Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s reaction when he talks about the just-announced iPhone from his competitors at Apple. How do you think he really feels?
iPhone? Are you kidding?

This is not from the just-announced iPhone, but when the very first iPhone was announced about two years ago.

He’s obviously worried because you can tell the laughter comes on to fast, in Blinded Dr. Lightman talks about anger and says that real emotions come on slowly and if they appear to happen quickly it is fake. He has no smile before making his comment, and while he talks and appears to be laughing there is no movement or wrinkles in his forehead or near the eyes. In my opinion he is scared of the iphone and is faking his suprise and enjoyment of the thought that the extremely successful iphone could beat microsofts lesser used Zune.
-
he is mad > : |
-
Lightman is totally right. You can obviously see that he worrried about how his product will compete with the iphone. Quite frankly it’s obvious on his face that he knows his product is inferior.
-
You csn tell exatly how he feels about the iPhone 3-4 seconds into the clip. When he hears the words ‘iPhone” and “zune” pause the screen and see the look on his face!
-
The “smile” that shows just when I hear the word Phone is false. The smile is not accompanied by the upper teeth or the typical wrinkles in the mouth and eyes.
This expression is closer to a smile of superiority. Not only shows concern on the subject, but very negative emotions to the question.
The observation by Lightman on the rhythm of feeling is very good, he is acting.
-
I’m tempted to think he shows contempt when he hears the word “Zune” at 0:05. Perhaps the contempt is triggered by interviewer saying “iPhone” and has some delay on Steve’s face, but I get the feeling that he doesn’t like the Zune and that afterwards he tries to convince him and the interviewer otherwise…
-
Well, the guy on the left who you see in the first 2-3 seconds is showing contempt, whiel looking at the interviewer, and then steve, dont know what he meant by that though.
As lightman said, emotions appear more slowly as it said in ‘blinded’, steve shows no anger, but he does not really find the whole iphone thing funny at all, all the action is in his mouth, and there is no activity around the eyes, or his forehead, which looks like it goes all the way around his head…
Basically, I think he is not finding the iPhone funny, but he is worried because even he knows the iphone is good. He also does not point out actual cons in the iphone itself (except lack of keyboard) and mainly talks about the price.
He is also rocking forward and back as he says it, maybe its a gestural slip, I’m not sure what it could mean though. -
Pause the video and then slide the circle thing at the bottom to o:57 seconds exactly. he seems to be peering at the interviewer or something. what is that?
-
pay attention to steve’s expression at about 6 seconds and pause when he seems to sniff. there are hints of anger and contempt on his face, and at about 7 seconds, he slightly pushes his chin forward; a sign of hostility, i’m guessing… at 0:57, i think he’s just angry at the question “how do u compete with that?” lol. his eyebrows are pulled together down, and his lips slightly tighten. i’m guessing he was “peering” to conceal his anger.
-
just hear the tone of his voice (between 15 and 25 ) it looks like if he wanted to cry. It shows uncomfortable and desperate . And in all the speech he talk with a sarcasm tone about Iphone what mean that he dosn’t believe in his “new product “.
-
i didnt write a part sorry …..
PS: apologize for the bad english
-
Speaker does bilateral shrug, when saying it may sell well…doesn’t believe that. When he mentions the Zune at $99 his brows lift, eyes wide, and mouth drops…fear? When the question is put forth how do you compete with that, not only is there a chin thrust but a definite tension in the neck, aggression? Followed by trouble swallowing and another chin thrust. He is definitely showing discomfort.
-
Look at his face at 1:27, looks like helpless/worried to me.
Lol look at 2:14 when the reporter ask “and you still feel that you can be very competitive in that space” - “sure, absolutely” then briefly at 2:20 he partially blinks twice and his eyes goes down… yeah right…
-
the rocking motion mentioned before is a comfort mechanism, usually displayed by those who are in a very uncomfortable position. Psychologists note this in autistic paitents, as it mimics the rocking motion of a mother comforting a baby. I’ve heard of it being used universally, as it is a subconscious reaction.

Steve showed disgust when first asked about the Iphone and then contempt when he began to discuss it. Later on in the conversation he began to show more and more fake happiness and pride when talking about his own product and how “far ahead” he is compared to the I phone. What I believe I saw him hiding was fear and anxiety. You’ll see him do a make a lot of facial expressions that are over exaggerated. His eyebrows go crazy, his head moves back and forth in response to the questions. These are things people do sometimes when they are trying to hide an emotion. They feel if they seem engaged and intensely interested they might seem more believable. It’s on the same type of thinking that people have when they are telling a lie..they look directly into your eyes rather than looking away.
-
At 0:29-0:30 the way he says “we”, the edges of his lips drop for a moment, like when you are about to cry. Throughout the interview he avoids talking about iPhone. Instead, he is talking about the advantages of their products. And this cinical smile during the whole time… Makes me feel that by this he is trying to cover his real feelings.
-
Hi, this is a response to Sandra, I just wanted to say that eyebrows raised and eyes widened and jaw dropped is surprise not fear.
In my opinion he shows contempt, anger and fear towards apple.
Thanks -
Anyone noticed that the guy who is at the side of steve shows an OBVIOUS contempt at the start of the video?
-
Why do I have to leave a comment in order to read a comment? Then, maybe I have to leave a comment, but STILL don’t get to read? Lets submit this and find out, shall we?
-
Freeze the video at 0:14 and you have the face of a man crying !
-
Hmmm… watch at 0:06- 0:07 seconds, when the zune is mentioned and he seems to sniff. His nostrils flare if you watch closely, and its done throughout the interview. That’s a sign of fear, sadness or anger— probably all three here.
-
he swallowed.it means he really hate Jobson))
-
Haha i think hes jelous because he thinks its going to sell very well
-
Well… he tried to defend his own product of course but his awareness on his competitors is shining right there in his eyes, and he knows it´s gonna be hard.
Even he tried to convince himself and the rest of us telling information of statistics, sells… He knows he is not looking at a teddybear device… jajaja -
Boy does he hate Steve Jobs! He also seems very unsure about the future of his phone and I think he’s making a play to stockholders. A very angry man evertime Apple comes up!
-
also, around 1:42 when talking about music and media he makes a “sad” face and his left sholder slumps - I believe he doesn’t think he can compete in that area.
-
When u see him talking about the music side of the conversation he is more relaxed and sits further back in his seat. U can see that he feels more confidant about this side of the business, he even talks quieter. Looking at the conversation as a hole I would say he is fearfull of what the iPhone can do and is masking it with comady. If u were to do the same interview now it would be differant because he knows what he is up against. We all fear change and the unknone.

Tath men is lying. When a people lies, usually repeat the last sentence tath men said. Taths enough for me. plus tath smile , Totally fake. His eyes didn’t wrinkle.

The guy at the beggining is the infamous ex Nortel CEO Mike “Z-Man” Zafirovski. Under Mike’s administration, Nortel , founded in 1882, went bankrupcy. Nortel, a Canadian Telecom company, once the biggest maker of telephone equipment in North America and an object of pride for canadian people (think of it as a canadian Microsoft) is currently being sold piece by piece to other Telecom companies. The original interview was done on Jan 17 2007 by CNBC ( http://www.cnbc.com/id/16671712 ) and Mike probably already knew the destiny of Nortel, but was still lying to everybody else in the tech world. No wonder he was showing contempt at the start of the video.
-
The nostril flare at the beginning is priceless…..
-
when the iPhone is first mentioned he gives an imediate fake smile in an attempt to disguise his feelings of discontept and then begins to shift around on his seat slightly and this gives a sense of akwardness around the topic of the iPhone. at 0:46 there is a brief flash of anger with the lowering of the eyebrows and slight tensing of the lower eyelids and lips, possibly because he realises the competition he faces when comparing the two product’s features. then at 0:54 their is a brief look of despair just after stating that he likes his strategy, obviously infering that in fact he is not confident with his strategy up against that of the iPhone. the final major sign of his deception is at 1:00 with a brief eye shift followed by a look of contained disbelief when the interviwer says that the iPhone has taken alot of puiblicity, this again suggests that he feels very threatened by the competition. this is all evidence of the fact that he is lying about having no worries about the introduction of the iPhone, as after 1:15 when he states actual facts about Apple’s position in the market and is telling the truth, this being his base line, he is alot more relexed and answers flow naturally. comparing this base line to the beginning half of the interview suggests that he is lying about his opinions.

where is the best place to start trying to learn this stuff?
