in the beginning) alone. I am rather convinced by the rest of the video.

I am more convinced when she says “the tremendous, uh”, then the expression at 0:31, the next pause, “uh…”, combined with face/look shortly thereafter until 0:34 when she continues with “opportunity”.

The head-shaking and facial expression that follows (around 0:41) could still be from disbelief.

I can’t quite tell if 0:49 is quickly hidden behind a smile or if that’s just the beginning of her smile. Later she does this again, but that time the expression is clearly not part of the smile.

My next disclaimer: now is when I get into hyper-sensitive mode and start seeing things that probably aren’t there…

    (and now I’m paraphrasing some)
“Barack’s calm [head shaking yes] effective leadership …”,
“… so [head shaking no] I feel very good …”,
    1:42 has a brief not-strong expression,
“… I think that, uh, the country …” – The first syllable of “country” – Is she bored? Was that a whole-body nod? I don’t know what that was.
” will be well served [shoulders shrug] I’m not painting any rosy scenarios”
“…[head shaking yes] very difficult to dig ourselves out of the ditch…”
“…we’ll do it and I’m [head starts shaking no] very confident about that.”

And then again, immediately after “I’m very confident about that”, 1:57-1:58 has the expression that (this time) definitely isn’t a smile that then becomes a smile.

One question: if this is such a ‘tell’ for Mrs. Clinton, why the quick head shake during: “since the economic crisis… of, uh [head shakes no] middle of September”?

To Andrew: I don’t see a scorn at 1:07, unless it’s the 1:04-1:05 look, but that looks more like she’s paying attention to something else briefly, not really scorning (the thing she seems to be looking at is in about the same area she had watched while walking over to the reporters)… But I’m new to this, so I could be missing it.

To most other commenters: I think this point can’t be stressed enough (I might just include it in every comment I make): There is no single universal “tell” for deception. Unless Dr. Ekman is hiding something from us. These signs should be taken in a very large context. Does Hillary have any reason to be stressed or feel guilty about lying in this video? If she’s a good person she might feel so bad about lying that she can’t suppress the feeling. “House” (the show about the crazy doctor) covered the idea that some deception might be done to convey how we want to feel. Mrs. Clinton might feel a little guilty about her past (and possibly current) feelings concerning Mr. Obama. If this is the case, it might be better for us to believe her lie because, after all, she wants to feel that way (even though she doesn’t).

  28. I see very strong disapointment written all over her – she also looks tired. Her eyes look bleak. Compare them to the wide eyed look in the previous clip where she mentions how she “never considers the possibility of not winning.”

She seems to have a trained habit of moving her head from side to side. Many public figures do this. This suggests we have to look carefully at this aspect to avoid being misled. There is a difference between the consistent and smaller movement she does most of the time, and the “gestural slip” headshake.

I think it’s true that some of the head shakes aren’t directly related to every single thing she is saying, but a leak of the feeling that she is fighting off – “no, no, no, this can’t be happening, it should be ME winning this!” She’s been single-mindedly working towards winning without even considering the possibility of losing, but now she has to suddenly put on a brave face.

When she smiles at the end, it’s an obvious mask as her eyes don’t share the smile.

  29. It’s like she’s not even trying…

  30. Contempt .

  31. I don´t know she takes too long on searching for the right words, she´s not being expresive with her hands and she moves her head a lot denying everything!
It´s almost like she doesn´t want to be there…

  32. Hey there everybody i know you’ve all probably heard this already but check out google for all the scandal thats been going around about her lately
basically she first claimed that the tape was for a boyfrind in highschool at which time she begged him to tell the media she was 17 at the time. This morning on tmz they talked about a voice interview where the man who had the video insists that she was 20 at the time.

You can check out the newest tmz story and pictures here. http://photos.tmz.com/galleries/carrie_prejean_san_diego_romp#55556

So i know theres a lot of bullshit going around on the internet but i finally found the actual video. SO CHECK IT OUT SHES HOT AS HELL but all in all just another homeade sex video. The link is http://tinyurl.com/ye95zu7

  33. She shakes her head “no” when talking optimistically about obama and then starts to shake her head “yes” when talking about how difficult it is going to be.

  34. not only is her head saying no but look at how she hold her breath and her lips are closed tightly inward….you think she is holding out here…..or maybe just wants to change the subject….this is not a very confident person at all and they got her up there under Obhama
