Sincerely Vick

From Lie to Me Exec Producer Shawn Ryan’s Twitter:
Forgot to mention in my time last week w/Paul Ekman he weighed in on Michael Vick on 60 minutes? Do you think he found Vick sincere or not?

Here’s the Vick interview. Would you call this sincere?

  1. yes.it is sincere

  2. 4:22 a small twitch just left of his nose when “agreeing” that he lack moral strength.

    i think contempt/anger

  3. Oh god. Oh wow. At precisely 5.25 he flashes a happiness micro expression, as if he thinks this interview is a joke, as if the disgust just amuses him. And again, a few seconds later as he says it again.

  4. Also, sorry for the double post, but he keeps flashing happiness throughout, and shows inconsistancies when he describes “prison beds.” My guess is that he’s been there before.

  5. I think that Michael Vick was not sincere about most of what he was saying. I think that he was angry that he was having to answer these questions, and had an underlying contempt about the situation. He was creating most of the things he was saying and carefully choosing his words. He was sincere about the game, and I believe he was sincere about what he was saying about pets. However, I think that he viewed these dogs differently then how he would view a pet. I think that he is very concerned about getting his career back and is willing to say what he needs to in order to do that.

  6. when he was talking about regretting about what he did… he was showing that he was nervious, he was ansious, and trying to make us believe he was regretting but his face and body sayd that he lied… when he mentioned that he regret it his shoulder was backing up and when he asured that he did, his head was saying no!
that means he is not regretting it!!!
    the whole interview…
    HE LIED!!!!!!!

  7. Oh dear God, absolutely no remorse in that interview, he’s spoon feeding what everyone wants to hear.

  8. hi im omar im 14 he was lying his ass off no gult no shame biting his lip all the time is antienty his vocal pitch fluxuated evey minute he is lying

  9. At around 1:50 he clearly shows more remorse for the loss of his football career than he did for the things he previous mentioned. This guy is a joke, at best.

  10. Overall, he was inconsistent and a little contradicting.
When saying he was disgusted with himself, he showed little if no emotion. Certainly no disgust.
Shaking of the head for positive ‘yes’ statements.
Constant pacifying and calming of himself with lip licking.
He later says he should have stopped it to save his career and family rapport, when confronted about this, he says, ‘a $130million dollar career has got nothing to do with it, it should have been about the cruelty!’
    Happiness Micro-Expressions were also wierd!?
I do believe, however, that he does know what he did was wrong and that he does regret doing it. Whether this is due to the animal cruelty or the fact he got caught and almost lost a career, I don’t know?

  11. I saw flashes of happiness. A few contempt. Some anger.

    Almost no remorse.

  12. A bit more to add…
Vick also says, ‘no way of describing the hurt and guilt I felt,’ whilst smirking or possibly suppressing a smile. Again no flicker of ‘hurt’ or ‘guilt.’
On being quizzed, ‘you cried a number of nights?’ Vick answers, ‘yes’ with a shake of the head once and a smile which looks like contempt.
5:15 he says his feelings are the same as the people’s on the subject. But he does so with a light ‘right’ shoulder shrug and an inconsistent emotionless face.
    Unconvincing.
6:15 Vick states that, ‘football don’t even matter’ whislt flashing contemptuous expressions at least twice. ( or so it seems to me?)
8:50 He explains that he was introduced to dog fighting, ‘very young’ and at that time didn’t know it was wrong. (Vick says this with a left shoulder shrug.)
He may have said this to justify or validate the reason for doing the wrong, as to be exempt from feelings of remorse and guilt. For e.g ‘I didn’t know it was wrong, so it means I am not responsible.’
Would this prevent him from feeling remorsefull in the first place?
(P.S… May have over ‘analyzed’ and gotten it all wrong!)

  13. I saw happiness in his face when he was speaking. He is not at all guilty of what he has done, may be he is proud of it.

  14. I think he simply does not understand why torturing dogs is wrong. He was told that it is wrong but he has not changed a bit. I do not see sincere regret. He was/is concerned about his family and career, yes! From 6:15 he is talking about how his career was less important than anything else. He is constantly looking away and mumbling. I think all he cares about is money.

  15. Whether he is sincere or not, at least he is proactive in joining the Human Society’s efforts. I dont think it matters about the politics on why he chose to join the effort, but rather the influence his message will have on the younger generation. Kids who watch football and other sports know who he is and will accept his message. They dont know anything about sincerety in someones actions to the same depth as an adult. He could have just said he was sorry and went back to his football career, but instead he has taken an extra step to get a message across from his mistakes.

  16. A lot of of lip licking is the first thing i would like to mention. second when he he first said “disgust” he smiles. i saw more happiness then anything. third the repetition when he’s asked if losing the $130 million contract matters. fourth, no angry in fact i don’t think i saw his brow move then entire time. fifth, every time i saw him start to bite his lip the camera moved off him.

Overall I think he’s happy he got off light, i don’t think he would do it again out of fear, I’m sure he knows he’s being watched closer then before.

  17. he was ffaking disgust with the flash in his eye 5:25 or 5:26 so he is lieing with the happiness shown he is a liar

  18. It does seem through much of this that he’s simply saying what is expected, and when he says he’s feeling disgust, he shows no sign of it. The fleeting inappropriate smiles don’t help his case much either.

I am curious however as to what someone in his position would look like while in the process of changing how they think and feel because every so often he seemed slightly perplexed. That may simply have been because he has changed so little that he couldn’t ever quite grasp the question, but I was nonetheless reminded of Malcom X’s transformation while in prison — I have to guess that early in the process he would have shown habitual responses and probably a fair amount of confusion.

  19. I noticed toward the beginning, when the interviewer repeated a statement he’d made as if he believed it, he flashed happiness. He also flashed happiness when the interviewer was asking what he got out of it, and he mentioned an adrenaline rush. The rest of the time, there was a lot of shaking his head while saying that what he did was wrong. I think he’s sorry he messed up his career, and does not think what he did to the dogs was wrong.

  20. No, I’m not convinced. What he did was so egregiously cruel that it leaves me cold. I hope for his sake and that of his family, that he genuinely has a change of heart and habit. I think that being a spokesperson against animal cruelty is admirable, but will only work if he is sincere. I think he should be suspended permanently from the NFL.

  21. To me I do believe he is not sinscere, when he said that he was disgusted with the fact of dog fighting there was no disgust on his face. He bit his lips and licked them several times during his interview, he also when he said he cried the person reiterated that fact and he had a smile on his face for a split second 1:37.

  22. kind of new to all this but at 3.25ish i think he shows shame, at 6.10 he shows a very quick head shake and at 8.10 he squeezes his hands together as for the lip licking all the time maybe he was just nervous about something else rather than weather people are going to believe if hes lying or not, but i have no idea about why he keeps smiling. Anyway just some thoughts could be wrong

  23. He said he was disgusted with what he had done. Disgust is shown on the face with a raised upper lip, wrinkling of the sides and bridge of the nose, the cheeks raise, and the eyes close slightly with slight wrinkling under the eyes.
I saw none of this. All I saw was slight contempt throughout the entire interview, and someone trying to convince us he was being straight with us.
He was lying to America, and the truth was written all over his face.

  24. I agree with other commenters in this thread…he show’s absolutely no remorse other than what it did to his carrer. He show’s contempt and anger at some points in the interview. When I read about this in the newspaper I felt like he regretted what he did, but, watching the video completely changed my mind.

  25. I think he is being sincere, but i might be wrong.

  26. he blinked alot, licked his lips, shifted his weight that shows nervousness, and lying
he didn’t show any sincere regret he just looked strait forward didn’t look down at all i dont have any sound so i don’t no what he’s saying this to but w/ or w/out the sound i can tell he’s lying

  27. sorry to double post but i also forgot to add that alot of times he shook his head no while speaking

  28. He’s lying, all the way through. Nobody is that happy to go to prison.

  29. I noticed when he says “I think it was completely wrong” his right shoulder shrugs slightly. When he says “I feel complete disgust” both of his shoulders shrug. He doesn’t believe his own words. When they ask him why he was doing he seems to get very excited. I think Vick paid the man from the humane society and the old coach to help his image. I think we all agree he’s sorry he lost his 130 million dollar contract, and probably sorry for getting caught, but for hurting the animals, not so much.

  30. I agree with Josh (since he was the one with the most extensive and explanatory comment).

I didn’t need to watch more than 2 minutes of video to know he was lying. His anxiety is evident, he has micro-expressions of happiness and contempt. No shame, always looking away, making up stuff. Shaking his head while he’s saying yes. His eye twitches, I mean his face is screaming out that he’s lying. Reading Kany West at the VMA’s was more challenging than this.

  31. -He was looking down and away for almost the entire interview
    -Constant lip licking
-NO EMOTION…except when he was talking about crying in prison. his voice seemed to tremble a little. Not so tough for a football player, I guess. His cell mate must have been a dog lover.

  32. -Serious talk with almost no expresions at all
-Sometimes it seemed like he was forcing himself to tell the words he was saying
I wouldn´t trust him very much, it just looks like he is loving animals for money and publicity and not for what they are…
I just believed him when he said he was concerned about his own carreer

  33. i saw some happiness but mainly contempt and constat lip licking

  34. I’m sorry, but Vick is lying!!! the first 20 seconds he lied about 3 times!!!

I actually started liking Tony Dungy………….. If I was tony i would back away from Vick…Hes gonna get a bad rap on himself

  35. I think the only thing he is sorry about is that he got caught. He look smug and there was no shame at all in his face

  36. i dont think hes completely sorry

  37. Chin is up, little smile constantly on his lips, he does not seem capable of feeling what he did, only telling what he thinks is the rigt things to say. Once an offender…

  38. he started the interview lying…look his toungue…he`s nervous or ancious

  39. “You cried a number of nights?”

“Yeah.” (Michael Vick shows contempt, and then a second later shakes his head no).

    Absolutely not.

  40. not to mention distancing language…absolutely no disgust on his face when he says he felt disgusted for what he did…

  41. Did anyone notice the nervous reaction Vick gave when they were interviewing the attorney guy? Other than that, I thought I saw a smile when he said he was disgusted with what he had done. I think he’s lying.

  42. animal & sports lover

He is only sorry he got caught, lost his money, freedom, and temporarily his career.
You can see he is only saying what he’s been told to say to secure his return to the NFL. I feel sorry for Eagles fans, as the decision to have Vick on their team – they had nothing to do with..
He should be back in prison beds crying himself to sleep (ya right :)

  43. During the apology he shows content.

  44. Question
He show a lot of contempt (to the left of his face, so for the right of us). Is this by the way, always the same side at a person? Either the right or the left? Because the contempt he shows is every time on the same side.

    My judgement
I am not a liar expert, but I think a lot of people can see that he’s not sincerely, because:
    - contempt
    - micro expression of hapiness
    - shakes no when he says yes
    - shoulder shruks
    - no expression of disgust, when says he feels disgust
    - shows a lot of hapiness

I hope someone can answer my question. Thanks in advance.

  45. In My Opinion There Are Two Videos Which I Have Watched Fully and In The First Video I Feel As If Vick Was Showing Lots Of Signs Of Regret, Happiness, And Contempt But Throughout The Second Video I Feel As If He Changed…I Dont Know If There Was A Break Inbetween Videos And He Rehearsed Or After Being Out Of Jail He Was Overly Excited In The First Video And The Second He Actually Felt More Comfortable…I Honestly Think That Vick Is Feeling Shame…I Feel Maybe He Is Feeling Shame For Letting Down His Family And Fans…I Have A Feeling This Isnt His First Time In Jail But I Think He Wouldnt Be Caught Back In It Again…Although He Smirks Alot His Eyes Tell The Truth……

  46. For the first part of the interview, it looked like he was trying really hard not to smile. he still showed a lot of happiness, though. He is lying. He might be sorry about getting caught but he thought his lies were funny.

  47. He says he is disgusted, while he isn’t showing anything related to this expression (probably, AU 10/AU9 at least, mainly watch for upper lip, near nose zone – nasolabial furrow, root of the nose -wrinkles or infraorbital furrow) nor sadness or regret (AU 15, AU1, gaze down, AU 43 between intesity A/B). About the crying part, he said that he was crying about all those things, again, no specific AU’s that are involved in sadness, like AU1B or AU 15B, no shame, no guilt-like AU 43(upper eyelids drop) with small intensity. The lip licking is a a way to conceal some expressions which occurs for a short period (microexpresion), as far as I have seen, it might be anger/nervousness (lips are pressed together for a short period and then he changes the dynamic with his tongue, interrupting the previous action). An more in-depth analyze is required to match verbal content with emotional response, manipulators, leakage etc; this might be achieved by watching the video in slow motion and scoring Action Units in key situations.

  48. The man is happy because he has his future granted ($$$), a man that had dog fights in his backyard and is now the ambassador of anti-animal hurt, come on, his career was over because of the scandal, now he just pretends and let the money enter his bank account, thats why he don’t care about the $130million dollar career. lier
